FROM HERE - 40 Years of NEW MODEL ARMY celebrates a band that has not only remained true to itself, but is still able to inspire and carry away 40 years after its founding - without succumbing to commercial concessions or losing its own attitude. Justin Sullivan and his band New Model Army are not only a bit old-fashioned and therefore very likeable, but the band is simply cult.

The man is a poet - we have very few people like him in the Music Industry these days
listen to them when i was 17 , now i am 53 and still like this great band.have seen them several times live , and they getting better and better
The greatest band in the world. I discovered them by chance when I was 18 years old hanging out in a vinyl shop in Innsbruck. Later on I lived in Bradford for studying I met Justin Joolz and I can say these people are true humble and great artists and human beings.
Favourite album?
One if the most under rated bands of all time!
Not by me!!! I love this Band since I was 13 years of age and I am 47... Keeps always occuping a special place in my heart.
Once a fan, always a fan!@@rmamon2554
i listened them first time by a friend in his car over 30 years ago and it hit me like a bulldozer and i am a big fan since then... they are one of that less bands never gets boring to listen to....
The New Model Army will always have that special place in my heart..and is not underrated at all.
Luv & Respect from Sofia
P.S. ".. the ugliest rock band of all time.." - remember🤣😜

same here mate..same here! Aahh..the Stuart Morrow's base hit me like a loving train.
NMA is just 40 years of my own life... One day I received an e-mail from Justin, he saw one of my bass cover of No Man's Land on Dailymotion in this time. What a nice surprise it was for me.
It's called, "perspective" and it's the most valuable treasure we can find as human beings.
I arrived at University in 1989 and met a lass with purple clogs who introduced me to this fantastic band. Thanks Emma, if you happen to read this.
Love this documentary. What a guy, what a band. One of the more rebellious bands from UK.
They have paved the way for modern subversive British acts like
Idles, Slaves, Sleaford Mods, Kate Tempest, Allflaws
As a misanthropic old git, i've been coping with the isolation of 2020 comparatively well, but now I'm getting very itchy feet indeed. I WANNA GO SEE ARMY!!! Thanks so much for posting this.
One of the only bands from this era where the crowd is as excited about the new songs as the classics. Saw them last in Manchester at castlefield with the levellers and people wanted to hear the stuff from winter (me included) as much as stuff from thunder. Great album.
Without a NMA tune played any early nineties alternative clubbing during my studies would not have been complete. Saw them live 94 at the Docks in Hamburg by chance and it was pure energy. Such an earned honoring for this band by this great documentary.Really enjoyed this.
The Docks show was in 1995 and I was there too 😁👊
RIP Rob Heaton. He was such a great drummer.
Not a word about him in this doc, weird.
@@jazcoleman I completely agree as without him Thunder and Consolation would not have happened. Great drummer but so much more as he wrote and arranged songs too.
@@jazcoleman i also was kind of wondering about why no mention of Rob, Nelson or Ed.
@@Rockinsoul_ yeah, maybe they had low budget, wanted a short Version based on the actual band... NMA needs a 4h doc
He is one of the reasons I play drums. Even have that tribal feel he had. Such an inspiration
So much of who I am and how I see the world and life has been defined by this band's songs and attitude! I've only spoken to Justin once for a few minutes after a gig he did with Dean in Berlin in 2012, but I feel as if he was another senior brother to me. I love you, guys, and I hope you'll go on forever!
forever and ever and ever and ever..........................
I am crying tears of joy, this documentary makes me so very happy! I love New Model Army! I have never had the privilege of seeing them perform live, but I have enjoyed every part of their creativity! Thank you for sharing this!
I feel so humbled watching this. I first saw NMA back in the early 80’s as an angry 20 year old. I’ve mellowed over the years and am now ready to rediscover this wonderful band.
Thank you all (WDR Rockpalast Producing Team). for this great documentation of NMA
Thank you NMA Justin Joolz for 4 decades and congratulations for your 4th anniversary!!!
I was only really on board as a fan for the Thunder And Consolation/Impurity years but still.....this documentary is very welcome indeed! Great quality and I like the mature, settled way everyone speaks. Especially Justin of course. Common sense and peace prevails right here in the New Model Army world.
I’d argue his lone solo album is among the best ever recorded.. navigating by the stars is a stone cold masterpiece
seriously one of the greatest bands ever. i've been a fan since i was 5 years old. (i turn 40 this year) i am so fortunate to have seen NMA 8 times and met them offstage twice. genuinely great people. i can't wait until live shows can happen again.
Thank you Rockpalast for the recognition of this consistently brilliant band. There is no one else who has kept producing such quality material.
I am so thankful that someone gave me a NMA tape in 1988 recorded off the radio and I've been hooked ever since. Cheers to 40 amazing years and I'm hopeful for many more to come.
Thanks to my sister and her friends who in 84 brought NMA to my ears. From seeing them, missing them, seeing them and even working with them they are a band I can and do listen to, be that a random track that pops up on a shuffle or a whole album. Brilliant to see this documentary. Thanks NMA in all you incarnations for the music.
Peter Johnson in what capacity did you work with them mate?
@@patkelly3966 I was the house sound engineer so got to work with all their guys and the bands.
@@peterjohnson2245 Cool
I had the pleasure of having done the first part of the concert that they did in Portugal city of Porto, we were in the backstage we opened some bottles of wine and we had an interesting conversation with the band who are very good people, cheers to them big hug
As a 17 year old, Thunder And Consolation was a hugely important album to me and still is today, i remember seeing NMA at Brixton Academy in 1990 and they were incredible and remember my Thunder cover T-Shirt being ripped during mosh of Vagabonds!. Thanks Justine. don't ever stop.
In 58 years old and I've never really listened to NME, but how I missed them on my radar I will never know.
absolutely amazing and listening to them every day
Followed them around the country in the late 80s they make such good music I still return
Every now and then when I need a fire once again in my soul
Vielen Dank, daß der WDR einen Film auf englisch produziert und die Leute reden läßt, ohne daß jemand unbedingt drüberquatschen muß.
I've first heard albums of NMA about '88, good to see they're still striving!
i listened them first time by a friend in his car over 30 years ago and it hit me like a bulldozer and i am a big fan since then... they are one of that less bands never gets boring listen to....
Totally good to see this documentary of such an.amazing band and the story behind the band, really hoping to see them this March and capture some amazing photographic photos.
So good to see and hear bands that don't sell out to big corporate companies and keep the candle burning brighter for longer. Ghost of Cain was the first album of NMA that I listened to and loved.
I have thoroughly enjoyed this NMA offering on my wonky iPhone! Perhaps this is one GOOD thing that has come from this wretched pandemic. Thanks for the upload.
Thank you so much!! My favorite band ever
Superb, best urban folk band to ever draw breath! Great lyrics, great melodies, great musos. Love the bass lines..
Great band! One of the best of all times (in my humble opinion, of course!)...
Justin Sullivan, excellent!
From a big fan from Sao Paulo/Brazil.
Thank you for this. My intro to NMA was that appearance on The Tube and my highlight of this horrible year was the 40th Anniversary online Gathering.
HERE COMES THE WAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The first time i heard that song the hairs on my arm stood up and my heart started to beat that little bit faster, then its a choice of dance, play guitar or smash some inanimate object to pieces. Still a great song, awesome band.
1st seen nma in Leeds in 89..they were playing a free gig outside the city hall..I'd never heard of em..from that day I loved em..and have followed em all over....long live the army...
I was there too, been a huge fan ever since. Soundtrack to my life.
Yes.
They came on with where singing in the rain. Great gig
Thoroughly enjoyed watching this. Thanks to all involved for making it! Loved NMA for close to 30 years!
Oh yes, what a Band. I’ve been listening to them since 1988. I saw them a few times, always good music. One of the last times they played for free in Hannover at the Maschseefest. I was told they played there cos they were already around (they had a day off) and liked to play. Great gig.
Thanks for all the great times you've provided over the years NMA!
Excellent. Great behind the scenes stuff before the Global Gathering. Plus lots of reminders of growing up on the ‘80’s in the north of England!
From 51st state onwards NMA were the soundtrack to my secondary school 86 onwards...what a band, what a legacy, what a documentary.
Such a wonderful band. I first heard them a few years ago when White Coats came in my UA-cam. Seen them live twice since, they’re so so brilliant and still so important.
ive seen NMA 3 times, in a crowd of 77,000 at bizarre festival 91, in a crowd of about 300 in Phoenix on the tour for Love of Hopeless causes tour, and at a pub in Arizona with a small pub crowd, it is always a religious experience. best band in the world. then and now. I also got to meet the band after the 93 show and talk to Rob Heaton for an hour.
Winter gives me goosebumps every time
Thanks for uploading this great documentary on NMA - a great band who, for those of us growing up in Bradford in the early to mid 80s, were really important and inspiring. Seeing those streets, from that time, is a punch in the memory. I saw the band live a few times, had a No Rest poster, torn from outside Caesars nightclub on Manningham Lane, up on my wall all through College and Uni, and the Vengeance album is still one of my favourites. To all the NMA fans and warriors; go well, take care and much love. Dx
Really enjoyed this - thanks. Only saw NMA once; Glastonbury 1985 (muddy hell). Justin came to the theatre tent after and gave out anti-heroin badges.
Did a few gigs opening for N.M.A. in 2004. Amazing People,..Sweet Souls.X
💛✨💛✨💛✨ Thank you NMA and all the 'family' creating spirit. As a writer of a wee newspaper column in Bradford when the band were 'formed ' and seeds were planted I simply knew the flows and glows then. And travelling down to London with Robb after the Bradford City Fire to help create the single You'll Never Walk Alone was one of thee profound moments for me as an old Hippie. He was the heart beat essence with Justin, Stuart and Joolz and what a wonderful spirit flowed through him and you all. It is still flowing on. Bradford did not seem to get ya!!! Despite my writings and trying to reach wider. The flow is forever - skills, gifts, crafts come and go and all is evolving - always. Shine NMA shine. I love you so much and I love you so much more in every breath. Thanks for the resonance - yhe wirfs - the BEING 💛✨💛✨💛✨💛✨💛👍
Bloody love this, so many insights into a band I've loved for so many years, their music has had such a profound impact on my life, it was joy to watch. No rest for the wicked eh!
New Model Army is just the definition of integrity.
Respect forever for Justin Sullivan the last real poet
Had the unbelievable luck to have an alternative non commercial record store in Nuremberg, Germany, the SUB. Michael Demmler, the Shop lifter, forced me 1985 to listen to a record of a new english band. They are the next step of punk rock, so you will like it, he said. I for ever be thankful that he opened the door of the NMA universe for me!
Absolutely brilliant, my love for New Model Army knows no bounds ! Thanks for this 🎸🎶💙😎
Thanks for this documentary. For one hour I forgot about all the shit going on. Why is it that I watch something on Netflix and within 15 minutes I´m bored and and with this rockumentary I was glued?
51st state never rang so true..... probably the most electric gig i went to in the 80s.... he gave it 110% on stage....
how can it be 40 years of new model army without a word about genius musician Rob Heaton !
Saw them many a time in the 80's.... Fucking superb live band
Justin and the band ,
Legends.
National treasure.
I remember them in 1986,l saw them at the town and country club, Kentish town,l lived two minutes up the road 46 highgate road, good time ,that place was used as a lrish social club alot of the time.always blood on the steets just outside ❤
This was brilliant, thankyou Oliver Schwabe!!
Excellent Documentary!!! Please have Rockpalast do your next documentary.
Honestly found this Documentary more insightful than NMA's own "Between Dog & Wolf."
Agreed, though I did love "Between Dog & Wolf" too
Between Dog & Wolf was nothing to do with NMA. It was in no way affiliated to the band. They simply allowed their music, footage and interviews to be used.
Absolutely brilliant, such a well crafted tribute to an amazing band, people and sentiments, thanks.
Exile in India
Awesome history lesson thanks for that. Here’s to returning to rock city next year and dancing again, onwards and upwards.
Band number one!!!!!🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷
Excellent work for a SUPER BAND!!!!!! Love it!!!!
Loved this as I did the live streamed gig. But as a documentary I wish there was less Joolz and more Stuart Morrow and Rob Heaton history
Saw them in 1988, or 1989, in Detroit. Great band.
New Model Army has always been a shelter for me, I feel so lucky to have it! Thanks wdr and the film crew great job! and yess finally I had a chance to see the place where I have heard a lot great things about it...
40 sweet years and no nearer home...
From the earliest days of NMA when the music was like a wild beast, unleashed and chased by Fat Rob, Justin and Stuart to the current Synphonia line up, NMA are the REAL spirit of music. To Justin, Joolz and the assembled troubadours, ❤ and Energy, long may you Rock. Nagbea x
Best memories.. in dozens of European cities.. hanging out..and nma concert later on meeting in the Circle. Hugs
First saw them at the Metropole pub in Bradford in 1981 (I was a student). Have loved them ever since.
This is better than the official NMA doco.
This band never ceases to amaze me
Love this band.
VIVAN LOS New MODEL - -- saludos desde Barcelona-
Saludos desde peru, buen documental de new model army, los redescubri en mi adolescencia alla por los 90s
I grew up with a old skool posse in Essex and they all loved New Model Army in the late 80s and 90s, most were speed heads, love Justin and seen him once or twice and great docco! Only like a few albums though, not sold on this soppy stuff but can still respect a good artist when I see one. :) Rock on!
They're the best I've ever heard. The pillow with Frida Kahlo is awesome
What a band! Thanks! \m/
Marshall Gill.... probably the best guitarist to come out of Oldham!!
Glad i got to see this band down Eden project a few years ago
Brilliant thank you
That's the song that sticks out for me,"vengeance"
Rob heaton wicked drummer made the band come alive
Always liked this band, new model army they never sold out❤
Used to love them, until I got knocked out in a mosh pit in 88 after being targeted by the "Family" at the Milton Keynes Bowl. I'd seen them once before and had no problem with being in the mosh-pit t-shirt less. This time I had a dyed blonde, tall, flat-top and a World Domination T-shirt and maybe I didn't fit in , I don't know. Anyway, thanks again to the 2 NMA mosh -pit guys who dragged me out and stayed with me until i came round 5 minutes later. I then went down to Notting Hill and sold all my NMA vinyl at Music & Vinyl Exchange. Time has allowed me to enjoy the music again. It happened right at the start, i think it was during 51st state.
Truly awesome.
i really love them
great docu! :-D
cheers!
Fantastic and bless you for putting it up.
And not mentioned by name in this at all! 🙀 wtf?! He was amazing and is missed.
@@tommanserable Eh???
Brilliant.
Is there a place on the net where I can rewatch the anniversary stream?
Been looking myself. Alas to no avail yet.
Strange that Germans make a documentary of an English band mostly unknown in the UK. Went to South Wales on holiday last month, the name rings a bell, but don’t know them.
I’ve been a fan since 1988, lost them after The Love… and refound them with Today is a good day.
In 1993 I saw them live at Camping Festival Torhout for 1 minute… . I’ll never forgive myself I missed that gig.
What an excellent work
We need this kind of surprises
Thank you sooooo much
Werde ich mir in den nächsten Tagen anschauen, ich freu mich drauf!
Heya
Great band
20:20 Onwards, a very difficult time 1984 up north and livelihoods. I suppose I was lucky, Maggy Thatcher invested a lot of money in the Polytechnic system, which gave me 5 years of London life, 1986-91. British Leyland, and other manufacturing say no more.
Fckn genius i think.
