Love your P & P and Colin Firth bday stuff
Stoner is one of my all time favourite novels. A quietly heartbreaking but life affirming book. I am glad you enjoyed it and must check out those you rate higher. I am quite a bit older than you so was interesting to see how you reacted to it. Wonderful vlog.
I totally agree. Thank you so much! 😊
Ahhh I’m so happy you picked up Pachinko, it’s a book I still think about regularly even a year after reading it. I’m even happier you enjoyed it 🥰
Ahh it was so good, thank you!
Loved Still Life so much. I also am not a historical fiction fan, especially WWII. This book just warmed my soul. I’ve had Stoner on my shelf for at least years. I trust you, so going to get to it hopefully in March. Great video. So glad you’re feeling better.
Thank you! 💓
So glad you liked Pachinko! I finished it yesterday and I think it’s a new fave 👌👌
I said stoner!!! What a hidden gem - I picked it up at a charity second hand book sale and it gave me so much joy (and grief). I also felt the same about Still Life - something I wouldn’t have picked up if I just read the synopsis but the writing was just sublime. I felt like when I read winman’s novel, that I wanted to be in Florence with this found family and be apart of their lives and their conversations
Well thank you for making me read it it was soooo good
Also, try Butcher's Crossing by John Williams and Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy.
Pachinko was great. It was a bit slow but a very interesting read. I learned so much about Korean and Japanese relations.
Me too, it was so interesting!
I own Stoner because I read Butcher's Crossing by John Williams in University and LOVED it! Highly recommend if you're into more of an adventure story that's also a little bleak.
Ooh wil have to check this out, thank you!
Tin Man by Sarah Winman is one of my favorite books of all time. I haven’t read Still Life yet, but I have a feeling you would love Tin Man.
I haven’t read it, I really need to!
Read Pachinco when it came out.
LOVED IT!!!
Omg I’ve had Stoner on my tbr for so long, this has convinced me!! Glad to see you’re feeling better!! xx
Thank you!! Hope you love it 😊
I loved Pachinko when I read it two years back. I’m currently reading Still Life and I’m loving it. I love Sarah Winman books.
So glad you’re enjoying it! Can’t wait to read more from Sarah Winman
I am here for the dog footage & Lenny was wearing a COAT!! Pachinko is one of my favourite books - didn't expect to love it as much as I did. Haven't read her other novel yet - why not? 🤔
Hahah I know Lenny’s coat is too much. Pachinko is so good 💓
i feel like you'd love great circle. it's historical fiction but it's primarily character/plot focused and there are so many interesting themes/ideas that come out of it!
I really think I’d like it too it’s just so long 😅
@@GKReads ahhh it is a commitment 😓 but it reads so quickly
The best nonfiction books I read in 2021 were
Hidden Valley Road
Empire of Pain
A Ghost in the Throat
Glad u were safe during the storms, when I saw them on NZ news I was thinking of u. Hope you are having a better health week. Blessings from Colleen.
Thank you Colleen. Hope you’re well! X
Stilling making my way through this video (love it). But had to chime in to say I also got that candle and I’m obsessed. Also, the rise and shine song had me dying. Brought back memories I didn’t know I had 🤣
Hahah the religious childhood just keeps on giving when you thought you’d escaped 🤣 thank you!
Pachinko has now been made into a movie
Oh amazing that sounds great
Really glad you enjoyed Pachinko! It was one of my faves last year. Completely agree that it’s a v fluid read considering the time span it covers. Similarly to you I don’t normally enjoy historical fiction but found Pachinko very digestible and actually enjoyed learning more about that time in history. If you’re looking for something similar I would recommend wild swans: three daughters of China. I learnt so much about Chinese history by reading this book but it still felt like a good fiction novel. Only warning is that it’s a big’un! :)
I’ve heard amazing things about Jung Chang!
I know exactly what point you gasped in Pachinko and frightened the pup! I listened to it whilst driving to work and had to pause and collect myself 😩
I couldn’t believe it!! 😭
Great pupper content!!! Also, I loved Pachinko too. ❤️
So many cute dogs! 😍
Also The death of Vivek Oji was super enjoyable. It wasn’t my best read either but I also read it in 2020. I don’t like freshwater as much though, too abstract for me 😬
I LOVED pachinko, I read it in 2018 or so and its moving adaption is coming out in March! It’s a brilliant novel, I should reread it at this point 🤔
I can’t wait to watch the film!
heard only good things about pachinko. really excited to pick it up!
Hope you love it!!
Hi Grace! New subs here! I followed your channel because I saw you read translated books, a lot 👏🏾 which is cool!
Thank you so much!
such a great vid idea!! i need to check out stoner
Thank you!!
lol at the uncuh gehms hahaha - i feel like you would like hunter harris's substack newsletter (maybe you already know it) she wrote something funny about it in last week's one
Ooh thank you I don’t know about it but will have a look!
Ah this is great timing because I just finished Still Life last night! It didn't quite work for me overall, I found it all a bit twee and hard to connect with. (Also way too much time spent at the pub and not enough with Ms Skinner!) I say all that but by the end it had worked some magic on me and the cast of characters will stick with me. Ps. I listened to it as an audiobook and Sarah Winman's narration was amazing! ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Yeah it was a bit twee but think it found me at just the right time where I wanted the tlc! So cool that she narrates it herself
My top book of 2021 was Great Circle.
Need to get round to this at some point
cool show, gk, why did you go to chicago, have you been to other places, plus how much was it all.
Still Life- I don’t like reading about WWII either but I thought that aspect of this was good. I did finish this but it was a huge slog. I thought it would be a 5 star read based on reviews, and I was just on holiday in London and Florence. I mostly found this boring
Are you taking part in the #irishreadathon /#marchmysterymadness/ #marchofthemammoths ?
Disappointed there wasn't an extra minute and 3 seconds to cut out of the video
Next time
Leak your nail polish color 😳
I’m not sure they’re gels! But thank you 😊
