Falling back down to earth is never easy emotionally. It was a huge learning curve for Federer.

All that is amazing. In 2009 Federer was already a living legend. We are in 2020 and he still is in the top 3. I'm so happy to have the luck to witness such greatness.

Wow Roger really overcame adversity to win the FO, even without Rafa in the way. I totally forgot about this match and how close Haas was to taking him out. The semi final against Del Potro is the one I remember most. Del Potro was blasting him off the court for the first 3 sets. Roger so easily could have lost his big chance.

Roger Federer has done it all, he has won every single Grand Slam, he's been world number 1 more times than I've had cheeseburgers from McDonalds, he's considered one of the Greatest that's ever played the game.....All except for 1 thing......there is one thing that he has not achieved in his career.......Defeat Rafael Nadal at the French Open, I would love to see it, it would be monumental, Rafael Nadal is his Kryptonite, but he needs to have another crack at it.
he had last year, got his second worst ever defeat in a grand slam match (the worst being his FO final loss to Nadal in 2008).
I can say this with absolute confidence: Federer will never win a FO match against Nadal, moreover he will never win a clay court match against Nadal again he hasn't done so in more than a decade, furthermore there is a good chance that Federer would probably never play on the FO again, he already skipped this clay court season and he is 38 years old, how long will you think he'll be playing tennis? at most he has 2 or 3 cracks at a clay court season or a FO, he needs to focus on playing on Wimbledon mostly that's the only slam left where he still has an actual chance of winning against Nadal and Djokovic or the ever increasingly dangerous next gen players.

I mean with Roger currently ranked #4 I don't see him retiring yet. Why the hell would he want to retire at ranked #4 that's stupid as hell he's not going to do that. With how good Novak is playing right now, it's going to be very tough for Roger at Wimbledon that's for sure.
@@ralki15 I don't see why Federer being ranked #4 would necessarily stop him from retiring. Pete Sampras retired immediately after winning the US Open in 2002, and he'd only just turned 31. Federer is almost 39 and coming off knee surgery. He's been defying the clock for 6-7 years but it has to catch up with him at some point. Retiring when he's still a top player would be a great time to bow out.

I've never understood why fans boo players when they destroy a racket, this means everything to them, its their way of life, and cos they show passion fans think it's worth berating them for it, I get that they paid to watch them so they can do most things they want to, but it just comes across as entitled. *EDIT* : i never knew talking about a tennis racket could get people so heated, the replies to this are so funny lmao
a Thatvis completely true about their life; however, tennis is supposed to be a game of sportsmanship and class, so smashing a racket is extremely poor on the players part and is rightfully shamed.

I think this is a great example of how a talent that's too great can turn against itself at times. If I were to be in his place (which of course i couldn't even imagine, i'm just speculating here), independently of how it seemed from the outside, I would have believed I was underperforming and I would have gotten frustrated why nothing was working out. And eventually things would effectively not work as well , because this perfectionist mindset would start affecting my play. The bar for how I should play would probably get so high, both according to the crowd and myself, that I would be walking a knife's edge between completely imploding or exploding on a mental level. That's how I would feel I think. In all fairness even if Federer wasn't at his best in 2008 or 2009 he was still amazing, and he already had an amazing career behind him as well. What I'm trying to say is that even if your one of the best players in the world it's okay to have a weaker period, it's okay to not be at the top at times, but Federer kept pushing himseld further and further. Luckily for Federer he was able to carve his path to a happy end to becoming one of the greatest of all time instead of a sad one, which wouldn't have been something to sneeze at either (but possibly very unsatisfying for Federer). When you look at it now in a video like this, it really is one of the most astonishing things in tennis and maybe even all of sports.

The calmness this guy has even after 2 sets down is what made him what he is today . 20 grand slam and 8 Wimbledon. For me he'll be the GOAT of tennis even though Djokovic or Nadal might cross 20 grand slam but Roger played another level of tennis. He can pull off any shot in tennis.
Eg:- Pulling off shots with one back hand is no easy thing.

Just complete mental breakdown by Haas. You saw Fed do it recently to Sandgren in the Australian Open, and Federer is able to keep his composure like a true professional in dire situations against some of these pros. It works with guys like Haas and Sandgren because of their inexperience in these situations, but in these situations against Nadal or Djoko, the tables are turned on Fed, mostly because of his age now.
Incorrect- Haas was been a regular top 10 and got to no 2 in the world (including runs to grand slam semifinals) whatever stopped him winning this match wasn’t lack of experience, Federer stopped him winning plain and simple

Let’s not forget the context. Nadal and Djokovic, the two big shots at that moment had been upset by Soderling and Kohlschreiber. When Roger went down 0-2 everyone counted him out as another victim of a major upset.
Apart from Nadal losing to Soderling (which is the biggest upset in tennis history) Djokovic losing to Kolshrieber wasn't as much of chock, it was surely an upset because Djokovic has won the Australian Open just months before but he wasn't that huge of contender at the French.

@@juanantoniozuleta6575 Madrid is Nadal's worst clay court Masters statistically, even Federer managed to beat him there but he was never going to beat him in the French Open, Djokovic was never that big of threat on clay to Nadal before 2011, he was a great HC player of course but just good enough to reach the finals at masters- level tourneys when playing his best tennis and then lose to Nadal, before 2012 he had never even won a set against Nadal on the French Open and was basically destroyed at the 09 Davis cup (a five setter) on Clay by Nadal.
Even in 2010 he lost to Jurgen Melzer in the Quarters, he was never that big of a threat on the French Open, the same as Nadal was on HCs before 2009, just good enough to make the semis and quarters and lose to good players and make finals on the smaller tournaments.
if by a chock you mean a top 4 player losing at the French then yes, Djokovic losing in 2009 French Open was chock but that's about it, he wasn't going to win the French against either Nadal or Federer and his best possible outcome would have been to reach the final.

For opponents, any opponent, the solution is to return less shots towards the back hand side of Federer and Thiem. Any ball hit wowards their back hand area, and either Federer or Thiem will hit a screaming back hand return shot towards a corner of the tennis court.

Coming from a Rafa fanboy, Rodger is without a doubt one of the greatest players of all time. Not related to this, but my main racquet is a pro staff 97 and my backup is a pure aero. No, I am not biased, and yes, those two racquets (and players) are very good.
