Love the 1945 version. This one popped up today… really enjoyed it terrific cast
Loved this Dirk always delivers!
Thank you Vinnie. What a treat. It’s so funny. I feel like it’s Minnie Castevet playing Madame Arcati.
This is very good. Ruth Gordon in a supernatural play, two years before Rosemary’s Baby.
Thank you. What a cast! Magical Rosemary Harris.
Un regalo invaluable. con Dirk Bogarde y un elenco increíble!!
This looks so good. Thanks for posting this movie. Watching it for the first time.....👀
Can't believe what I'm seeing! Never knew this existed. Bonus is 'Elvira' is still alive! Thanks for posting!!
the divine voice of ms harris........
It's a fabulous cast
My sister played the maid, Edith in our high schools performance of this play. She played it comically and stole the show.
8:18 My what an other-worldly hair-do on this conjurer . ☻
This was made 2 years before Ruth Gordon starred in "Rosemary's Baby" .
I love Ruth Gordon.
Do you know the provenance of this recording and what format is was on?
It was videotaped and broadcast in color, so clearly this was captured on kinescope, but I can't tell you much about the recording beyond that. I think I tweaked the image cuz it was really washed out, and I moved all the commercials to the end.
A very good version, even though this time the husband remains alive. Can't match the magic of the movie, but a tv production couldn't. Much better, in my opinion, than the other tv production with Coward himself, Claudette Colbert and Lauren Bacall.
FFS Spoiler Alert!
The background music absolutely kills the humor.
They changed the ending. Badly.
Umm no they didn't, it's the original ending from the play, I should know I've performed in it twice 😉
@@sford557 It must be a sanitised American version. In the British play and film (1945) the male protagonist dies and ends up a ghost with his wives, which is far more fitting.
I like finding these other versions. This has to take third place with me, after the original film and the tv version with Noel Coward & Lauren Bacall. Never was a fan of Ruth Gordon.
In the original play the husband doesn't die, and Dirk Bogarde is a wonderful actor, but there's no explanation as to why Madame Arcati is an American - she's incongruous unfortunately.
I totally agree with you. Ruth Gordon is terribly overrated as an actress in my opinion. She's more of a "personality" and badly miscast here. She isn't funny and brings the whole show down for me. Rosemary Harris is quite good, however.
@@alidabaxter5849 : To quote the play directly, Ruth Gordon as Madame Arcati is "incongruous and embarrassing."
Rex did it best
This was back when Hallmark had culture instead of drek.
