For the wrinkle release spray, bring a dryer sheet or two with you and a small empty spray bottle, then no need to put in your liquids bag. Once at destination, tear a dryer sheet in 1/2 and stuff into bottle, fill with warm water and shake well. Leave sit for 10 minutes so it releases and mixes, then use as usual. Spray bottles can be purchased at the Dollar store or save a bottle from glasses lens cleaner, it’s the perfect size.

Ilana, when I pack for my cruise, I take a brand new, non scratch scrubber sponge, and soak in some bathroom cleaner into it. After it dries, I place it in a ziploc bag. When I get into my cabin, and wipe surfaces with Lysol wipes, I wet the scrubber and go into the shower and scub it throughly, along with the bathroom sink, and the toilet. The room stewards do as good of a job as they can, between cruises, but they don't have enough time to do a thorough full cleaning. Just that one pre-prepped scrubber, gets everything sanitized, and takes up no space in your carryon.

I know many people don't care for the chemicals, but on my first (and so far only) cruise, I brought a Mr Clean sponge from Mr. Clean.
When I went on my cruise, and I found out that your family and mine were on the same cruise (Canada/New England) at.the exact same time, but in the opposite direction. We.went from Quebec to New York, and you went from New York to Quebec.
My husband and daughter will not cruise, so now I'm researching cruises for solo cruisers. It looks as though Viking is the best opinion, but I need to make sure it's not a "singles" cruise.
I used so many of your excellent suggestions and recommendations for that first cruise, and I was traveling with my husband's aunt and uncle. They've cruised over 60 times and on every major cruise line. They were still operating under Love Boat style traveling, so the accessories I brought, and several of the tips you have provided distinctly improved their cruise experience. Thank you so much.

Here's a hack I discovered by accident and it has to do with controlling the water temperature in the shower. I noticed on all four cruises we've been on so far that there's a small button on the shower water temperature control. If you press the button, you can move the water temperature control past the "ordinary" highest setting and get the water a little warmer if you like it. Obviously, you want to be careful and not scald/burn yourself, but if the shower doesn't get quite warm enough for you, this is a potential remedy. Thanks for all the informative videos and keep up the great work!

My husband has extremely sensitive skin and most soap will cause rashes and blisters on his hands. So any time we travel I bring him a spice shaker with a flip-top lid full of grated Dove bar skin cleanser. He just sprinkles a couple of the grated Dove bar pieces onto his wet hands and the Dove dissolves and foams. He’s even able to use this on planes, and it’s been a real hand-saver for him!

Not necessarily a bathroom tip, but you did mention laundry. If you plan on doing some loads in the launderette, bring dehydrated laundry detergent sheets. I used to bring a couple laundry pods but those need to go into a liquids bag. The detergent sheets are liquid free! It is revolutionary for doing a load of laundry on a cruise ship. I like longer cruises-so being able to do a couple loads of laundry is a must.

Just returned from a cruise on Celebrity Beyond and I’d say with two adults and one child we did not need any special hacks for our bathroom. I did ask for extra hangers from our attendant and used them to hang 2-3 wet suits on the back of the deck chair with a towel underneath to catch the water drip. We had an infinite veranda stateroom and that area was great for hanging as it would have been too windy and humid to hang clothes outside. We were extremely pleased with our accommodations on Beyond and felt it was an upgrade from Royal Caribbean’s Symphony of the Seas.

This video was very helpful. Thank you. Additional items to consider based on my experience:
    1. If tou will enjoy a day in a beach- a floating of your preference & a pop up beach tent to avoid renting one.
    2. Ankle ice pack wrap specially if you will be on a cruise. We recently travel and not sure if it was one or a combination of the salt in the food, the beach water salt or too much walking that my ankles were extremely swollen.
    3. Compression socks - for the above reason, as both of these helped a lot.
    4. Knee ice wrap
    5. Migrane relief cap
    6. All yr medicines

All 3 fit neatly on the shower caddy in our shower and 2 scrubbies. Worked perfect. Now all the OTHER stuff I brought, well let's just say I have a much better sense of cruising and our personal necessities, lol. We’ve sailed 4 times this past year with NCL, who didn’t have magnify mirrors in their washrooms although, did have them by the main cabin table space, which is an awkward location, as their most needed in the washroom in the brightest light.
As a result, we now travel with one lightweight magnify mirror which has a suction cup on the back, which I place to one side of the large washroom mirror - it’s a serious game-changer we both frequently use (since we’re middle age, with poor vision)!

My husband and I each have our own toiletry bag. Mine is hanging in the closet because it's our "first aid" kit and his is his script meds and joint things we need. Toothpaste & brushes, etc. We don't fly so that's a bonus also for carry on stuff.
Binder clips on the curtain or even $1.25 store "towel" clips. I also use clip magnets; not the hook magnets, since the shower walls are magnetic. I use one on each side, you just need to figure out how to attach them which is no big deal.
Some lines, at least last last year on Carnival, do not provide bathroom glasses anymore. We went and got the small lido cups and used those. Annoying but feasible.
My son and daughter take their own hand antibiotic soap BUT they also use it at home. They have skin sensitivity (my fault, stupid allergies) so it's good the proper "antibacterial" aspect that with my daughter being in forensics need BUT also has a aloe factor or something. They are 25/31 so honestly no idea what they use for a brand..
I have heard the bars for shampoo conditioner is awesome. As long as you are not allergic to some products, like I couldn't do coconut. I can't use normal lotion I need Zinc.
Carnival has a "magnifying" mirror in the bathroom.
I have an older Amazon "cup" for shaving your legs, didn't work for us in the shower we have. Haven't tried it on a ship
    Copycat Downy Wrinkle Release
    You will need:
2 cups distilled or bottled water
    2 tablespoons liquid fabric softener
16-oz. spray bottle (for air travel just pour it into a a proper size spray bottle from the 16 oz bottle)
Most ships have passenger ironing rooms. You can do that on your own if you want, check the ship map and see if they have it.

I always make a trip to the $ store before any cruise. Yes, I absolutely bring my own hand soap. I also pick up everything I need for a mini medicine cabinet. Pain relief, Pepto bismol, Rolaids, ginger candy (sea sick) itch relief cream, allergy meds, antibacterial ointment, bandaids, ear plugs and the mini detergent and fabric softener. A pack of disposable shower caps are great for putting shoes into when packing to keep the germs off your clothes. Lanyard with plastic ID holder to hold your room cards and tip money or ID. also has a couple laundry facilities on each cabin floor of the few different ships I’ve sailed. you can use Irons as well. Amazon sea bands are a must! Small book light for reading in bed as even the dimmest lights are usually too bright. Portable fan and non surge protector extension cord…
I could go on and on 😂

We brought a bottle of Soft Soap handsoap with us from the dollar store. We bought a brand new one so it was unopened and packed it inside a ziploc bag (in case of leakage) and put it in our checked luggage. At the end of the cruise, I screwed the lid back on by depressing the dispenser, cleaned it up, put it back in the bag, and back in the suitcase. No issues at all! I figured if something did go wrong on the way there, we could just squeeze it out to use, and then toss it when we disembarked as we would only be our 5 quarters. Worked like a charm!

    1. I use an oven mitt for my curling iron / straightener - it is good to hold the heat and you can easily put your items inside it for storage. 2. If you use any "wet-wipes" when using the toilet, you cannot flush them, so you must put them in the bathroom trash - I will also spray poo spray right into the trash bag (this is also for feminine products that need to go in the trash as well). 3. We use both a US and a UK plugs/adaptors for the room - so that we can charge more things or plug in more things at once. 4. In the shower we use a small mesh bag to hold shampoo, conditioner, bodywash, etc. Since there are no shelves in there to place our items and we do not want them setting on the floor.

Hi Ilana, thanks for video - always helpful. Here my tips:
    1. Bring your own body lotion. Hotels often provide it, but most cruise lines do not. You even won't get body lotion on board neither in convenience nor in duty free shop. Sometimes you can get body lotion in ship's spa for purchase, but price is incredibly high.
    2. Bring your own nail polish and polish remover/pads with you, if you would like to refresh nails by yourself. You also won't get nail polish and remover neither in convenience nor in dutyfree shop. Maybe reason is, that cruise lines want you to visit spa for manicure/pedicure. Sometimes you get nail polish at spa for purchase, but price is also incredibly high.
    Hope, information is useful.

  • @DieselThunderAviation
    @DieselThunderAviation 3 місяці тому +14

On the subject of the toilets, I can elaborate on that. A toilet in a home relies on gravity and a 3 or 4 inch drain line to carry away the waste when you flush. On a ship, we cannot rely on gravity to do the same as the movement of the ship comes into play, especially pitching and rolling and is a lot more important on smaller ships. This is one of the main reasons ships use the vacuum toilets. They also use less water per flush, and generally use smaller pipes, and is why they are easier to clog when the wrong stuff is flushed. Paper towels, "nice" toilet paper, cleaning products and even feminine products can cause problems. Not only can the pipes get clogged, but this can also cause problems for the pumps, and is not a fun job to repair. I spent 6 years at sea in the military and had nothing near as fancy as what's on a cruise ship!

I am so happy you bought the bar shampoo and conditioner, Ilana. You can just cut off a chunk to take with you, as those bars will last about three months. I hope you like them and look forward to your review.

Yes! I love using liquid hand soap on a cruise. I bought it at a little grocery store near our hotel in Seattle before we boarded the Ovation of the Seas last week (Alaska!).

I do always bring a pump soap with me. I purchased a bottle from Target that has a pump but also has a lock to prevent it from getting all over the place during flight/drive etc. I use Ivory dish soap and use it as hand soap AND dish soap to wash my reusable beach cups/water bottles. Ivory is gentle on the hands but works to keep the cups clean. Much more convenient than the bar soap or body wash that is provided.

I put my makeup brushes in one of the glasses. That way I can find the one I’m looking for.

I use one for toothbrush with cover and paste and another glass for tubes of liquid makeup like foundation, blush, concealer and lip gloss. Thinking of bringing my own 2 plastic cups vs asking for xtra tumblers
