Measure directly when a new replacement bearing needs to be fitted to a machine.
Present day journal bearings are machined with built-in total bearing clearance during the machining process to fit a specific piece of rotating equipment.
With two bearing halves joined together to form a complete bearing, the inside diameter (I.D.) of the bearing is measured with an inside micrometer. This size is recorded.
The shaft journal outside diameter (O.D.) is then measured with an outside micrometer and recorded.
By subtracting the shaft size from the bearing size (I.D. - O.D.), the bearing total clearance is known.
