    Very nice demo. I was drawn in because you counted 1,2,3 - 4,5,6 which is the way I have been shown in the past. It is the mark of a truly professional instructor. I'm still not totally comfortable with the switch to right foot forward moves, but I do understand the logic and the need to incorporate in a traveling dance like the waltz. Thank you very much for posting!

    The box step is one of my favorite steps if done with sway, rise & fall, full body contact, etc. I challenge anyone who has been dancing for years of just doing the normal figures around the room to try this step in the center of the room and see if you discover what I've discovered about the power and beauty in this under rated step. Of course he doesn't illustrate this but I'm trying to add value to this video for those of you who've criticized this step or called it no step at all.

      To Desiree, thanks for your inquiry. My comment simply put is take all the technique that you have learned in the advanced figures and apply them to this basic box step and just spend time enjoying it with a focus on styling.

    Interesting. Most Country/Western dancers dance a waltz that consist of just forward steps, something similar to what is called Running Steps in American waltz, but the American and International styles of waltz start with steps that are foward, side, together, back, side togther for the man and back, side, together, forward, side, together for the lady. Perhaps you have a different name for a box. Thanks for your comment.
    Cheers

    Try a search of waltz box step on youtube. Only 300+ videos teaching it. Agreed that there is no step on the ISTD step list called a box, but ask any professional anywhere what a waltz box is and how it is danced.

    When you are leading - particularly with a new partner or a nervous partner - simply tell her to "Back up" (as YOU hold her firmly with your right armat her waist) ... Your left hand is held confidently but is NOT the lead nor the touch you want her to think about - yes, hold her right hand (but lightly) - but keep your RIGHT hand as the "lead" arm behind her. If (when!) she is always "backing up" into your arm you can lead firmly going forwards or backwards. Or turning or swirling .

    Poor? I just returned from a 3 month vacation in Vienna, Austria. "Poor" would only apply to my checking account, which is a little spent out at the moment. But, after all, I DID spend 3 months waltzing in Vienna, and that gets a little pricey. And my waltzing was very popular with the ladies...

    whoever thought up these names sure wanted to confuse students. It's left turning and right turning and progressive patterns. No need to thin k what does 'Natural" mean or what does "reverse " mean or what does 'change step' mean..

    • @Arddy
      @Arddy 6 років тому

      Whoever thought of it is a genius actually, left and rights being named natural/reverse, accordingly to the direction of the dance usually. It'd be even more confusing with left/right turns being used as names - as 'right' turns actually moves you left on the dance floor, and visa versa.

    • @JonathonNeville
      @JonathonNeville 5 років тому

      @@Arddy Reverse turns don't reverse the direction of the dance (counter-clockwise around the ballroom), so why is it called Reverse? Why is it more natural for a couple to turn clockwise than counterclockwise while progressing down the line of dance?

    Yes, this is painful to watch for any real dancer. No rise and fall..no sway ..no cbm. But for a very early beginners lesson...this is all u want. Sometimes less is more:)
    And its of course not a box step..its just 4 reverse and 4 natural turns thats all. At the end it turns in to a perfectly normal basic step. 1-6 of natural, change step, 1-6 reverse, change step. Its a beginners lesson...give the guy a break:)

      It can be a challenge. When you only rotate in one direction, it limits the way you dance the dance. Just remember that the foot always stays the same, only direction varies. Practice is all it takes.
