So, there are some scripting issues with this vid, I'm well aware. These days I don't fully script out my content, I use a series of notes for my topics and just edit out repetitive words like "like", "you know" and "right?" But somehow I said "in this game" and "the game" over two dozen times. So feel free to make a drinking game out of it.
Got a few more game recommendations: Paranoia, Paranoia 2, & Underhell. The 1st two were free mods for Half Life 1, with Paranoia 2 being a very heavy modified standalone mod. And Underhell is a free mod for Half Life 2. Wouldn't mind seeing ya review base Half Life and its two expansions too.
I actually enjoy it when you say "like, you know, and right?" cuz it makes you sound like a real person n shit. It's just your style and like, being yourself is cool, lol.

This was one of the most revolutionary FPS games when it came out, but it was also very demanding so only people with really good computers could play it, and that was at the time when computers were relatively more expensive nowadays and were not being replaced often. I was in high school back then and my pc couldn't support it, by the time I got a new one I was busy with college and actually had a social life so I only played it in 2024 because I was bored so I was like "hey, I might as well see what the big deal was about that Far Cry thing 20 years ago" and damn, I can't even imagine how amazing it would've been to play it back then!
@@SyntheticMan Yes, ever played that old lion king game on super Nintendo. It's essentially a rouge like, or whatnot. You had x amount of lives and then had to start completely over. The game was so hard, a mix of platforming and perfectly timed attacks.
So first, I am pretty sure the bullets in FC are hitscan. The projectiles are just for show. Secondly, FC stealth is combat stealth. Shoot, when enemies start converging on your position (they're smart enough to flank with some of the units, usually), reposition, flank them yourself and repeat. Thirdly, for rocket launcher enemies - just keep your distance and keep moving (except for mutants, waste of ammo fighting them from afar). It's funny that you got impressed by Leaper (humanoid mutant with AG36) AI, since it seems to be half-implemented. As in, they will jump through a bunch of predefined points, but some of them don't seem to have those points so they will just stand in place like a turret. They won't even move if you shoot them and they don't see you. The final boss can sometimes get in close and personal (which is very bad for you), but his AI isn't good. Fun fact: he dies in one good long burst if you aim for the crotch. I am not joking. Props for recognizing how broken the MP5 is, btw, but M249 doesn't suck, it has the most damage out of all 5.56 guns and is fairly accurate and doesn't climb. You didn't use lean, though. Leaning is what makes crouching competitive to prone, especially in close quarters. You'd have much better times in those corridors if you leaned!
Beat it natural back in the day on realistic. It took a long, long time, but it was worth it. I appreciate that they made the hardest difficulty actually hard, like there was a chance I was not able to beat it no matter how much I played it. Gave me a reason to play. Also, the rate of death makes sense. You are a dude going up against a thousand mercs, a bunch of mutants, and you have a rescue mission on top of that. I really liked the stealth because it forces you to stay at range instead of going for knife kills like a hollywood ninjas.
I've never played the original version, but I have played a demo of the Classic version. I had no idea they were different from each other. Far Cry Instincts actually isn't a port; it's a remake of the original made only for the XBox that also had a sequel called Evolution. It was the first Far Cry game I ever played. And yes it is more linear than the original too though you may not notice because it's not a bunch of tight corridors and hallways.

Hello sir synthetic, I've recently found your channel about three weeks ago and have been binging ALL of your content and i am so glad i was recommended your newest, at the time, video of top worst games of 2020, after that I started watching everything. Your content is very good and a great refreshing unique find that I'm thankful to have found your channel. You've helped me go back to a few games that I forgot about, like RAGE and RESISTANCE 3, literally just bought a ps3 on ebay to play some awesome games again. I hope you do FarCry 2 some day I've never played it either and would love to see if it's something I would like to play. Keep up the great work man, I really enjoy your old game reviews as a fan of old games myself.
I'll be doing Far Cry 2 sooner rather than later, probably late March or early April. The plan is to tackle 2, instincts 1&2 and Blood Dragon before 6 comes out.
I have never played first FC. My favourite is FC2,even if is more showpiece for the engine,it still looks awesome, just a bit too brown like all fps from 360/PS3 era. I think you will like it,no mutants tho,lol

I remember i played this in the 4th grade with one of my friends, we couldn’t beat it so we asked his dad to play it with us. Good times. Nice to see someone talking about the first one
I look back at Far Cry with a degree with fondness. I must've been like 12 years old when I first played it, I was fortunate enough to have a computer at home that could run it. It has a certain charm to it even though the enemy AI is complete BS. I think it must've taken me and my dad like two weeks or longer to beat it, with the final level probably taking half of that time. With Far Cry 2 I spent way, waaay more time in the level editor than I did in the single player campaign. It's also the birthplace of my love of world building (literally) because you could take the map editor surprisingly far. I spent lots of summer days building realistic towns with recognizable streets and landmarks. I'd love to have those old files back. Far Cry 2, yet again, has it's charm but it's far less playable than the first game.
A version without physics the best version of the game? You must be kidding, FarCry allowed one to utilize physics in various ways and it added a lot of action.
Oh wow, didn't know you reviewed this, was looking for recent reviews for FC1 and you were the third result. Great review, Synth. Really liked the extra detail on the weapons and its real life counterparts
the issues with AI actually came with the 1.4 update which straight up broke the ai and allows them to detect you through objects. Downgrading to version 1.3 or getting a mod that fixes it is actually kind of restoring it to how it was supposed to be played
the game Chrome by Techland actually did what Far Cry did but a few months earlier, though it was way clunkier and less fun than Far Cry, it also did some augmentation stuff that was used in Crysis, Chrome actually feels like a janky prototype of Crysis and Far Cry and while it's a mediocre game, it can at least be credited for some good ideas that later games managed to capitalise on more successfully
@@SyntheticMan I feel the need to warn you about the mandatory stealth levels then, since it has a couple on a side note, what's your opinion on Timeshift? since you showed some footage about it at the end of the video
I actually liked Chrome, it's not a lost masterpiece. But I'd definitely rather see Techland make a better version of that game than another open world zombie game.
@@agbrenv Timeshift seems pretty ok, the time slowing and stopping is the only interesting part as far as I've played. Main issue is that weapons are too inaccurate, meaning that time slow+shotgun is the dominant strategy. Granted, I'm only 4 levels in so it might get more complex, idk.
@Synthetic Man, Timeshift is decent, but Raven Soft's Singularity was the better FPS game. Too bad the game had to be cut back from its ambitious original vision. But better that than being cancelled. Activision wanted to scrap the game and just focus on CoD. However, FEAR probably beats both games to be honest.
"Its a fully automatic shotgun, which that pretty much tells you why it was never really produced, but obviously in a video game its awesome." It sounds like this is meant to imply that full auto shotguns aren't a thing but they definitely are. AA-12 being a great example.
Ah, Far Cry 1. Get the aforementioned patch, plus the iron sights mod, and you're good to go. I also liked going into the game files (they were plain texts, IIRC) and changing the machete to give me a 200% speed boost. Very fun game, and I personally rather enjoyed the insane and ridiculous story. I'll never forget a wonderful moment. Circa 2015/16, I was returning home after a prolonged stay abroad. I disembarked from my plane in the late evening, got on the midnight coach, and arrived at my town at about 3 in the morning, the usual routine for these journeys. I was home by 3:40, and since my flat had been uninhabited for a while, I had to turn the boiler on and wait in order to take a shower. Since I had no internet, I thought I'd spend the 20 minutes until the water got hot by perusing the contents of my desktop PC, and I found the modded installation of FC1 sitting there, waiting for me. The last save was on the ship, halfway before the helicopter boss. I spent about an hour playing the game, took a shower and went to bed at 5 in the morning, then woke up at 11 and played FC1 for the rest of the day afterwards. It somehow managed to hit the spot perfectly. Good game.
I remember really enjoying RDR1 and Undead Nightmare but I haven't played them in like 8 years. RDR 2 was way too slow for me, both story and gameplay-wise. I never finished it.
Well Thief 1-3 are still the only games that have done stealth detection properly you know by making it audio based instead of a stupid immersion breaking bar or exclamation point
Oh man, you said that you don't wanna try to beat FC on harder difficulties and it is a great choice. I've already beat Far Cry few times, including 2 times on realistic which was a real pain, especially that one mission that Val was driving and you were supposed to shoot cars filled with enemies, but I still enjoyed it, it's crazy how this game is still fun to play after 19 years.
Great review, I really appreciate the work you put into it. I would love to know, how long it did take you to beat the game? And is it a good length for this type of game or is it to long/short for its own good? I wish you a relaxing week off.
It's anywhere from 8-15 hours depending on the difficulty and your own skill. If you're just looking for a good time, pick normal and turn on AI scaling in the lower right corner. It will lower the difficulty to easy when you die too much. The length is about right, it just feels longer if you get stuck a few times.
I watched your review of farcry2, I thought I'd give it a go, after 35 hours I stopped playing, the road patrols and road blocks were just to bloody annoying. Game mechanics were ok, I also detested the vanilla bullet sponge NPC's, thankfully there's mods for that.
I can't believe someone liked the enemy tag mechanism of Far Cry 3 and the games after it. It's literally a wallhack. I played the far cry games up to far cry 3. After that I got disappointed.
Nice review of the game. Maybe I’ll consider playing it one day in the future but as of now it’s a no. Still haven’t played any games from the series but as I hear blood dragon is the best one/really the only one worth playing. Looking forward to when you talk about it.
As a kid, I thought it was stale, boring game aside a few technical achievements the game had. That is until mutants arrived. They make this game way more fun.
I enjoyed playing this game as a kid, I almost gave up on it when the mutants showed. I just remember that it was super long and it took me like a whole summer to beat it.
Man.. i remember when FC came out I was like 13'ish. Graphics were mind-blowing. My friends parents got the beefiest possible GPU to play this game. I really thought "this is the future" of games. Damn
So you reviewed two versions of Far Cry 1...will you ever do the rest? We have Far Cry (It was later ported to xbox360/PS3 as Far Cry Classic which is mechanically a little different) Far Cry Instincts Predator (An xbox360 repackaging of Far Cry Instincts and it's expansion Evolution) This game is massively different to Far Cry 1. It has the same characters but really only by name and you even get infected with a serum that grants Jack Carver supernatural powers. This game has better stealth in my opinion and also...dinosaurs....well at least the ones that spit from Jurrasic park. Far Cry Paradise Lost (a railgun shooter) Far Cry Vengeance (wii port of Evolution) and finally there is the Uwe Boll film Far Cry...if you don't know who Uwe Boll is you're lucky. Going to be honest man...Far Cry Instincts Predator is a remake in the sense of how Skull Island is a remake of King Kong. You have an island, giant ape, and humans but it's massively different. I highly suggest it because I actually prefer it...and even more so it's expansion. The rail shooter is ...okay and the film is...okay.
“The 5 of you that have played this” buddy you have any idea how popular this game was? Millennials make up the majority of educated gamers and will be the most inclined to watch this video and they played the fuck out of far cry
The best thing is that the Krieger boss fight is absolutely nothing compared to the corridor of death immediately before it. Pretty much just RNG getting through that
Something funny is that while playing this game i preferred the standard assault rifle, and picked up the oicw from time to time and didn't even know how broken the mp5sd was, didn't know proning was broken. I'm playing this game on easy and it's definitely not easy, I'm personally someone who doesn't like retrying things but enjoys different difficulties and i realized that far cry 1's difficulty is just a pain. I recommend for you to not trust the games' difficulties and see what's recommended
I never had a PC or knew how to build one in order to play this game unfortunately and I wanted to. My friends growing up in my neighborhood knew how to build and set up their own PC’s, and they got to play this game and many other great PC games or versions of games. When my friends played this game I was watching them go through the entire game and we all were freaking out at the craziness of the story and were having a blast with the gameplay. Once they beat it though, they felt like they won an Olympic Gold Medal or something lol 😂. This game was an awesome experience to go through and I did like FC 2 and FC 3, and even FC 4 to an extent, but I never got to play FC 5 yet. (Btw, Jack Carver’s getting injured screams are comedy gold, even if he falls from not even that high up and gets hurt from the fall by spraining his ankle, he will scream like he’s being gutted, just from a small fall, and he’ll even scream like that when running out of air underwater LMAO!!!!! 😂 AAAHHHHH!!!)
4:33 lil correction, the game is in fact hitscan, the visual bullet travel is misguiding. Speaking with some members of the modding community, this was apparently a decision they had to make during development because realistically calculating bullet travel in addition to all the other things the engine was doing was way to expensive for the hardware of the time.
Also, apparently the difficulty on the PC release got messed up by a distributor or an update and the common version basically has busted AI that can see through walls and bad water reflections. The original back in 2004 wasn't like that.
I find this game extremely interesting because of it's history, Far Cry 2 and Crysis are essentially two very different sequels to the same game. Not to mention once Ubisoft got the rights there was a number of console rereleases for this game in particular, Far Cry Instincts which got two games, the first of which on Xbox was basically a remake of this game in a shittier engine (with some decent additions and mechanics.) As well as a sequel called Instincts: Evolution which continued Carver's story. Then it got a compilation rerelease in Far Cry Predator: Instincts for the Xbox 360. Then there's Far Cry Vengeance, a remake of Evolution for the Wii... The less I talk about it the better. These versions of Far Cry 1 also apparently got an arcade adaptation. The other one was Far Cry Classic, a remaster of this game on a shittier engine, which unlike Instincts, doesn't really change around the basic skeleton of the game at all, and unlike the pc release and Instincts doesn't have multiplayer, but does reduce the difficulty and make the Trigens not one hit killers.
Stealth can be wonky but the binoculars are actually quite usefull as the color of the tagged npc arrows show their current alert state. Also, i think the desert eagle actually counts as a stealth weapon (or at least it doesnt emit a soundwave on the compass, similair to the mp5sd. Its not very usefull though, as the Mp5sd is just better i think)
the hipfire accuracy is due to the fact you're playing it in 16:9, try changing to a 4:3 or 5:4 resolution and you'll see a great difference, as the game wasn't designed with 16:9/16:10 in mind
i beat on realistic without mode besides the auto scoller with val rhe fucking car chase is impossible after 4 hours i needed god mode for that section edit: farcry classic is bad son the framerate is choppy and the difficulty is gone. you can mark enemies and the autoaims does the rest
instincts series, if you have xbox 360 get the far cry instincts predator whis is esentially both games in 1 package with graphical improvements (it was specifically made for xb360, also it was quite fun to play it). On the side note i still kinda want to get the origional xbox just to play those two games. great video, was interesting to watch!
When this game came out, it was fucking amazing. It came out about the same time as half life 2 and doom 3 and really stole their thunder. The open world size of the levels (especially later on in the game), was breath taking. Definitely in my top 10 games of all time. Very dated now though. Rating by release date, I would say this is the best far cry game of all.
hey thanks for this! i have broken the last cup i care to throw at my wall with the 1st stalker game and i needed a similar game, design-wise to fill the space. i totally forgot about the 1st far cry! its been years, already modding the shit out of it. i liked and subbed 👍
I played this as a kid. One of the greatest natural horror moments being in the tree structures and the grass covered ground felt like a sea of sharks. I would die. I never forgave the sequels. Ever. "We have Vash and he's so cool. We're in america now and got this awesome cult and you have a bear named cheeseburger". Fuck that. There was giant mutated intelligent rocket launcher augmented cyborg beasts roaming the road and blasting rockets at enemy soldiers and hyper intelligent monsters from Quake ambushing you from the forest. Where's YOUR cyber mutant monsters! It's a fucking bear and an AK. If I wanted that I'd play Red Alert 3. Give me back my Wolfenstein monsters!
Played far cry one in 2012 when i was 7 years old on my step dads pc, was insane at the time, played far cry 3 on ps3, primal then 5, new dawn, and 4 last. replaying them all. skipping far cry 1, have a 3080 i9 pc this time tho, far cry 6 with rtx will be my last and hopefully most glorious stop
Hey Synthetic Man, did you ever play Project I.G.I? I always preferred it to Far Cry and it was pretty much my favourite PC FPS, apart from AvP '99.. your thoughts on either title would be interesting to hear 😘
@@SyntheticMan Eidos game.. now available as a free download in a few places. Project I.G.I or "I'm Going In!" as it was known in some regions.. well worth a ganders 👍
Only Cry game I've played is Blood Dragon and I fuckin loved it! This one doesn't look as good. In Blood Dragon, you could mess around and have tons of fun without being killed in a few shots by enemies in a different zip code. It's also a nice short and sweet game, I totally recommend.

A version without physics the best version of the game? You must be kidding, FarCry allowed one to utilize physics in various ways and it added a lot of action.
I still need to try out the Original far cry but never got around to doing it keep up the good work dude
Far Cry peaked with far cry 2 ..3 had Vaas .4 had one of my favourites villain...primal🤣...5 meh...6 meh
@The Shocker you can't say that far cry 2 is one of the most boring games if you've only played 1 mission
@The Shockeronly watching reviews is still not enough to say something like that
@The Shocker even 3 is boring
@The Shockerthe later half was meh as well
facts
I finished this game as a kid when it came out, and yes its VERY hard. Fun though. I liked it.
GOG actually already has the fixed version, didn't have any problem with that one.
Steam version though...
I remember beating the last boss the same way. Great video, really funny stuff:D
the game Chrome by Techland actually did what Far Cry did but a few months earlier, though it was way clunkier and less fun than Far Cry, it also did some augmentation stuff that was used in Crysis, Chrome actually feels like a janky prototype of Crysis and Far Cry and while it's a mediocre game, it can at least be credited for some good ideas that later games managed to capitalise on more successfully
I'll have to take a look at it, that sounds pretty interesting.
@@SyntheticMan I feel the need to warn you about the mandatory stealth levels then, since it has a couple
on a side note, what's your opinion on Timeshift? since you showed some footage about it at the end of the video
"Its a fully automatic shotgun, which that pretty much tells you why it was never really produced, but obviously in a video game its awesome."
It sounds like this is meant to imply that full auto shotguns aren't a thing but they definitely are.
Good game.
I’m really curious what you think about the Red Dead Redemption series. Love your videos and congrats on 10k!
15:43 does anyone recognize the music😭😭why does Synthetic Man torture me by using the awesome background tracks and not providing source😭
Bruh I’ve played far cry 1 for about 10 hours and I am 5 levels away from completing the game. I did not know the G36 had a grenade lacuher 😑
Congrats on 10k you deserve it!
@@SyntheticMan Thank you for the fast reply.
This is a game I have no shame in playing on easy
good work man ! 💪
can't wait for your witcher 1 review
@21:57 Don't forget about FarCry Instincts and Instincts Evolution, also called Farcry Predator for the Xbox 360. :)
I watched your review of farcry2, I thought I'd give it a go, after 35 hours I stopped playing, the road patrols and road blocks were just to bloody annoying. Game mechanics were ok, I also detested the vanilla bullet sponge NPC's, thankfully there's mods for that.
the synched 1812 overture cannon shots and the rockets were top notch
Your vids are really damn comfy, bro.
Great video 👍
We have
Far Cry (It was later ported to xbox360/PS3 as Far Cry Classic which is mechanically a little different)
Far Cry Instincts Predator (An xbox360 repackaging of Far Cry Instincts and it's expansion Evolution) This game is massively different to Far Cry 1. It has the same characters but really only by name and you even get infected with a serum that grants Jack Carver supernatural powers. This game has better stealth in my opinion and also...dinosaurs....well at least the ones that spit from Jurrasic park.
Far Cry Paradise Lost (a railgun shooter)
Far Cry Vengeance (wii port of Evolution)
and finally there is the Uwe Boll film Far Cry...if you don't know who Uwe Boll is you're lucky.
The good old days...
I bought a new PC and FarCry, Doom 3 and Sims 2 at the same day. So much fun memorys 😁
Synthetic man is an absolute LEGEND
“The 5 of you that have played this” buddy you have any idea how popular this game was? Millennials make up the majority of educated gamers and will be the most inclined to watch this video and they played the fuck out of far cry
congrats on 10k!!!!!!!
Thanks. I learned some things about FC.
The best thing is that the Krieger boss fight is absolutely nothing compared to the corridor of death immediately before it. Pretty much just RNG getting through that
i miss the mutants. was so bummed that they starigt up remove and never mention them. all other farcrys after one are only farcry by name!
by far the best and Only Far Cry game
Something funny is that while playing this game i preferred the standard assault rifle, and picked up the oicw from time to time and didn't even know how broken the mp5sd was, didn't know proning was broken. I'm playing this game on easy and it's definitely not easy, I'm personally someone who doesn't like retrying things but enjoys different difficulties and i realized that far cry 1's difficulty is just a pain. I recommend for you to not trust the games' difficulties and see what's recommended
The rocket strikes you showed were f****** hilarious it cracked me up
Dude I just got into this game and I’m glad I’m not alone on the deaths I’ve had on challenging
Shout out to you for the forgotten weapons footage. Happy to know you're a fellow gun Jesus follower
This was the first game i used single fire over full auto. It was great.
One of my all time favourite games. The final level was so awesome I cheated when I beat it.
Also, apparently the difficulty on the PC release got messed up by a distributor or an update and the common version basically has busted AI that can see through walls and bad water reflections. The original back in 2004 wasn't like that.
Fc 1 is amazing game, and graphics still holds up
I find this game extremely interesting because of it's history, Far Cry 2 and Crysis are essentially two very different sequels to the same game.
Instincts Predator and Far Cry 2, and maybe 3, are the only ones worth playing.
This is one of the best games of all time. I rank this as the 3rd best FC game after FC 4 and FC 3.
Paused this video to watch the, forgotten weapons xm29 vid... thanks for the suggestion
the hipfire accuracy is due to the fact you're playing it in 16:9, try changing to a 4:3 or 5:4 resolution and you'll see a great difference, as the game wasn't designed with 16:9/16:10 in mind
i beat on realistic without mode besides the auto scoller with val rhe fucking car chase is impossible after 4 hours i needed god mode for that section
edit: farcry classic is bad son the framerate is choppy and the difficulty is gone. you can mark enemies and the autoaims does the rest
My favourite is FC2
instincts series, if you have xbox 360 get the far cry instincts predator whis is esentially both games in 1 package with graphical improvements (it was specifically made for xb360, also it was quite fun to play it). On the side note i still kinda want to get the origional xbox just to play those two games. great video, was interesting to watch!
the detection meter does make a sound the music changes its a dynamic soundtrack
Didn’t come out like this
It was patched and it cause the game to break
Another great vid keep it up
I played this as a kid.
Nope, never heard of it. A lot of these old PC games are completely new to me. I'll have to check it out.
@@SyntheticMan Eidos game.. now available as a free download in a few places.
Project I.G.I or "I'm Going In!" as it was known in some regions.. well worth a ganders 👍
Did they add regenerating health in Far Cry classic? Or is it still medpack based?
I played this on medium and it's so hard in the later levels especially the trigens and those elite forces
Only Cry game I've played is Blood Dragon and I fuckin loved it! This one doesn't look as good. In Blood Dragon, you could mess around and have tons of fun without being killed in a few shots by enemies in a different zip code. It's also a nice short and sweet game, I totally recommend.
