I had a 400 latch arm fail after two years, and they warrantied it and replaced the whole headlamp with a 450. The latch arm on that one lasted less than a year and I just got the same replacement part as you but they didn't include instructions on how to replace. This video was helpful and made it an easy repair, so thanks! I'm still skeptical about the design. That latch arm seems like such an obvious failure point that it shouldn't be made from plastic.
Wow! I bought one yesterday. Decided to try it while I was still in the parking lot. Broke immediately. Walked back into the store, got an exchange and decided to put in the batteries while still in the store. Nope, the latch was broken when I took it out of the box. Really, two failures so fast. So, they gave me a third one. Opened the box and immediately noticed the latch arm was already cracked. Unbelievable! My heart was set on that model, but I had to opt for the Storm 400. It uses a different latching system. I felt the staff member I was dealing with was rather nonchalant about what was happening, even when I stated that probably all of the Storm 450's remaining on the shelf (there were lots of them) were defective. That little latch arm is under quite a lot of stress as it compresses the O-ring to keep it water-tight. Hope the new latch you got holds up. All of the other ones with quality control issues should have been recalled and not left on the shelf.
Nice video, friend. I made a couple videos about several of my BD headlamps failing as well (one of them, the same way as your's, with the latch breaking).
Bummed that I had TWO black diamond headlamp failures in one day: one had the battery latch break, the other reports that the batteries are low even though they are brand-new and the headlamp won't turn on. The 'low' batteries work fine in the headlamp with the busted latch. Seems like BD has some serious quality control problems, gonna hunt around for a new brand of headlamps ;-).
I reached out to black diamond by email. It's been 3 months and no progress yet. Still reviewing my case. I can't even punch out the pins to print my own. Can't believe how bad support is from them
I received a Storm 450 from Amazon today and the latch arm broke on the first try. Amazon support allow me to return it and they will send me a full replacement.
Hi! Thanks for the video. Is the replace latch noticeably harder/sturdier? Mine also broke today and I'm wondering if it's worth the hassle to contact the black diamond, or should I try to make one myself.
It appears to be holding up fine. I received the light with it already broken so I don't have a great understanding of the rigidity of the original latch! Hope this helps!
Been a Black Diamond user since 2019 and have owned 4 BD headlamps but this model is the only one that the latch got broken in half today. I have no idea where to order it in my country since the only store that used to carry BD headlamps has not been carrying the brand since post pandemic. It sucks that it happened to me today and I have a fieldwork next week so I had to order a Petzl with the same lumens as the Storm 450 as an emergency measure. I feel bad for BD since my old Storm model still works like clockwork.
Mine just broke. I've reached out to BD warranty department. I'm just glad it happened while I was home and not out on the trail. Have you had any issues with the replacement part?
I just had the latch pop on me. Was using the storm 450 and heard something snap, i jumped so did my dog, i grabbed the headlamp and it was open. Same issue you had it seems. About to email BD now
Can you use alkaline batteries in them? I thought the storms had sealed built- in batteries… seems like every video I see is different. Most be different features from different year models?
Yes you can use alkaline batteries, that is what I use. Diamond also sells a compatible lithium battery that is rechargeable, I believe it is called the DB 1500 battery. Hope this helps!
This is not a battery latch repair. This is a battery lid replacement. There are no instructions on how to remove the pins to repair the broken latches or clips.
Łukaszu czy wziął byś tę czołówkę drugi raz. Pytam bo kupiłem w necie i mam do wyboru storma 450 lub Petzla Swifta RL. Jest bardzo mało testów tego modelu jakkolwiek obiektywnych. Pozdrawiam.
