Ego probably had his celestial body destroyed and his brain was likely the only part of him that survived. He reformed himself into a planet again based on space debris. To other celestials, ego was thought dead which is why there were no consequences for killing him again.

In the comics Ego is stronger than a Celestial because he can match Galactus in a one on on fight.
