  • Award-winning jet skiing enthusiast Steve Gordenker remembers the good old days at El Capitan reservoir in East County.
“This was a very special place to the San Diego watersports community. We’ve probably been coming here for 35 years,” said Gordenker.
The water fun stopped when the City of San Diego closed all water recreation on its reservoirs on March 18, 2020 because of COVID-19. The reservoirs eventually reopened later that year. But jet skiing on El Capitan is still prohibited. Even the hand-painted sign posted at the reservoir's entrance informing visitors that "jet sking" was not allowed seemed like a misspelled afterthought on the city-run lake.

Ski at your own risk. Problem solved. Nanny state worried they will be sued. Put up clear signs, and have everyone on the lake sign a waiver. Let the people recreate. This general trend of closing all fun is getting bad. Drip, drip, drip. One step at a time. you can only do what we give you permission to do. Citizens: buck up and assert your right to recreate on public land and water. It is not a crime.

You've "invented" a reason (for not allowing the jet skiing) that no one is talking about. If your so-called "nanny state/lawsuits" was the genuine reason, why would the other California cities allow jet skis on fresh water reservoirs? Also, wouldn't your "nanny state/lawsuits" apply to salt water bays and the coastline? If it truly isn't "staffing levels," (as the City claims), it's more likely that SOME jet skiers have been 'bad actors' on the lake, and the City just doesn't want to deal with the issue.

So they used to have the so-called needed staffing, and now to save money they've cut that staffing?

When I lived in Lakside. I would use the road up to the lake for my training. Would ride around the parking lot to recover. I never saw a lot of staff. You might see one or two and that was in 2004 -2014.

@@AY-nr5uy IMO most jet skiers have no respect for boaters and fisherman.
