  • At a time when we're being asked to conserve water, the City of San Diego released nearly 250 million gallons of water out of the Hodges Reservoir to the ocean.

    No surprise here. Nothing we do in California makes much sense. "Over the past 30 years, more than 100 small dams have been removed in California. The 2015 breaching of San Clemente Dam on the Carmel River was the largest dam removal in state history. Several other large dams are targeted for removal, including Matilija Dam, four dams on the Klamath River, and Scott Dam on the Eel River.". We also won't build any more desalination plants and we don't consider hydroelectric power as "green energy" because environmentalists don't like it.

    Raised my kids in Boise, Idaho. Several years ago we suffered drought conditions, and our lawns were mandated to water 2 days a week. Our lawns were dying, but the city sponsored a "mud volleyball tournament" that required a water dump of enough water to create mud courts to a depth of 3ft! And the laundry alone was an added insult!!!

    I understand the need to repair the dam and meet state compliance, but it seems very short sighted and irresponsible to not develop some sort of plan to conserve 250 million gallons of water in the midst of a historical drought. All while I'm told I can't wash my car or water my grass. San Diego and the State of California need to give us real answers for this one.

    • @SanDiegoKid
      @SanDiegoKid Рік тому

      @KeyDx7 San Diego County has 24 reservoirs that are all linked by aquaducts in one way or another. Something could have been done. And even if it was not possible to retain that water, the more pressing issue is the fact that that dam is 105 years old and the powers that be did not have the foresight in the last 40 or so years to reenforce, repair, or replace it. It wasn't until their were issues that threatened catastrophic failure that they decided to do repairs and consider replacing it. Now we are over 10 years out from a new dam and we'll possibly lose out on billions of gallons of needed water because poor planning.

    Millions spent to fix the dam they’re going to remove in five years with a new dam 100 feet downstream. That’s expensive red tape! 5 years of environmentalists being a thorn in the taxpayers side. If they had their way they’d close the lake to recreation so birds can breed. Don’t know what’s worse, environmentalists or politicians.

      Not trying to be sarcastic, but if the old dam is leaking and could possibly even burst without repairs....and you think it's a good idea to try to build a new dam downstream, and have the partially-constructed dam be swept away by water flowing over or through the leaky dam....how does that work, exactly?

    So the dam at lake Hodges was built decades ago and now requires repairs to maintain safety. Prior to the repair operations, water transfers were possible due to the operating level being above the intake elevation of San Diego County Water Authority’s pumping intake. This has been like this for decades. The lowering of the water to facilitate repairs takes the water to a level that requires more lift than the pump station can do. People go crazy because they don’t understand how water gets moved from one location to the next. The City saved all the water that was possible before having to release water to the safe level required for repairs. I guess people just like to complain without understanding the situation.

      @kellyriley-duckworth4738 Рік тому +2

      I’m trying to understand here because initially this video made me very angry. So, what you’re saying is the City DID save as much as they could, but then this week they had to release more and it’s this 2nd release that couldn’t be saved? Thanks Gary, you sound like you know what you’re talking about.

    • @garybrooks1945
      @garybrooks1945 Рік тому +1

      @@kellyriley-duckworth4738 thanks Kelly. Yes your understanding is correct. Unfortunately CBS 8 did a disservice to the City because they didn’t understand the situation and presented it in a way that made it sound like they were just not doing what was necessary to capture the water during the final lowering required to facilitate the repair work. It was lazy reporting at best. Take care.

      @roberthall5616 Рік тому +2

      @@Ap_twsh Seriously. What planning do you suggest? Oh, yeah, build another dam "next to it." The plans are already underway to put another dam downstream to replace the old one. But it takes years, even decades to do that job. You say there's a "lack of planning," but the planning is ongoing and has been for decades. This story did nothing to inform anyone about what's going on, it only pushes the rage button.

It seems the dam is in need of repair and you can't repair it if full so they had no choice but to save what they could then let the rest go.
