There's an official variant on BGG that doesn't use the disaster tiles, posted by the designer. Just for anyone that stumbles upon this review / game and doesn't like that type of mechanic!
Everyone I’ve played with loves this game. Agreed to a certain extent about the disaster tiles. The symbols are kinda hard to follow, but even with all that in mind, a 5 player game takes no more than 45 minutes. Definitely glad I picked this up at Essen.
"Neo" is Greek, not Latin. This could well be the explanation, although the correct Greek construct would be "Neametropolis," or "New Mother City". (Compare "Neapolis," "New City," which in modern English is Naples.)
Very close. It is NEO (Greek for "new"). But the M stands for Mostaqbal (Arabic for "future"). How do I know this? It's called "Google" (American for "Google").
It's a reference to a Saudi Arabian project named NEOM (Neo and some world in Arabic that starts with M and means future, sorry, I'm not good enough to get that right)... 3 minutes of Googling, folks. 3.. Minutes...
Maybe you should’ve googled for three more minutes. I would go with the theory of Neo Metropolis. New City would fit this thematically, new future is pretty generic for this game. Also do you really think this guy is using Arabic in his game name? Does his name sound Arabic to you? It’s certainly possible, but I doubt it. On the other hand using Latin in an English context is quite common.
Love the comments on the rulebook. "Oh, my eyes!". I think if you didn't show the pages, people would think you're exaggerating how much is highlighted.
Played it 7 times already and I believe that disasters are not that significant for the gameplay, there is a good flow of cash at almost all times to avoid destroying your tiles. It is a good and very fun game.
Apparently there's an official variant on bgg where the disaster tiles are set appart with a timer so you know in advance when they gonna hit and you can plan for it accordingly.
Tom's reason for disliking this game sounds a lot like Zee's reason for disliking Galaxy Truckers - "I like building, not seeing what I built be destroyed". Maybe Zee isn't so far off base??
7 Wonders the board game, you say? Lol unfortunate about the disaster tiles though, I guess that adds a bit of interaction but maybe there's a way to tone it down a bit? Either way, thanks for the review!
21Tiles * 5 Coins = 105 Coins Equals 52 VP plus negative points for not having houses or power. Maybe a little more because of starting money or if others bought your starting resource. Thats a pretty bad score.

45m? Now I am interested
The similarities to 7 Wonders is obvious.
If you read the designer's blog entries about the design, he makes absolutely no secret of this :)
The designer I believe got inspiration from Neom project in Saudi Arabia.
Maybe:
neo = new (latin)
m = metropolis
--> new big city
That's what I was thinking when I saw the name.

Exactly - my first concept
Neom was a future concept city in Saudi Arabia. Check on Wikipedia
Is it to do with NEOM, one of the 3 future citues being built in Saudi Arabia?

Yup ur right, the word u were looking for is 'Mustaqbal' it means Future in English.

do you have a small model of hallgrimskirkja from reykjavik on your shelf!?

Diego García Campos I do tend to take the disasters out. Much better
Better than Quadropolis? Seems very similar to that as well.
Rowan Potter much better
I was really excited about this one, but I'm pretty bummed about the forced disaster tiles. I hate being forced to do "take that" stuff in games.
Apparently there's an official variant on bgg where the disaster tiles are set appart with a timer so you know in advance when they gonna hit and you can plan for it accordingly.
Could you tell me where your got that hat? I need one.
I really like tile-laying, but scoring this game looks like it would be a huge headache. And that rulebook! 😵
Once you do it a couple times it's honestly not that bad

Best game I have played in 2019 so far :)
Whaaaaat? A futuristic city? Why are you collecting coal, stone and lumber? What a lazy development of the theme
Xava Abulense I thought the same, but to be fair there's 3 eras, so maybe it's starting in the past and building into the future
@@randym5824 Or maybe some people have unrealistic expectations of what the future will look like ;)
Xava Abulense if it’s set in the 50’s then it would be about right?
No, I’ve no idea if it is.
sabreyegg whatever it means, it’s a really good game.
I do think there should be an option of swapping out the disaster tiles.
Sounds like you own the game and have logged 50 + plays...

2-for-1 coin to vp ratio? Can you just sell every tile if they are worth 5 coins each?
21Tiles * 5 Coins = 105 Coins
Equals 52 VP plus negative points for not having houses or power.
Maybe a little more because of starting money or if others bought your starting resource.

Seems like 7 Wonders, fiddly version.
That's why it called neom: de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neom
Sorry german version, here is the english one: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neom
Well NEO does mean NEW so... NEWMetropolis?
I think there is a city being built in Dubai called Neom. But I am not sure that has anything to do with this game.
Yes this is it, saw an interview with the designers where they explained this somewhere
I keep hearing elements I know from Seven Wonders...
This reminds me of 7 Wonders
7 Carcassonnes.
