- The young woman who died after being attacked by a dog in county Limerick last night has been named as Nicole Morey.
In a post on social media, Ms Morey’s sister said her heart is "shattered" following the tragedy which is believed to have happened on the 23-year-old’s birthday.
Emergency services were called to a house in the village of Fedamore in Ballyneety after 11.30pm yesterday.
Ms Morey had been fatally injured after being attacked by a dog and was declared dead at the scene.
Three dogs were removed from the house and at least one dog was destroyed by Gardaí.
Ms Morey’s body has been removed to University Hospital Limerick and a postmortem is expected to be carried out later today.
Preventing further dog attacks
Limerick Mayor Gerald Mitchell said more must be done to prevent attacks by dangerous dog breeds.
“We need further legislation to curb these unfortunate circumstances,” he said.
“I know that Minister [Heather] Humphries this morning has set up a specialist group and the quicker the legislation is brought forward, the better - to be safe for people of Limerick city and throughout Ireland.”
Justice Minister Helen McEntee offered her condolences to Ms Morey’s family and said the investigation into her death must be allowed to run its course.
“We have to make sure we allow the investigation, without prejudging what’s happened here, to take its course,” she said.
“We also need to make sure that if there are breeds of animals here that people shouldn’t have, are not safe, or pose a threat that that’s made clear.”
Garda investigation
Ms Humphreys also paid tribute to the dog attack victim’s family.
“A Garda investigation is underway and it’s important we establish the facts on what happened,” she said.
“I have consistently said that more action is required in relation to dog control.
“That’s why I have set up a cross-Governmental stakeholder group, chaired by the retired Deputy Garda Commissioner John Twomey, to examine this whole area.”
Gardaí from Roxboro Road are investigating the woman’s death and are asking anyone with information to come forward.

XL Bully dogs, and others dangerous breeds should be banned. You are not allowed to have a tiger in your house, we need to get real.
Can't have such animals as pets
poor girl. they should be banned all around the world 😢
those XL Bully's are a menace, the do gooders are not fooling anyone calling them gentle giants
I wonder though is it the owner's. I know I'm stereotyping here but in my limited experience it's normally idiots who have these dogs. Sometimes they are trained to attack by these idiots.
Maybe only certain people should be allowed to have them.
This I said will go on till the government get off there arses and ban these dogs. It's the last straw they said when the dog attack in enscorty. They brought in the leash law but no one no one has done anything since. We follow Europe in everything except this. These dogs are banned from several countries all except Ireland why only the government can answer this
The way they literally stuttered and wouldn’t confirm the breed & made sure to say any dog can attack because g** forbid we tell the truth about what is in our faces that bully breeds are horrifically dangerous
So.. they are not reporting that she was attacked by her OWN DOGS…???
well better her than anyone else, but serious; dogs are not humans. Dogs have been selectively bred for instinctual hardcoded temperament; humans have NOT. Bloodsports like dog fighting makes a lot of pikeys a lot of money, they are not going to tolerate genetic stock that can be softened out of bloodlust with 'love training and treats'.

You’re right about these dogs but show some respect for the victim here and her family.

That sounds like something a person would say who has a bitter heart. Please forgive people who have hurt you. Bitterness will slowly eat you alive. :(
I'm only now seeing this. Last night, my neighbours daughter said she was going to get her bully to attack my dogs. Told the police and they are not going to do anything about it as they said that she got to do it, then they might take action. Honestly, should we carry knives around us all the time.

@@Rick_Cleland lol far from it. Wales is a depressing country.
I have a 3 year old male bullmastiff and even tho he is a brilliant dog and I love him to bits he is extremely territorial and defensive of the house and I wouldn't ever have him around children or alone.with someone he doesn't know. It's such a huge responsibility having a guardian breed and personally I dont think I'll be doing it again, its just so much hassle
I see the attraction of having one. They are beautiful and really wonderful dogs in their own way. I remember when German Shepherds had a really bad rep and this was not at all deserved. Its a difficult one.
There are owners out there that I would not even let look after a goldfish let alone an animal that is capable of killing someone. What are we doing here? People are literally dying!!
X L bully dogs are so dangerous, much too big of a breed. So sad. 😢
It’s not just the size. Their temperament is like that of the highest category of Broadmoor patient.
Not just big. Powerful, with great bite force. And a strong territorial instinct.
Very sad
That girl is the same age as my daughter 😢 so sad..
These breeds of dogs are extremely dangerous and should be very restricted in people who should own them just like that young boy who was attacked in wexford a year ago as well those dogs should not be allowed of a lead and should not be in public unless they have a muzzle on to
RIP ❤
Garda does nothing if you report to them that there is an owner with restricted 🚫 dog and they don’t use muzzle and they even don’t use lead sometimes. They told me it’s not their job
Whose job is it?
My friend got one as a rescue dog, it grabbed him by the head, it had his whole head in its mouth and was applying such force he said he could hear his own skull creaking and cracking as the dog gnawed away at him. The dog held him for 20 mins before it just let go and behaved as if nothing had happened. He still doesn't know what prompted the attack, he was reading a book on the sofa and the dog beside him quietly. He returned it too the animal shelter. He recieved a lot of stitches about his head and face.
Why was it allowed on the sofa beside him? Sounds questionable.
@@S.Trades tell us more.....
I don't understand. The dog grabbed him be the head and was applying such force that he could hear his own skull creaking and cracking . He had to receive a lot of stitches and his response was to return it to the animal shelter.
@Smithpolly that's how Lee described it all to us, I saw the dog once, it seemed docile. I saw all the punctures and bruising about his head too. I never seen a guy so shook up.
@@AdrianWalsh-w6p My point is did he not give you some feedback on what the conversation was between him and the animal shelter when he returned the dog. It seems kind of an abrupt end to the story. What did the shelter say they were going to do with the dog?
Some morons think that dogs do not require any training.
"Oh it was cute as a puppy, but after that I lost interest".
Most dogs don't require special training NOT TO RIP THEIR OWNER'S ARM OFF.

Dog breed
Family pets do not attack for no reason, so there should be more clarification in regards to circumstances.
Strange how the breed of dog was not confirmed, or breed of others.
Prayers for the family at this time, such a tragic and unnecessary loss of a young life.
Dogs can attack anybody at any time. There is no getting around that. Even the most friend pet dogs can lose it first no apparent reason. With smaller dogs it tends not to be as big an issue because most humans can over power them. Even cats have been known to randomly attack humans.
It's has been confirmed it was a pit bull you know the ones people keep saying. I leave it to mind my kids he never done that before they looked at him the wrong way. I let him babysit for me.

@@Art-is-craft That is just not true, a well trained and socialized dog will never attack a person or other animal. There are certain breeds who are naturally more protective and loyal and they need special training but I do think, there are a couple of breeds, too difficult for an ordinary person to train. While the dogs are beautiful and I can see the benefits of having one around, I don't think we can have it.

It's not the animal, it's the owner fault and they brush under the carpet all this things without taking action. Shame!!
These dogs are responsible for a disproportionate 80-90% of all attacks and all deaths. It is the dog
Nobody is blaming the dog, any breed of dog can attack if provoked. But the size and strength of these dogs makes them unsuitable as pets. If she’d owned spaniels instead of xl bullies she’d still be alive.
It’s the dog. They’re bloodsport dogs and were bred by evil people to be FIGHTERS. These dogs gave into instinct is all. It’s like owning a mountain lion for a pet.
People need to understand that humans do bad as animals do but you can't put them all in one genre and label them "bad" humans have done unspeakable things in this country to animals dog fights, etc you are raised a monster not born one. The owners/people don't suffer nearly as much as the dog must for their hand in raising them
Stooooopid...
Nope… they were “bred” to be bloodsport fighter dogs. Herding dogs instinctively herd. Fighting dogs instinctively fight.
