    "Drastically reduced housing costs". We have heard this before with the 'Tiny House' craze. Within just a few short years, when the concept became popular, the price quickly jumped from an average of $25-30k to $65k. It will be interesting to see how the price of a Boxable Casita soars over the next few years.

      Nothing to tell. I'm not knocking it. Just pointing out that as they become more popular, they become less "affordable", which sort of defeats the purpose from the beginning. Yep, that is capitalism and it is the reason the US has so many millionaires and billionaires and is generally a good country to live in but we've seen many "fads" die out once the prices go up.

    • @proto57
      @proto57 Рік тому +3

      @master_misanthrope2715 Interesting. But they do say in the video that they have already "built about 350" of them, and they are making two a day.
      The price is crazy, though. As many here said, it totally defeats the main purpose of these houses, and one of their stated purposes: Affordability. A tiny home like this could be built for much less, from scratch. From what I understand they can be made around $30k to $60k. I've seen nice ones for $40k.
      Knowing that, the price should go DOWN from there, not UP, when put on an assembly line. So why are they getting more expensive? Maybe because they fold? Sure they fold, so the shipping is easier and cheaper... but the solution is the same as it has always been: Build it on site, by owner, or contractor. You can easily ship the materials just about anywhere.
      I'm no businessman, no contractor (although I've done my share of carpentry and renovations), but looking at this whole concept, and the descriptions, and price, I picture them disappearing in short order.

    I lived in 1 room efficiencies for years. Basically a master bedroom with an attached bathroom and thats the whole apartment. I loved it and think the tiny movement is a beautiful thing. I live in Naples, Fl and the housing issue for renters is huge, tiny home communities would be great here. One overlooked fact when it comes to affordable housing, large families get priority, and single or couple groups get left out. Tiny home communities would attract less large families and allow affordable space for lower-income singles/couples.

    • @burnyizland
      @burnyizland Рік тому +1

      I'd be worried using high temperatures on the right hand burners in case the fridge (probably cased in plastic) starts to melt. Not to mention what an elbow-bumping, claustrophobic experience it would be having it there.
      There's a lot of room for improvements here. I for one would never be happy with sliding doors, they get noisy and clunky over time and they don't separate the sounds and smells as well between rooms - how many of us want anyone else in the home hearing and smelling us go to the bathroom?

  • @3rdworldgarage450

    It is an interesting concept, but it raises a few questions. over the long term, it will require repairs and maintenance and I wonder how difficult it will be to service when compared to a traditional concrete block or stick framed home? How long do those styrofoam walls last and how long do the seals between the panels last? How hard is it to service the plumbing and electrical? How long will the roof last and what materials can be used to replace it? What is roughly the total cost to put one of these on a plot of land including running the utilities? Are they rated for snow loads? How about hurricane winds? If the costs are reasonable and these questions have satisfactory answers, it may be what I am looking for to put on a piece of rural land.

I only have one pet peeve w kitchens... A stove jammed next to the fridge! The fridge ends up w grease on it or food falling between the stove and fridge attracting pests. I feel this is a major mistake designers make continuously. If someone cooks they need accessible space on each side of the the stove, even a small space. Maybe a single style fridge instead of a side by side would allow for a small cabinet to the side of the stove or switch the stove to where the dishwasher is w a smaller fridge there. Everything else is so beautiful inside, I love the stackable aspect, neat

    When ever I see projects like this; being a semi retired Product Designer, I always try and think of ways to improve them. These Casitas are quite high inside so the bed could theoretically be placed on a messanine level at about 5 feet high, with either a ladder or some small steps for access.
    The underneath could then be used for a lot of different uses. For example: An electric bicycle workshop and storage; general storage of clothing and possessions; a gaming set up that could be enclosed like a small intimate theatre.
    Another idea could be a Murphy bed with folding desk. The Japanese have all kinds of amazing fold away furniture that would be ideal for use in such small spaces. The Casitas could have 'Multi-Uses' in just one small space. Just a few ideas for you guys anyways......

      I agree that the space is quite single-purposed for what could be a lot more innovative in the use of precious space. It’s a box, conforming to what financial institutions like in a finance-friendly “home.” But for those who want the combo of finance ready, enough space to work logistically and ready to live in quickly, it works. I could easily see developments of these, lot sizes of 30x50 or less, central amenity space. It’s coming.

    • @ronroberts110
      @ronroberts110 Рік тому +4

      I like your idea, and I would further suggest considering the option of a liftable bed that always stays horizontal. An electric winching system would not be technically difficult or expensive, plus it could have a manual backup crank for a loss of power situation. It could also be locked into a high position that would still allow someone to sleep in it (like a bunk bed) while an air mattress was providing a place under it for a guest to sleep. Whether the bed folds up or lifts, having the bed "gone" during the day is a huge asset to mentally enjoying what little space is available. Plus I would add a large covered deck to make use of the outdoors when the weather is nice.

I realize that the company is in its infancy, but I think they have a winning product in the long run. What I would like to see them do is develop a list of recommended, qualified contractors (licensed/bonded) who can do the setup/site work once the Boxabl has been delivered. Yes, rules & regs for tiny homes are very strict & limiting as to where you can have them, sadly. Any new housing being built is way out of the price range of the average income earner & there is extremely limited low-income housing for those on disability or in other situations. I have a friend who lives on $763/mo. She has lived in her millionaire brother's rental house for 12 yrs. paying him $500/mo & it's not in great shape. He is selling the place & wants her out. We have looked for over a year in this crazy market & economy, & a small hole in the wall slumlord rental starts at $600/mo plus the application fees, 1st month's rent etc. And those rentals are so abysmal you wouldn't want your pets to live in it.
      The application fees are near impossible for those living in poverty to afford, so I can see why there is so much homelessness. This is a problem our gov't fails to recognize or do anything about except turn a blind eye. If I had the money, I'd buy my friend a home & a car. She drives a 24 yr. old car & just prays it holds out & now O'Bidden is pushing electric cars on everyone & few if any can afford them.
      My car is 12 yrs.old & has been paid for, for years. My condo is paid off. I am retired & don't plan on buying a new car anytime soon & my condo needs a lot of work done to it. Interest rates are outrageous. I refuse to pay them. I cared for my mom in a nursing home these last 5 yrs after her stroke. She died in Feb. 22. So much of my life was on hold, to say nothing of what Covid did.
      I feel for those living in poverty. There is no way out, especially if they have debilitating health or mental illness. My friend now has breast cancer & is trying to find a place & move. It is exhausting. She has a very part-time job to try & make ends meet. There is so much red tape & excessive waits to get help. Her gov't rental assistance is limited to $200, yet illegal immigrants get free top of the line housing, medical care, phones etc. And most of them are dressed nicely when they arrive. This country has gone mad! This is unsustainable.

      For big cities the solution is to build up, not out. The further out you go, the longer your commute will be, the more time you'll lose in your life, the less you will see your kids growing up, and it adds to stress too...

      Wait wait wait wait...
      You think tiny houses are the answer to cost of living in a METROPOLIS....
      Your tiny little brain understands that in megacities like Toronto the most cost effective way to do housing is through apartment buildings and condos... not through inefficient tiny houses...
      You know when you got ASMR in your name and you are as unintelligent as you.. kinda shows that maybe we should be restricting rights based on IQ.....
      I have no idea how unintelligent you are to think that a tiny house is a good idea for a metropolis but uhh yeah...
      I am sure that people with enough money to buy land in toronto are going to put a tiny house on it.. lmao.. the land would be worth like 10x more than the house... LMAO!!!...
      Just keep renting an apartment if you want to live in the City or "Buy" a condo.
      The best thing you can do however is just.. not live in Toronto.. it is essentially the asshole of Ontario where most of the refugees and immigrants are placed.
      Want to afford living in Toronto? Leave Canada to another country that is currently dealing with civil unrest and come back as a refugee. You will be given more support than you would if you were actually born here.
      I absolutely love how my country spends more money on Immigrants and refugees than it does its domestically born citizens. It is a troubling state when your country is giving more money immigrants than domestic born. It is also not racist to point this out or xenophobic it is just stating the simple fact that a country should take care of its own people first before taking care of those from another nation.
      However Canada does not want a lot of domestic born citizens. Canada understand that by using immigration to grow her population through accepting refugees etc. She can build a population that is very divided through culture and religion and therfore very easy to manage due to the population being unable to unify because of cultural differences.
      The governments job is not to help us but to govern and control us into the most productive GDP possible.
      Sorry this is way to deep of a topic for the average person. Go watch TikTok and listen to ASMR..... meanwhile the intelligent like myself will be absolutely aware of the reality show known as life which is playing out on a global scale and is heavily controlled and manipulated by the elite.
      The Elite for the longest time were not even seen as being a real entity and people were actually attacked for thinking that there are underlying agendas driving society.
      To think that there are no underlying agendas driving the direction of society is to essentially spit in the face of society. The whole purpose of governments is to govern and direct our social development. They do so in a direction that is decided by the current leaders of the nations (Also Democracy appears to have multiple parties but the best way to give the illusion of freedom is to give the illusion of choice.)
      With the illusion of choice you now have a population that does not feel dominated as they are under the impression that they can actually enact change in their society and are more or less equals with their leaders.
      Just hilarious to see that the average 90-115 IQ individual is so easily manipulated and used. However it makes sense as our species is not successful due to our ability to think and problem solve. Our species is successful because we are able to manipulate and copy our peers just like any other great ape most of us are not intelligent most of us are here to monkey see monkey do shit.
