@@petertrott5107 We aren't all bad. I would consider myself pretty rad in terms of Maori rights but I'm also rad in terms of Tauiwi rights (non Maori rights). What I think the government is trying to do is use Maori and the new treaty principles as an excuse to justify cuts to social programs across the board and not uphold their side of the treaty (they still hold 260km2 of Maori land in perpetual leases - almost the size of Wellington).
Since the treaty was signed, the crown has been trying to undermine it through the use of the New Zealand Settlements Act 1863 (which is still being resolved today), the Tohunga Suppression Act 1907, Public Works Lands Act 1864 (still in effect), Education Ordnance Act 1847 (resulting in schools using corporal punishment against children for speaking in Te Reo Maori)
Everyone (and I mean everyone) deserves access to affordable housing, access to education, healthcare etc. Changing the treaty principles will not change economic outlooks for either Maori or Tauiwi.
This has never been a battle between Maori and Tauiwi. This has always been a battle between Maori and the government.

He has that’s what the bill is about. A bill is the correct and legal way to table what you want changed. Nothing can happen until this first stage is done, it opens up for public submissions and consultation within Parliament. This is what the Maori seem to be trying to stop.

But bills aren’t Acts (Laws we must follow), they simply table something for review, so while many are arguing there has been no discussion, the bill is the legal/formal way to start the discussions. It’s interesting, from my view 184 years don’t seem to have resolved the issues at hand, so to revisit them actually makes a lot of sense.
