I don’t think anyone winning Survivor will feel as good as this. I mean, look at all those jurors when she is announced as the winner. What a story, what a rollercoaster.
What a turn....SHE CAME....SHE CONQUERED. Just looking at the faces of the jury, there was stunned respect for her game. They never saw it coming. Man, she is awesome.
I really think her jury performance clinched it. I would’ve expected them to gravitate towards Mike for the game, but the way she pulled the jury to her side in the final TC, she fully grasped that win in her hands and stole the votes for herself. An excellent job from a true underdog winner.
One of the things I think is sorely missed is those little bits of strategic play in Maryanne’s play style. I think a lot of viewers expect big moves at multiple turns because they don’t fully understand strategic gameplay. I mean, for an example; when Maryanne gained advantages, she was quick to tell people, making her appear trustworthy and useful in vote offs; but when she gained the merge idol, she kept it entirely secret, making it highly unlikely that the others would ever even anticipate her having an idol in her pocket. She was able to use that small example as a means of controlling her threat level, getting to the end without being truly in danger, blindside Omar to show her gameplay, engineer herself to be in the finale no matter what happened next. She made herself useful to her tribe in a minor survivalist way by showing useful skills like weaving and food preparation, which mitigated her mediocre challenge performances pre merge, and helped her build her relationships, as well as joining Drea’s point about the social dynamics (which since she was in minimal danger, looked like a bad play but would help endear her to Rocksroy, Chanelle and Drea for the jury phase) building her jury relationships to a point of locking votes. While I think this was a jury open to voting for just about anyone going in, Maryanne had laid strong groundwork to get those jury votes in the end and all she needed was to be confident in the FTC to win. And she did that brilliantly.
