  • The High Cultist is one of the more powerful classes in Conquest of Elysium, but is he strong enough to take on a Large map on Knight difficulty? I think so, and it only took me four previous failed attempts to learn that!
Conquest of Elysium 5 is a versatile 4X/roguelike strategy hybrid game that boasts a remarkable amount of content and a depth of gameplay that isn't immediately apparent on first glace.

Happy to see another CoE series! I enjoy the cultist and I agree that he probably has the strongest magic to start with. The summons can be incredibly powerful and I like the fact that the stronger ones are gated by having to be near water. The control aspect can be frustrating and drive me nuts at times. But hey, that's Conquest of Elysium.
Also I appreciate you sticking through on these series despite losses and setbacks. This game more than most is about telling a story and seeing what kind of crazy crap can happen rather than simply trying to win.

The control part of the summons is frustrating, but I really prefer the astrology mechanic to the bakemono/witch/demonologist variable cost mechanic. That said cultist flawed summons can be pretty nasty at times, so I guess that balances it out

I completely agree, and this is something DasTactic says about Age of Wonders too: trying to min-max the game is only fun to a point, but it's not really the best kind of game for that. Its strength really lies in a mix of that kind of optimising the combat mechanics AND playing in a roleplaying kind of way, thematic or dependent upon some kind of unusual strategy the player wants to try.
I think in this playthrough I want to get Enslave on more Cultists and then get a charm-based gameplay strategy on the go!

Always good to see a CoE5 play through by a competent player. :)

Thanks Eddie. Competent is the best I can claim, I'm trying to be good at it now, and for that I'm having to learn to slow down and chill a bit. I tend to play too fast and make mistakes, although my aggressive style does work well on the harder difficulties if I can avoid the blunders. If you play too defensively on Knight the AI can get quite strong

Cultist is S-tier even ignoring any mechanical considerations for the sole reason that you can tell the devs actually did their research into Lovecraft's work by the references you'd only make if you had. For instance your starter Cultist of the Deep is named "Shantak" after the horrific flying mounts from the Dream Cycle.

I was immediately impressed by the whole "rise, decline, and fall of the Roman Empire" thing they had going with the ages the first time I played, it's rare a game even has something basic like that going for its parallel history let alone everything else.

Yeah, I totally get that whole "dying 5 times in a row" thing. I've usually laughed off people that say things like "There was nothing I could have done there" when they lose in a strategy game, but CoE5 is one of the few games I've played where that is a totally accurate assessment, especially when you're NOT playing a class with a super strong early game.
As the cultist in particular, I've actually somehow started with a "deserted port" on land... in the middle of the map, so that was a fun experience, having no way to summon my units and not knowing in what direction I need to head in to find water.

    • @battlemode

1:27 Yeah, sometimes the starting location just sucks. And an early Baron neighbor is hard to deal with if they beeline for you. As to the Fire Elemental. That's your fault. Soul Slay can't target mindless beings, which the Fire Elemental is.
3:45 Going along the coast would also be a good idea. You get a bit of chaff from coastal settlements.
4:01 If someone switches sides thanks to confusion or charm, you would get them as commander. Enslave always turns the commander into a normal unit. Some of the independent leaders are also not commanders even if you think they would be one.
4:20 Careful, you just lost the farm to some sneaky enemies. That big '-' in your color shows up when you lost control this turn.
6:02 There is some freespawn in the coastal settlement you could have taken with you.
8:18 You have the same problem with a few other summoning classes, like the Demonologist or the Witch.
8:59 You can't pick up Levys. They are stationary and can't move on the world map.
12:15 I usually don't put both of my starting commanders into the same armies. Less chance of an ambush ending your game. Though I also try to play on even if I lose my main commander.
13:31 White Kobolds are 100% immune to lightning damage. :D
16:28 Probably mushrooms. You just got a fungus years, so they have sprouted everywhere. A scout would be very useful.
    17:33 That's a change from 4 to 5. You can now just use a ship. :D
30:57 I noticed that you are a lot more aggressive than me when playing dominions. I usually don't engage until I am very convinced I can win. I also don't attack well defended places like big mines/cities until I either have a very overwhelming army, or have enough armies that I don't mind losing one. I concentrate more on getting the easy pickings first, pacifying my territory of the weak moving indies, and raiding enemies.
31:44 I think it was mostly the Penumbral and the Small Fire Elementals negating a lot of your ranged damage. Same as the Cave Grubs. Meanwhile the rest of the enemy army took your forces apart. Enslave is really good against a few high health enemies, but in army vs army situations it quickly loses a lot of it's impact.
35:34 Inferno is nice for Gem or Mine using classes. If you can get down there and deal with the natives. Oh, and you can dig out those buried Sinners, take them to the Ovens and turn them into proper demons.
36:25 I think the monkeys are pretty busy defending their territory. The Pale Ones as well as the Bakamono where running around in that area too.
36:29 Aren't some of your summons poison resistant?
Hope you have fun with the High Cultist.

Great info as always sir. I've never gotten far into Inferno, I'd like to try but not sure High Cultist is a good bet for that. Void is... challenging...

Void is the easiest to get into. Anyone can do it. Just go to the map's edge.
Getting out of the Void is the challenge. :D

Starting close to the Baron is pretty bad for most factions. Mass conversion for voice of El or aoe spells that target mr are the only early game counter I can think of. But if you're ignored by the Baron long enough to get good summons or mages, it's one of the weakest factions to go up against

37:20 - Despite many hours of play, something I never noticed about CoE5 until this moment:

  • @inumitovd7900
    @inumitovd7900 Рік тому +1

I also think High Cultist is one of the strongest factions, mostly because of their strong melee summons and abundance of Void Magic casters, who have a mix of mind control, confusion and magic damage spells whose big selling point is their high range. Having range 8/10 spells is really powerful because it means you can have both large armies and efficient mages at the same time.
That loss to the Pale one was really nasty, their frontliners are really tough, so unless your army has an overwhelming ranged weapons advantage, sending weak melee units against them will usually result in your archer being caught pretty quickly.
Checking if you have an astrology reading already before casting it is a good habit with the High Cultist, since more often than not they last a few months and casting it before the forecast runs out is just a waste of AP and sacrifices

Hey BM! would you say CoE is more accessible than Dominions? it's massively entertaining to watch you play both of these, but despite my best attempts they remain rather unapproachable to me haha. I wish the UI were a little more comfortable to use. I don't mind the map graphics but the fonts are so, so small it's uncomfortable for me to read. I guess I wish the windows were larger or something.
I also wish the combat logs were a bit more organized, with more spacing on the vertical scrolling. I'm okay with the sprite look with the map and such, but yeah, the UI is not the best for me.

    • @battlemode
      @battlemode  Рік тому +2

Conquest of Elysium is a simpler game than Dominions, and although they share the UI style, CoE5 is a lot easier because of that simplicity. I play in a very high resolution, you could try dropping your monitor resolution when you play to increase font size, which is what I do with many games I play now.
