Remember the roaring engines and iconic car chases in Smokey and the Bandit and Bullitt? Those scenes didn’t just make the movies legendary-they cemented the muscle car’s place in history. Today, we’re diving into the stories behind eight of the most legendary muscle cars that, like the ones in those classic films, have some surprising tales to tell.
On number 8 we have the 1964 Pontiac GTO. The GTO is often hailed as the one that started the muscle car revolution, although there were other performance-oriented vehicles before-we can't forget the Oldmosbile Rocket 88, of course.
Up to the sixties, GM even had an internal policy that limited engine size in intermediate cars to 330 cubic-inches. However, Pontiac's chief engineer, John DeLorean, and his team devised a way to bypass the restriction by offering a performance package for the Pontiac Tempest. The package included a 389 cubic-inch V8 engine, a Carter AFB four-barrel carburetor, dual exhausts, a three-speed manual transmission, wider wheels, hood scoops, and GTO badges.
