Had my wife turn ranger on, removed gas cap listened Nothing. Did same test on Explorer Heard it cycling. Replaced inertia switch, relay, new plugs & wires. Still crank no start. Started preparing my liner from truck bed. Ill try Fluid 2morro. I do have new filter. Quess ill do that 1st. Great video!
A trick to listen for the pump running in the gas tank is to take the cap off, then put a funnel in it, have the other person only turn the key to "On" not trying to start it, have your ear placed to the funnel at this time. It will act like a megaphone and make it easier to hear, for those of us that are not as good at hearing as we used to be! Good luck, brother! I am waiting on parts to come in to keep working on my 1997 Explorer.

@KevinVenturePhilippines Toughest part of it was removal of the O ring. Tapping it with screw driver & Sledge. Saw a video individual broke his. So be careful. If I can do it anyone can. Good luck.

This is a great place! My daughter heard a knocking noise prior to not starting and it was and is still at the grocery store!!! Great choices to try before fuel pump. Son in law had same problem but waited 15 min then it would start. I guess the knocking noises broke something. Thanks for trouble shooting for us.
that describes my 2001 ranger to a T. When the weather is warm, it starts just fine. Once we get cold temps, it will only start if I use starting fluid. but once it starts, it runs just fine. Is my fuel pump really the problem? The fuel pump must be pumping fuel once it starts running because it doesn't die.... Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! FYI, I have replaced the fuel filter.
Great video this is very helpful I'm going through this I changed fuse and relay most inexpensive option. That didn't fix it now I have to aave up for a fuel pump and fuel filter
Good video and info. A no start situation/ no fuel delivery could be also cause by a bad inyector relay on newer fuel inyected engines. Try swapping relays (ie.horn relay for inyector relay) and try starting the vehicle. If it does you have found your problem relay.
Most of the times relays are different, overall the gas pump relay....
On a car u do not need to drop fuel tank to replace fuel pump, that pump is accessible from under the back seats, I learned the hard way....
So it could be anything. Got it.
Always test the pump with a multimeter for 12v at the pump before replacing!
It can also have 12v but just be clogged or have a clogged sock, line etc.

What does it mean after you spray starter fluid and the engine runs but, doesn't shut off until you turn the key off?Every time I turn the key off, I have to use starter fluid.

The fuel pump relay is built into the fuse box and you have to bypass it at the fuse for the fuel pump and jump to another same size fuse port that only comes on when you turn over ignition .
Could also be a bad FPDM (Fuel Pump Driver Module) on some trucks, or the inertia switch needs to be re-set.
woah dude! when you fired up your truck. It sounded exactly like mine. That is my current issue. It's a crappy 2007 Ford explorer 4.0 sohc v6. Anyways but yeah it sounded exactly like your start up with fluid. it will engine shake, run rough, try stalling out, sputtering. Sounding like it wants to stall out

Great info so I have a 370 it reacts to starting fluid at the filters but not close to the throttle body my maf sensors are after the filters I’m dealing with a crank no start and the pump is new I’m hoping it’s a bad pump. Also should I unplug my maf sensors when doing this and I’m having inaccurate fuel readings

Hmmm... Sounds like it may be getting too much fuel when cranking... Is the coolant temp sensor reading right? Sometimes if sensor is bad is thinks it's cold and adds too much fuel.
@BlaserBuilds that's one of the things I've considered because once I idle say 5 minutes it's good to go even after driving 20 minutes turn off go in grocery store 30 to 40 minutes it starts right up. It tends to do it after sitting all night or after getting off work 🙃 wanna fix it but can't afford to be a parts changer lol

a21bravo right, just sayin that the GM fuel pump designs of this era of vehicles was VERY prone to burning up prematurely. Escalade, Silverado, Sierra, Yukon, etc used either the same or similar pumps in the early to mid 2000's. Great video by the way. Well explained.
You can also have a bad fuel pump driver module. 🤘
My fuel pump isnt coming on at all... normally i hear it kick on. Fuel pump switch under dash is pushed in...fuses are good...jus put new relay in. No fuel pump sound. Guess its time to drop tank huh!?!?
Our 2001 Ford Explorer sport cranks and doesn't start until the 3rd or 4th time. and When driving it sputters, and takes extra time before it gets to speeding up. We did a fuel pressure test and it was at 30 PSI idling. but there wasn't any pressure until the 3rd crank, the first 2 cranks there was nothing. Will the starter fluid test be accurate to diagnose if its the fuel pump?
Might be a clogged filter. Pump is running or it wouldn't have fuel.

I've a 1986 oldsmobile 98 v6 and I went out to start it dashboard lite up try to start it then try again and nothing oil, brake ,atl lights didn't come back on. Now i only have the sound when u put your key n the ignition. Fuel pump doesn't come on or nothing. I'm leaning towards the fuel relay. Will let u know what happens tomorrow I've to pick up the new 1.

My car has crank but no start but soon as I put starting spray in air intake then it stays running

No start condition. Starting Fluid starts it up momentarily. Spark and compression confirmed. The fuel pump relay clicks when turning engine over. When fuel pump is jumped manually, fuel pours out of one of the fuel lines confirming fuel is moving through the system.
Fuel pump, fuel filter and pressure regulator all replaced within six months.
Only thing I can think of is a bad ECU not telling the truck to run. Any advice?

@@manishk3693 I did actually! Removed the top manifold to inspect the fuel injectors. One of the fuel injector pigtails had exposed wiring that was making contact with the manifold, causing it to short out and preventing any fuel injector from firing. Nothing a little heat shrink wrap couldn't fix. Runs now! 👍
I have a 91 Camaro everything has been changed and it will start off ether and run like shit for a few minutes and that's it. Then out of the blue it will fire up and run perfect and you can drive it a couple weeks then one day I turned it off at a gas pump and problem started all over again. That's what I'll do look for a short out wire on injector. Thanks man
I've a 2009 Volvo 70 d5 and I have to hit the tank whilst starting the car when it doesn't start , I've changed the relays and I've changed the fuel pump twice , when i changed the fuel filters they are clean every time I've change them , what could be causing my problem it seems like the pump is going again but something must be causing the pumps to go bad 😕 any help would be appreciated because I'm at a loss for ideas and money 😂

I have a 2014 Impala and it runs fine, but when I add gas with the car not running it acts like it doesn't want to start. It usually starts on the second try, but acts like it's struggling. It doesn't matter how much gas I already have in the tank prior to adding more gas it still does it. If I leave the car running while I'm adding gas it doesn't do that. So any thought's on what's going on?
I have a 1987 2.8L s10 blazer and have been chasing a poor running condition and long start up situation. From swapping out old gas to replacing the fuel filter...not much changed. I needed to clean the two fuel injectors and partially rebuild the tbi carb. This made running and acceleration much better, but I still have a difficult time starting the vehicle. I am in the process of checking the fuel pump relay and possibly putting a gas line check valve in the fuel line close to the tank. I don't think the relay is giving the right signal to the pump at start up for the 3 to 9 second pump prior to full start or the check valve in the gas pump allows the fuel to run all the way back to the tank after the vehicle has sat over night. I am swapping out the relays today to see if there is a change there before the gas check valve replacement.

On my Mazda Miata the wires going to the fuel pump had been chewed by mice. Vacuumed out the mouse nest, replaced the bad section of wire and the problem was fixed. Going to store the car for the winter with lots of mouse killer this coming fall.

I know this is 2 yrs old but may help someone else. When a check valve goes bad, the fuel system loses pressure over time. If that happens it takes time to build pressure back up. If the car has lost fuel pressure, turn the key to run, not start, and the pump will run a little. Turn back off, then on, wait, off, on and wait. Each time will gain a little pressure. Try start after 3 or 4 cycles. You will learn how many times it takes. Eventually you need to fix it.
