• AMAZING KOLKATA Food S...
As a continuation of our North Kolkata Food trail that started from Chittaranjan Mistanna Bhandar and was followed by College Street, in this episode we are taking our explorations further to the historic lanes of Hedua, Bidhan Sarani and Shyambazar in North Kolkata that boasts of some iconic go to dishes that have been tickling our taste buds since eons. We were super eager to try a gamut of traditional street food that are popular not just for their phenomenal taste but also for their glorious legacy. To guide us in this quest of ours we have our gracious host Pamela Das a food enthusiast who know these areas thoroughly.
While passing through the footpath of the busy thoroughfare of College Street, we stopped by a vendor selling another hot favourite, quintessential Bengali snacks called Jhal Muri. This potpourri of puffed rice, potatoes, spices and mustard oil was as zesty, joyful and endearing and vibrant as the city.
From there we took a tram ride to reach Bidhan Sarani. Our destination here was the famous sweet shop Ghosh and Co. Pamela recommended their chocolate sandesh that are deemed as the best in the city. We were pretty surprised by this innovative sweet whose balanced chocolaty taste was a delight.
Next place was again a sweet shop that is an institution when it comes to the traditional Bengali sweet called Sandesh. A visit to the land of sweets in incomplete without paying a visit to Girish Chandra Dey and Nakur Chandra Nandi who have been selling just sandesh since 1918. A morsel of their coveted Jalbhara was enough to cement this claim of their indisputable reputation as the city's best sandesh maker. We also loved their Mohini Sandesh, coffee sandesh.
From there we went to try some chaat from 80 year old Hedua Chaat Corner. Their Singhara and tikkiya chaat were hearty and fun. Soon it was time to try another popular evening time Bengali snacks called chop or vegetable fritters at the celebrated Lakshmi Narayan Shaw and Sons shop. The Aam Choop and Beguni were delicious.
After such deep fried savoury treats we arrived at Allen's Kitchen to relish their special prawn cutlet. This greasy prawn fritter made with humble ingredients was truly indulgent.
Our penultimate stop was this iconic eatery named Mitra Cafe. We loved their best selling dish fish fry and chicken cutlet. It was soon time to wrap up this gratifying food trail that was full of flavours and stories. Stay tuned for more.

We have never heard this kind of live stories of indian freedom struggle. It gives me goosebumps. Very informative journey.
Mamta Kumari because all our history books are loaded with mughal-e-azam stories
@@ritom88 well said. Our true history and our freedom struggle is not in our history books. If we learn them we will start shaming the Nehru, Gandhis and the Indian National Congress.
Bhojpuri gana Bhojpuri video
@@reflectionOfLyf Very correct
It's not possible to throw every aspect of the freedom struggle in NCERT books. If you are interested in the subject, you have to do your own reading.
On 22 March 1912 both Bihar and Orissa division were separated from the Bengal Presidency as Bihar and Orissa Province. Before that Bengal, Bihar, Orissa & Jharkhand was one big province of India.

I spent my childhood in Bengal. I remember the Jhalmuri guy on the train. He would carry a whole contraption on his neck with straps. He had all the various condiments in small tin containers attached to a big steel container full of Muri(puffed rice)
He had a bottle of mustard oil with a hole on the cap. He mixed all the garnishes and added mustard oil . The next step was to put the whole concoction in a newspaper pouch. Then with flourish he would place a piece of coconut on top. Voila tasty mouthwatering jhalmuri is ready.
This reminds me of my trains journeys in Bengal too :-) It used to be an experience in itself :-) Good times :)
It's same even now a days.
mmm.So nastalgik!

This is probably my first UA-cam comment. I love your channel. I would not call this a food walk channel, but a good history channel. Love your eye for food stories, and your technique of probing for information. Wonderful video, takes me back to my childhood around Maniktala, Hedua and the likes. If you ever visit again, please try Boikali Sweets at Maniktala and the papdi bhaja served hot, near it. Thank you for the experience. :)

@Gargee Basak This is about 15-20 years ago, when I used to live in India. |Golden spoon" and "Kalimpong Confectioneries" used to be in Middleton Row near Camac Street. The food used to be just amazing, not too sure if they still exist though.
Very nice video i visited Kolkata in 2010 very nice place street food is greatt and at reasonable price. Would love to visit again.

You are one of my best food blogger👍👍
This Prawn Cutlet is just awesome. I don't know if Pamela took you to Aahar near Sealdah flyover!
Sapra sahab tusi great ho
sirji, i would also like to see the normal Bengali kitchen. The daily normal/ special dishes being prepared at home. This would be an icing on the cake😆👍
Loves bengal wish to speaks bangla at the moment, bengali is most beautiful language of its kind and alway stand apart. Most of my Kolkatan friends still have not got used to speak in hindi language not because they don't speak or understand but it's more of inhibition as if sudden switch over from dhoti pyjama to shirt trouser .
Simplicity and taste at its best. Can not find same combination anywhere in India.
Today I am felling nostalgic😞 you guys visited my school para(Except Mitra Cafe) . Every shop including Mitra cafe , I used to go there even had that free Televaja when I was in class 3🤣😂 thank you very much guys for exploring 😍
Even words like 'labra ' , ' chenchra ' are cuisines that are a mixture of different vegetables .
I really liked this episode . You took me back to my good old days in Kolkata.
God bless

Even Orissa aur Assam ke food mein similarities Hain Bengal se.

I am from Dhaka. In Dhaka and Bikrampur we put kashundi in jhal muri, it adds a punch.
Explore Food & Travel India
Just curious what fish you use in Kolkata for muri ghonto. We use ruhi or mrigel fish head for muri ghonto in Dhaka. By the way Dhaka used to have a very unique food culture within BD, but of late Dhaka food culture has become very popular throughout BD.
Chow Rajaa As a matter of fact we do put kashundi in both kod bel and peyara makha. We also cook daal with green mango and when we eat that daal we add kashundi while eating it.
Chow Rajaa Rui and Katla are traditionally popular with muri ghonto but of late few people are also doing with Mrigel as it is less smelly. I have no relatives in West Bengal, but myfather-in-laws mamabari is in Cooch Bihar, and they remained there. One day I would like to collect Bengali recipes from West Bengal, Bangladesh, Assam, and Tripura and compile them into one cookbook for all bangalis. I live in Toronto and I am thinking about a Pitha festival with people from India, Nepal, Bangladesh and other Asian countries, what do you think?
