Who Needs Songs When You Have… | The 36251 Progression?

  • Herein, I play four old jazz tunes which are all based on the 1625 36251 progression to demonstrate that it's not the song but the progression you need to learn! I could have chosen 100 other songs to make this point. I also expand on the variations for the 6th and 2nd chord so it gets a bit fancy-jazz-chord heavy but hopefully you can follow on. Master the progression at least in the keys of C, F, G, Bb and Eb.

7362514 and you loop I like to remember this... you might skip a number from time to time, but everything seems related to the circle of 4ths. It's also a good way to remember things like the 2-5-1, 3-6-2, 2-5-1 etc.

Hello, and thank you. All of this makes sense to me and is very much how Learned to play guitar. I am now embarking on Piano at 62 years of age. I apologize if I have not found the lesson yet, but do you have a lesson regarding basic rhythm accompaniment patterns to songs? Much like we have strumming and picking patterns on guitar to play as while we sing. Thank you Troy.

Thank you, Dan for an inspiring video lesson which I absolutely agree on “3-6-2-5-1” progression followed by “4-7” (turn around chords) then repeating the same progression. Often if I play say Am7 (in key of C) immediately followed by A7 (LH) then I would play C immediately then followed by C# (RH) melody line. That half-tone moves do give an extra flavor to the song. Much appreciated, Dan. Oh, by-the-way I love that “b7-3-13 (6)” voicing. 👍👍

Thank you as always, Andrew 🙋‍♂️ Yes, nice memory. Perhaps you might compose a little something using this progression you’ve mastered but in a less used key? Db?

    Dan 😕,
I just went thru a lil existential crisis.
Im scared I won’t be able to improvise/compose my own songs.
My dream is to become a producer (mainly RnB/neo soul/Rap).
Im tired of having to click in or use loops/samples for my instrumentals.
That’s the reason I even picked up the piano and along the way fell in love with it.
Im still at the beginner/intermediate stage but I fear I won’t be able to just improvise my own creations.
Is this something that can be learned ?
Have u ever felt like this in the beginning ?

Hello there! Thanks for your comment and for watching this video. Going through the negative ego car wash on the way to one's dream is often necessary. It's a sign you're actually making progress, even if it doesn't feel like it. Many don't even feel afraid of failure because they don't even take the first step, so there's no path to be afraid 'upon', so consider this existential crises a sign of progress. Second, you can improvise AND compose your own songs. The block is ego, which is only silenced by action. I recently posted a video on how to create little compositions that you ma enjoy: ua-cam.com/video/_PMmxVMMRiQ/v-deo.html
Composition is notated improvisation and improvisation is unnotated composition. They are the same and therefore are both found within you from what I call the 'inspirational source'. I propose you find a little time to read this article I wrote: piano-jazz.blogspot.com/2015/10/the-mind-triangle.html
In terms of real piano theory/technique stuff, you really need the 12 major scales down because everything you do will come from them. Here is the major scale mastery playlist: ua-cam.com/play/PL4cPpP-Ua6NUAnf54mQbk1xjbc4xDfu4K.html
Let me know in a few days of your progress.
      Best,
      Dan
