"I think it's totally normal that things are not okay in your life" might be my new fav quote by you - because it's so true. Wonderful new video. The topic of not letting go of inherited things and making it a problem for the next generations was very inspiring. Thank you for this ❤️
As a minimalist of almost 8 years, I found out that the only way to keep clutter from building up, is to not bring it in the first place. It took a few years, to figure that one out after constant declutterring. An other thing is that I now have a rule just to buy quality items, that I can maintain for years, or if it doesn’t suit me, could be sold for some money back. I also have been thinking of buying most of my clothes secondhand, as the depreciation of new clothes is way too high. 😅 I have also forced myself to sell off all stuff I don’t use. It’s very time consuming, but on the other hand makes me think twice about what I bring into my life. 👍
Ha! Big houses. I live in the American South so in addition to the McMansions of my time there are quite a number of typical “southern mansions” scattered about. I remember driving my mother (who was born and grew up in a four room log cabin) staring at them as we drove by. I would think, “Wait for it. Wait for it.” Then sure enough she would say “I sure would hate to dust that house.”😂 An apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.
I am 55 and have only been a minimalist for a few months..but it has changed my life. My wife doesn't understand why I am selling, donating and trashing so much. It's not so much a place in my home that is hard to keep clutter-free but the fact that I live w/ someone who doesn't see it as important.
I understand, many times we value different things than people around us or at least express those things in our lives in different ways. Hope your wife will notice how it's positively impacting your life and therefore improving many other things around you as well even if she isn't a minimalist herself :) Thanks for watching!
Hopefully your wife will come around to the concept. I'm constantly decluttering. I donated stuff from the Nineties recently. Why should I carry around something someone gave me almost 30 years ago, although I've never used it. We need so much less than we think
Wonderful video. I live in Southern California in a small apartment that is surrounded by huge (huge!) houses. I have a daughter in high school and all of her friends live in these huge houses. It’s a very strange feeling to live in a small apartment amongst them. I struggle with the belief that her friends parents perceive us as inferior or “poor” when in reality I am a minimalist with no debt and they probably are in debt millions. It’s really weird here 🙃
I just want to add a friendly reminder that it's not normal at all that these people live in huge houses! Here in Hungary it's the norm to live in small apartments and houses. Even if people have the money, they stay in the small apartments, because they rather spend it on other things.
Thanks for sharing this! I think you might be much richer or wealthier (especially in spirit) than most people even though it wouldn't seem like that to the outside with your possessions 😇 Thanks for watching!
Great video Steve!! The Swedish Death Cleaning is GENIUS!!! I think it's ever so valuable. My in-laws are in their upper 70's and my FIL has Parkinson's Disease and has limited mobility. We've mentioned to my MIL a few times about starting to pare back the "house treasures" (aka. clutter). She has no intent of ever doing that! In fact, it's as if she doesn't even SEE all of the things (clutter). She is a collector and has so many things of so many collections. She doesn't see the need to go through any of it before she and her husband pass. It makes me sad, first because us kids will be left to deal with the significant burden and second, they will miss out on the joy of going through things, handing down certain things, sharing why they are meaningful, relieving their children of a burden later. All the things.... I am thankful that I am Minimalizing now... I always keep in mind how it will be better for our daughter when the day comes that we pass.
All 4 of my daughter in laws grandparents died within a year and the 2 houses full of stuff left behind has been really time consuming and overwhelming for the family. Of course they are too loving to say it like that...but as my friends I could see the stress
Yeah, I've seen in my own life as well how important it can be. Thanks for sharing this! I hope many will read this comment and will get inspired from your story 🌱
I let go of many clothes items I was gifted by my family members. Today, actually, I declutter a shirt, it was a present. I did wear it once but it's just not my colour and style. I do feel a bit bad about decluttering gifts.
I appreciate a lot of your content - it does feel a bit formulaic, most topics from 2013-2016. But maybe there is nothing new to add to the topics. But i appreciate when you have good cinematic visuals.
In 2013-2016 I was a teenager not knowing much about life (still probably don't but at least I try haha) so I don't know what was talked back then about these topics but hope I can share at least some new ideas or stories with my videos 😊 And yeah, I think in general there's nothing new under the sun, it's just about what part of the journey you are in. I've learned things I share only fairly recently but I know some people lived like this already decades ago and I can provide them very little
Basic common sense can solve most of these problems, but it seems that common sense is in short supply. Buy needs, not wants, its that simple and keeps life less complicated.
Well said. I think our world is really a lot about wants these days. I think there's a time and place also for those but there needs to be a good balance. Thanks for watching! 😊
What’s the hardest area of your home or life to keep clutter-free?
Mind.
My phone photos
The basement. Just a month ago, my husband and I decluttered SO MUCH STUFF out of the basement... and now it's getting cluttered again.
@@odettegibbs2238 seconding this! Having memory sticks/hard drives because my google photos ran out of storage!
The attic 😮
I like you so much. I like the way you speak , the way you think, the way you live. I subscribed.
I appreciate that!

Those are so great habits, especially the one to not bring the clutter in the first place. It saves you from so much clutter! 🌿

- Driving by old large New England homes my mother used to say, “I won’t want to have to clean a house that big!”
😂😂😂
Yeah, I can't imagine the work it takes haha 😄
Wonderful videoxxxthank you❤

Maybe it’s worth demonstrating the benefits of your new values. But also, she might not have the same material values.

You didn't find it important either until recently. Your wife will have her own journey with possessions.
Marriage is compromise. Lead by example, not by preaching. And, if all else fails, recite the Serenity Prayer…
You are indeed sunny. Thank you for this 😌
Thanks for watching! 😊😊
The garage and the barn. Those buildings are so full of my hubby’s stuff that he might “need” someday. We’re working on it, though.
Sounds familiar haha 😄
That's if he can find it 😊😊
Be “glad” that it’s in the garage and barn.

Yeah I get it. I always try to think of people who would definitely need the item more than me and that helps to make the donation process easier 😊
i got rid many of my things at home
and it is so pleasant to see half empty,,cuz getting older, organisimg and cleaning is an agony😅
So many benefits 😉

Consistency over intensity 😉 keep it up 🌱

Oh no! I do love empty spaces in my house! I would get rid of many more items but I'm married to a not-so-minimalist man 😂😂.
Say you lost the scarf and are devastated 😂
I am so bad at lying so I don't even try haha
