The JC Penney store opened was originally a freestanding building which opened in late 1963 or early 1964. Although new, it was partly destroyed by the earthquake of April 1964.
I'm not sure how any buildings survived the earthquake. We had a good shaker of a quake here in Anchorage a couple hours ago.
Thank you for filming your walk through this mall. Keep up the good work!
I appreciate the nice comment, take care.
I remember going there in the 90's. I still have the silver and gold coin I bought from one of the mall stores. We went in August when it was very warm.
August is a good time to visit. Glad you had a good visit. Where do you live now?
Man I miss this place so much!
Weather is warming up a little here in Anchorage. Hopefully we can get rid of some of the ice and snow. Take care.
It looks a lot different without a layers of snow lol! I’ve only seen it in winter due the fact that i only visit family during the holidays!
Hehe I know I used to go snow diving during the winter days
Great video, brings back memories, thank you for posting.
Please could you do a video in the Dimond Mall including The Perfect Cup and the Arcade...
Thanks for the nice comment. I'll try to get to Dimond Mall in the near future. The Perfect Cup and Arcade are still there next to the movie theater. A pizza place moved up from the second floor not long ago and is across from the arcade and theater. Take care.
Greetings. I finally made it to the Dimond Mall this morning. As you know Spring and Summer are crazy busy here with work, family, and home projects that hold during the winter. The bad news is the only time I could get to the Dimond Mall was before it opened. Probably just as well because the last time I tried to record at the 5th Ave. Mall and South Walmart I was contacted by their security officers. I was hoping the Perfect Cup would open early so I could go in and get a coffee and show the inside. Unfortunately they did not open at 9 am as I thought and I had to leave for another errand before they did open. I did get to walk through part of the mall and at least show the outside of the restaurant and arcade. I'm getting that video uploaded now. Take care.
I already have plans to be moving to Alaska because I am getting freaked and tired and bored of hot humid summers down here in lower 48 states no matter where you go its boiling hot like into 90's and then hits into 100's I cannot tolerate it anymore Alaska is the only place for me to be at I think I would love it there for sure
Good for you. I moved up from the Midwest years ago and have not regretted it. Best of luck with your plans.
at least you didn't how was the last winter and other times during the seasons up there and now there is always people saying that Alaska doesn't get hot in summer its cooler then down here, so is that in anyway misleading or is that true I thought I might ask you since you are living up there and could tell me take care
I think last winter was "average" compared to the previous years where it was more mild. Lots of difference between Anchorage where I live and Fairbanks, the North Slope, Southeast part of the state, etc. Winter will last a good 5 months give or take here in Anchorage. Today felt like warmest day of the year with temperatures in the mid 70s at my house. The east side of town gets colder in the winter and warmer in the summer. They were probably around 80 degrees or maybe even a little warmer today. Fairbanks gets colder and hotter compared to Anchorage. Anything above 70 degrees is considered a hot day here for us. Part of that is the intensity of the sunlight and long daylight hours.
oh speaking of daylight hours how long is that internet says almost 24 hr daylight in Alaska I thought oh no cant be right that all over us same daylight hours and gets dark same in Alaska as down here in lower US they say sun goes down about 12am in Alaska I thought EH 12 am tats midnight down here. its 11:43 now where I am and dark what time is is there now and has sun gone down is it still light
i forgot to ask you this question is life in Alaska different than the lower 48 states, and also there is some sort of report that anyone could see a moose walking downtown anchorage and that also bears can be seen too i thought oh no they wont venture into anywhere like that, that they are too far out in the wilderness whats your thought about that
Hi John. Good to see you again. I bought a dash-cam, and may post some of my own driving videos soon.
Hello. What type (make/model) of dash cam did you get?
Nice video dude. It seems to be a nice place to shop because in a very crowded mall you´re not properly atended. I hope to go ANC soon. I enjoy your vids.
Thanks.
By the way, I was surprised to see Alaska Lottery vending at 2:45 approx.. I thought it was outlawed in AK.
Not really a lottery. Scratch off tickets, I'm not sure what loophole they use to get around the rules. We still don't have a lottery like other states though. It has been discussed to legalize it in the past. Take care.
I see they've added quite a few stores since I left in 2014.
Seems like some stores come and go on a regular basis.
great place!
123456 free Thanks.
Really good video
Thank you.
it's cool to finally see the inside of that place, but does it get much business? I know in the dead of winter people hardly want to be out emptying their pockets but does it get its busy periods?
Yes, it can get crowded during certain times. Take care.
I should hope so , that's a huge mall to sit empty. I know that in the Mid Atlantic the malls are really suffering. It's Big box stores now...
Does any one know how much more expensive is to live in Alaska than in the lower states? Like housing and food. I lived in Texas all my life but getting tired of the heat and every winter I wait for snow but we get nothing.
Walter Bonilla I used to live in Alaska and the housing is not too expensive as long as you do not live in the very cold areas like wasilla or chugiak you’ll be fine and renting a place is hell if you move to Alaska I suggest you buy a house instead, other than that Alaska is a great place
Jourdan Jones omg I wanted to like in Wasilla, but I’m thinking more of Palmer.
Only if it wasn’t so expensive to live in Alaska, I would move there
we moved from California so.. it's almost cheap :-P
How many malls are there totally ?
About 5 though, I wouldn't consider the University Center to be much of a mall anymore because it's now more of an office building for UAA (University of Alaska Anchorage) now. So the major malls we have here are the Anchorage 5th Avenue Mall, Dimond Center Mall (that one is the best), Northway Mall (I haven't been there in years), and the Sears Mall.
Forgive my ignorance, is it always this quiet?
Hello. This was recorded early in the morning when the mall/shops were just opening up so not many people. It gets busier but not too crowded except for holidays has been my experience. Take care.
Nice, why didn't you go inside JCPenney or Nordstrom?
Why should he?
Where are all the people?
At diamond center
It's A Bummer That The Only Nordstrom In Alaska Closed Even Though The Anchorage JCPenney Is Still There. I Am From California, And Which State Is Bigger?
A. Alaska
B. California
C. Texas
I'm not much of a Nordstrom shopper. I think New Hampshire is the biggest state. Am I correct?
@@mayaandjohn I Mean In Terms Of Land Because Alaska Is The Largest State
Damn! That is the deadest mall I've ever seen!
Taken when the mall had just opened up so it got busier I'm sure.
Alaska John well that makes perfect sense. I know you are probably excited about using your new camera. 😜
Where did you mount your hero5?
Just handheld if I remember correctly.
@@mayaandjohn great tip. I used hat mount in my fire pocket and that thing wobbled
That was mounted in my fore pocket
Everybody must be at work around about this time of the day?????
It was a Saturday morning just after the mall opened so not many people yet.
🎉🎊
Thinking about moving to Alaska in the future. Is there any good strip clubs there?
Good strip clubs as to be a customer at or to work in?
customer
Google the "Alaska Bush Company." It's all relative right. If you're coming from a big city then no not many options here. If you're coming from a tiny town in the buckle of the bible belt then yes you'd probably be impressed.
oh I am sure there is one in town somewhere
It's AK, ppl are trying to keep their clothes on! Rofl.
The mall at the end of the world....
That mall is SO EMPTY compared to the mall near me
I've travelled to dozens of different countries across the globe, and the one thing that every single nation on earth has in common? Almost every single shopping mall looks exactly the same no matter where you are! My spouse is from El Salvador, the first thing most people think of when they hear the name El Salvador, is poverty, you definitely wouldn't know it by walking through their malls! Marble floors, brand-name stores like Gucci, Eddie Bauer, Baskin-Robbins, Saks Fifth Avenue, and many many many others. They all have the same feeling inside with the same cheesy music, and mobs of women frantically searching for a good deal, and couches full of husbands waiting, eternally, for their wives to finish shopping! LOL! It's just weird, I was at a mall in a small city in China and I could've sworn I was back home in Toronto, it's like this strange, unknown international standard that nobody knows about that all malls must be geared towards women, with a special section for us men to sit and wait forever while our wives shop forever, LOL! Can you tell I hate shopping? I'm a typical man, I know what I want before I go there, park the car, run into the mall, get what I want, and run right back out to my car, and for the life of me, I'll never understand how, or why, women can spend hours, if not days on the end, just shopping, and often not buying anything, so ladies, what's that all about? By the way gentlemen, if your woman ever tricks you into going into the store with her, and tries on about three dozen different outfits, and asks each time "does this make me look fat?", do not, I repeat, DO NOT, under any circumstance, and no matter how tired, frustrated, or just plain pissed off you may be, NEVER say "no honey, that outfit doesn't make you look fat, it's the fat that makes you look fat!!!!!". if you want to get out of the mall alive, never ever answer that question, especially that way, unless you'd like to spend the next two weeks sleeping on the couch and cooking your own food, as I found out the hard way. If a woman ever asks you any question regarding an item of clothing and how it may look on them, just smile and nod your head, and resist the urge to scream as loud as you can so the entire mall can hear you!!!!, any answer you give, regarding how clothing may look on your woman, will lead you into a spiral of hell and despair, which is why I absolutely refuse to go shopping with her ever again, and instead just sit on the couch, or as I call them, the husband couches, and play with my iPad until either she finishes shopping, or, until your battery goes dead (nine times out of 10, the battery dies long before she ever finishes her shopping!!!! Why God, WHY????, what have we done to deserve this torture? I guess that's part of the "for better or worse" part of your vows they talked about on your wedding day, yikes!!!!
Wondering if you got paid to live there
You must be referring to the PFD (Permanent Fund Dividend). It was $1,100 per person this year. Would've been $2,300 if the governor had taken most of it. When you add up the extra costs for heat, electricity, housing, etc. up here it is cheaper to live elsewhere.
Poor sound, thanks
R.i.p build a bear
I didn't realize they weren't in the mall still. I was in a mall down south this past week and saw a build a bear store there. Too bad for Anchorage as I remember my daughter loved it when she was little.
This Mall look dead as hell! How do they survive paying rent?
Probably the druggies and liberals
This mall is always dead. I went to it 7 years ago & from the looks of it, NOTHING has changed.
Hey johann maybe you should just be quiet and mind your business
