For your tape, the 720 x 480 output has the incorrect aspect ratio. The people look "skinny" because the pixel aspect ratio has been altered. in addition, there are huge vertical black bars on both side of the video. The correct choice was 640 x 480. One other thing I wish you had shown was the custom settings that would show under the audio tab.
i purchased this capture device. Had to download some windows support programs but once i got it loaded it works perfect. Thanks for taking time to show me this.
I watched another video about this device and it was revealed to be a old non fancy capture device inside. Very much buyer beware with this box of tricks
Here is something to think about. I want to capture my family VHS videos in HD1080p format. I purchased the Elgato Video Capture device along with a couple different up scalers. I also purchased the Elgato HD60 Pro. Now the question , is it worth upscaling when most of my family and friends will just be using their phones to view the videos. I did several captures with the Elgato Video Capture , and yes looking at them from my 32” UHD monitor was not that impressive. Then I sent a few videos to my iphone 13 Pro and I was thinking not too bad for 640x480 - same with 720x480. I did use S-Video for my source. I plan to experiment a little more before I decide which way to go .
When I did it all again, I upscaled it as much as I could. I figure with technology changing so fast, we are going to loose the battle of resolution as time goes on.. just my 2 cents... hope that helps
The software is not friendly in terms of editing as 'we go' to exclude part of the original movie. We end up transferring the whole tape or large sections of it. Meaning, we will need to do editing later in a second step using an editing software. What would be a good simple software to segment a long MP4 to smaller pieces without losing further resolution?
Great video! I’ve been trying to convert my family’s old VHS tapes, I saw that it said compatible with iPad when I purchased but I’m unable to get the application to open once it’s downloaded to files. Im unable to do it on my Mac due to it being so old and out of storage. Any advice on how it could be done on an iPad?
I recently purchased one of these to try to use with VirtualDub, but apparently they don't play well together! I'm getting no image when I select it as my device. Trying to figure out what hoops I need to jump through to get them to work, but not having any luck. It DOES work with the Elgato capture software, and with OBS, but not any variation of I've tried of VirtualDub for whatever reason.
Good to know, I did not try it with other software, I figured if you were getting this, you were going to keep it simple and just use what came out of the box.. so thanks for sharing.
In my case, it doesn’t work in OBS at all because it kept saying used by other software despite only OBS opened. I’ve sold this card and now I’m using a BMD Intensity Shuttle, Matrox Mini MX02, and a Pinnacle Liquid Edition Pro 6.
I really appreciate all of your videos. Have you, by chance, made one yet that shows the ins and outs of your settings in OBS? The hardware arrived yesterday: S-cable, Yitrox upscaler, power supply, Elgato HD60X, and new external hard drive. I've installed OBS and watched a lot of videos on their site, but I'm still tweaking and trying to understand resolution and pixels and stretching, etc., and what to select in OBS as the input and output sizes and FPS, etc. Are there any other tips, tricks, or videos that you recommend? Due to your UA-cam channel, I now have the confidence to tackle digitizing boxes full of home videos. Thank you!
No, but this fall I plan to do some newer videos, and OBS is in the queue, Need to get through my master bathroom remodel before family shows up next month.. Stay tuned. and I will keep all this in mind for the OBS video. And that is super that you have found the courage to do this.. I knew you had it in you :)
Hoping you can help. I am getting a "no signal" on a black screen. The capture card is connected. But, I am using an AV to HDMI 720-1080 output connector because my dvd player does not have the red/white/yellow connectors.
Nice review! The Elgato Video Capture has been great for me as well. So far, I've just been using it with an old Hi8 and an old MiniDV camera, but the VHS conversion phase is coming as soon as I can find the time!
I've used one on my MAC (running Ventura) for a few months. It was great. Then all of a sudden NO video signal (but I do have the audio) I did not change the physical connections. I tried the coax (yellow) and it did not work as well as the S-VS connection and no video. I reinstalled the program and no luck. Any ideas? TIA

Great video, thank you! I just uploaded some old family home videos VHS to my Mac using the Elgato software. I noticed that the video preview during recording was better quality than the final downloaded result. Any ideas of why this may be?
Did you set the maximum format options? I do like that device, but ultimately if you want better quality, the upscaler and the Elgato Capture card does produce a better image.... It is good for what it does
I just bought one of these for my Mac. Super easy to use, but very disappointed with the encoded videos. They looked great going in, but were very soft and scene changes had digital glitching. BUMMED!
Wow really? When you say scene changing and glitching what are you experiencing? Could you upload a sample to your UA-cam page I would like to see that. Interesting I did not get that. But then again I am on windows. Wonder if that could be the difference.
No, it was directly deinterlaced by Elgato Capture Software at 29.97 or sometimes variable frame rates at 29.95 or 29.96. Worst of all the size was at 640x480 which is a long gone outdated PC resolution.
I was really disappointed with this capture card. When I learned that it uses the exact same chip as cards that cost $20, I knew why. Low bitrate, introduces noise into the image. Definitely wouldn't recommend it to anyone.
I also used the cheaper ones, but I liked the software that came with the Elgato, my cheap one would only save in MPEG and the MP4 format was much better.. But thank you for the feedback.
OBS Studio is free capture software, and all the streamers use it because it is free and all the streamers use it.. it is nice software for capturing video and more
Try to check the settings or reinstall the drivers because this product used outdated drivers so it does have problem example in Windows 10/11. If that didn’t work, try to email Elgato customer service.
FireWire is how I did mine. I also liked the fact that mine were done on a digital camera so the video retained some meta data like the date of the original filming. I plan to make that video also.
When I transferred my Super 8 Tapes, and my MiniDV Tapes I used the firewire card with my camera's that supported the firewire connection, then for software I used a program called ScenalyzerLive v4.0... It is simple but got the job done. scenalyzer.com/ It is no longer supported.. but it still works.
As the elgato is $88 I'm considering the HD60 X (external) for $149 with the upscaller (another $49). I have VHS, 8MM, and mini to convert so this will handle them all (via component) ?? Once on my PC I'm thinking I can make a DVD ?? or any other suggestions/ options to "show" them (like on a TV). Also, if I want to play the dvd on my TV is there any special "burning" settings ??

Or is it necessary to go from my camcorder to a VCR to the upscaller to the Elagto to the PV ??? @@MiddleSiggysDigitalWorld
Sir, thank you so much for making these videos. I have approx 250 VHS tapes dating back to 1982 and 15 or so more recent miniDV tapes that I have been wanting to convert for quit some time. As you say, I only want to do this once so for a Capture device, would you recommend the $87 Elgato or the Elgato HD60X with the $38 Yitrox Upscaler (I have an Apple Macbook Pro)? Does the upscaler work with the $87 Elgato as well? Playback Device: Samsung DVD/VCR DVD-VR325. Thank you agin for all of your hard work. The lessons are very informative and really well done. Joe
I would go with the upscaler (Yitrox or if you can afford it the Geffen) and then a capture card like the HD60(x) or the 4k version.. That is what I ended up doing with all my tapes after I did a bunch of converting with a lot of the equipment I used in all my videos.
@@MiddleSiggysDigitalWorld Thank you so very much for your reply. I went with the Yitrox and HD60 X and have enjoyed expirementing. If I may ask your advice on two things 1. My VCR has a HDMI out, can I use that to plug into the Yitrox HDMI IN? I thought I saw on one of your videos that you mentioned you should use Composite from source to upscaler and 2. with most of my tapes having been recorded on TV and/or Camcorder I'm trying to decide if I want my future viewing of these files to be on Computer or TV. Is there a good middle of the road resolution that will give me the flexibility to view on either or? I don't have any plans to put on UA-cam or stream.
I have the Yitrox upscaler and the Elgato HD60X as recommended in one of your other videos. What software do you recommend to capture, minor edit and burn dvd? The Elgato 4K capture software for the HD60X has no editing software.
Capture = OBS Studio, Edit, I use Vegas (not minor) and burn... I have not burnt a DVD in ages.. I think I last used something from Roxio.. but it has been more than a decade since I did that
When capturing, I noticed that the sides of the video is not neat. What I mean by that is on the sides of the image, there is black foggy strips (very small). Overall, it looks like the video is not framed correctly. I tried all 3 preferences, looks like the lowest does not do that. Is it the tape that is faulty ? Like for instance the tape you show in the video, it's a perfect neat square. Imagine if on the sides, you would see black strips moving as the tape plays
Actually, at 5:41 on your video. if you look on the top right corner of the video (that is what i mean) sometimes it is small and sometimes, it goes all the way down of the side
Antoine, generally that might be because the analog video is not clean, to your point, on an old TV you would not see the actual edge because it would chop it. Because the device is over scanning the image you get everything in the signal. A way you could make clean edges is use a crop in a video editing software.
Nice review thank you. Do you prefer to record vhs tapes with an upscaler and an elgato hd60x or cam link hdmi like you said in your previous video? Or is this elgato capture video better for recording? Thank you.
Very helpful videos. I've struggled with how to convert old tapes, & you've given me the push to go ahead. But I can't find the Elgato product you recommend (HD60 Pro) for sale anywhere, & it's not listed on Elgato's website. What do you suggest as an alternative? Thanks.
I have pressed the stop button at the end of my recording and sometimes it gives me “The recorded movie could not be opened for further processing” And it won’t let me use the Trim at that time. Can you tell me what I may be doing to cause this problem? Sometimes it works as it is supposed to.
That might be that the MP4 file is getting corrupted somehow, I would suggest writing support at Elgato, minimally uninstall and re-install the software to refresh it, that MIGHT work.. Never saw that one.
I’m using a Mac desktop and wondering how it would work with it. I’m just getting into Converting my VHS and have heard great things about this device. Also do you know how I would use the upscale devices with a Mac?
For the Elgato Video Capture device - the device is supposed to work fine with a MAC, (I don't own a MAC, But I did see a video of someone use it with one, the software looks almost the same, hardware wise should be the same technology) For an upscaler. you would get an upscaler, (watch my video on that) then go from your VCR to the upscaler, that will convert the video to 1080p then you would want something like the Elgato HD60X which is an external device, and then you can use OBS Studio to save the HD resolution videos on your system. Hope that helps..
Hello Siggy have you ever done a comparison video for the Elgato capture device here vs the pro or external capture card? Torn between these two devices. It’s about $200 for the external card I need for my Mac
Personally the capture cards and the upscale do a much better job as they will capture at 60FPS and the picture was always cleaner. I would go with the upscale and a capture card over the Elgato usb device if I had the budget. Which is where I ended up personally.
So I have had better luck with the upscalers and the capture card. Mainly because they capture at 60FPS and seem to remove the interlace which makes the video look smoother. I was still impressed with the USB Elgato device, but I choose to ultimately stick with the upscaler and the capture card. Hope that helps
Hi! i was wondering if you know why i have no issues recording my old vhs tapes and moest of my older consoles, yet my NES has insane stutter that only occurs through the elgato video capture.
Video game signals are strange, I did dive into that a little, and I found that some of the game manufactures did some "tricks" with their signals to make the analog TV's back in the day do "fun" stuff. Those "tricks" can play havoc with some of the cheaper upscalers. There are some specific upscalers that are meant for video game consoles, but they are not cheap, one that I looked at was the "OSSC SCART" for $139. Do some research on OSSC - Open Source Scan Converter, then welcome to the rabbit hole.. :) thanks for watching
Just food for thought. The "final thoughts" section of the video should be a summary of what you think of the product, not a thanks to the viewers. Good video otherwise!
@@MiddleSiggysDigitalWorld The Elgato USB capture card is licensed to my friend and won’t work with my Mac. I ordered my own Elgato card, registered it and it works grate. Thank you Jim

Please verify software and driver installation", so I was not able to move foward. I removed it and installed it again but nothing. I have a new laptop -windows 10. I noticed a lot of people were having this issue. Please help!!
I have not directly with the Elgato, or when I use a decent upscaler, but I have read about when you have dropped frames the sound could get out of sync depending on the number of frames dropped. This could happen for a number of reasons, but when I watch a single video I do not notice this. But I will say, when I tried to line up the multiple videos (for example the 320x240 the 640x480) next to each other, I did notice the videos would get just slightly off sync from each other, but not my much.. I think this is due to the dropped frame issue I am describing. Hope that helps..
It's because your PC is running slow. The usual culprit is dust in the CPU cooler. It could be a slow hard drive. It's best to use an internal one separate from your OS drive, really, so it's not busy.
It's not the CPU, it's the elgato software, while capturing everything is synced, but sometimes will mess up when putting video and audio together in the final step. I don't capture full tapes in one take anymore because of that, I do 30 min then stop, check the result if I have to go back and try to capture some section again. It's a pain in the ass, I would recommend another capture device that you can use with OBS directly.
@rubenthehuman it's because frames are being dropped in the video conversion process because the CPU is too slow. Don't be tempted to record at 60fps if the original is 30fps it just makes it worse.
@@sang3Eta it's impossible that my cpu is too slow, any cpu from the last 10 years is enough to run this, and there are no other processes interfering. It's because of inconsistencies in the tape, once it hits some point where the VCR loses tracking there is a good chance the audio will end up out of sync. With some of my VHS it happens consistently at certain points. While capturing it creates some temp "timeshift" files, so I imagine it uses that to sync the audio when creating the final result. The syncing seems more consistent when capturing using OBS or virtualdub.
When you say ebay ones... If you are getting the same product from ebay, I would assume it is the same. If you are referencing other devices, I would say I don't know, it depends on the other device and its software. If you check out my other video where I compared a few of the different products, I will say "Yes" the Elgato device is the better option. The software is better, the encoding (codec) is better, and the video quality is better. I have not put out the deep dive into the other cheap version of the other device I tried, but I was very disappointed.. If it were 1990, I might have given it better marks, but compared to today. Go with the Elgato or better.. hands down. Here is the link to that video : ua-cam.com/video/JMnLN0oGkq0/v-deo.html Thanks for the question.. Have a great day
@TheFurrry I suggest get some old second hand capture devices which performed better than this Elgato Card because sometimes things can go wrong like captured in different fps and drivers issues.

It turned out perfect following your advice ! Looks sharp now. This video helped me a lot and made the process so smooth and easy. Thank you very much
Is there a way to full screen the recording display?
Nice review thank you. Do you prefer to record vhs tapes with an upscaler and an elgato hd60x or cam link hdmi like you said in your previous video? Or is this elgato capture video better for recording? Thank you.
My preferred way is the Upscaler + Elgato HD60. I do think that method produces a better video and gives you more options.
Very helpful videos. I've struggled with how to convert old tapes, & you've given me the push to go ahead. But I can't find the Elgato product you recommend (HD60 Pro) for sale anywhere, & it's not listed on Elgato's website. What do you suggest as an alternative? Thanks.
I believe it's available on Amazon as the HD60 X.
I have pressed the stop button at the end of my recording and sometimes it gives me
“The recorded movie could not be opened for further processing”
And it won’t let me use the Trim at that time.
How do I capture with chromebook? I bought elgato hd60x and yitrox converter ?
I don’t own a Chromebook can you record on that? Does the hd60x or OBS software work on a Chromebook?
Has anyone been successful using this with iPad?
I’m using a Mac desktop and wondering how it would work with it. I’m just getting into Converting my VHS and have heard great things about this device. Also do you know how I would use the upscale devices with a Mac?
For the Elgato Video Capture device - the device is supposed to work fine with a MAC, (I don't own a MAC, But I did see a video of someone use it with one, the software looks almost the same, hardware wise should be the same technology)
For an upscaler. you would get an upscaler, (watch my video on that) then go from your VCR to the upscaler, that will convert the video to 1080p then you would want something like the Elgato HD60X which is an external device, and then you can use OBS Studio to save the HD resolution videos on your system.
Hope that helps..
Thank you!
:) thanks for watching
for some reason when i use this when i have n64 footage the colors are flickering
are you doing it direct from the n64? some of the console games will adjust the display rates to achieve special effects..
@@MiddleSiggysDigitalWorld yes I am using direct n64 but my gamecube footage looks nice though
Just food for thought. The "final thoughts" section of the video should be a summary of what you think of the product, not a thanks to the viewers. Good video otherwise!
Thanks for the feedback. That helps.
do you have to use their hardware or can you use other capture device with their software?
Their software seems to be keyed to the hardware. It did not find my other devices only the official Elgato hardware.
@@MiddleSiggysDigitalWorld Can I buy used Elgato Capture card from a friend, or is it registered for one person only?
I don't see why you could not borrow your friends.. I borrowed one of my friends before.. sure.
@@MiddleSiggysDigitalWorld The Elgato USB capture card is licensed to my friend and won’t work with my Mac. I ordered my own Elgato card, registered it and it works grate. Thank you Jim
What resolution is recommended to record the VHS tapes?
I would go with the 720x480, watch the video around 3:05 in
@@MiddleSiggysDigitalWorld I disagree. For VHS tapes on the Elgato device, 640x 480 is the proper choice, to preseve the original pixel aspect ratio.
Thanks!
@@MiddleSiggysDigitalWorldwell if you need 720x480 or the old NTSC 720x486 you need a higher quality card to do so.
I can not find the 4 videos I uploaded. I looked everywhere. 😢 HELP!!
Jeanie, look at the video at around 3:07 that is the menu location where the files will be saved. I think that is what you are asking.
@@MiddleSiggysDigitalWorld Thank you. I think I'm finally figuring this thing out!!
SO THERE'S NO WAY TO PAUSE AND CONTINUE RECORDING. WOW!!!!!
Does this work on windows 7?
It should but I did not try it. Windows 7 and 10 and 11 are all close in the kernel so it should be fine
I just downloaded el video capture software to my laptop but I get an error message saying: " Device could not be initialized. Please verify software and driver installation", so I was not able to move foward. I removed it and installed it again but nothing. I have a new laptop -windows 10. I noticed a lot of people were having this issue. Please help!!
Did you have any issues with the audio syncing with the video?
Avoid Elgato Video Capture. It's crap. It's capture quality is very awful. Mine was directly to recycling facility.
Is it any better than the cheaper ebay ones?
When you say ebay ones... If you are getting the same product from ebay, I would assume it is the same. If you are referencing other devices, I would say I don't know, it depends on the other device and its software.
If you check out my other video where I compared a few of the different products, I will say "Yes" the Elgato device is the better option. The software is better, the encoding (codec) is better, and the video quality is better.
I have not put out the deep dive into the other cheap version of the other device I tried, but I was very disappointed.. If it were 1990, I might have given it better marks, but compared to today. Go with the Elgato or better.. hands down.
Here is the link to that video : ua-cam.com/video/JMnLN0oGkq0/v-deo.html
Thanks for the question.. Have a great day
@TheFurrry I suggest get some old second hand capture devices which performed better than this Elgato Card because sometimes things can go wrong like captured in different fps and drivers issues.
