    Thank you both for that highly refreshing overview. It was succinct and easily understood, unlike so many others. I am often deterred by tutorials and reviews that are over-complicated with content which is regarded as superfluous. I have had the Elgato for some years but never managed to experiment and use it - your encouraging video has spurred me on and I hope to make time to do so. Many thanks - Greg.

    This is also the only USB analog video capture device that works with the latest Macs, as it has a 64-bit capture application, compared to some of the others on the market only using 32-bit capture software (the Mac OS since version 10.15 Catalina can only run 64-bit programs.)

    Thanks so much for this review. I was able to take the 10 VHS tapes that I had and transfer them to digital files. I did have an issue on my laptop where it continued to fast forward while playing. Called Elgato for help, very nice people, however they weren’t really able to figure it out, but I switched to a different computer and everything worked great. So it probably wasn’t there issue. But worth mentioning in case someone has trouble. So easy. Now I can donate my VHS player and clean house. Thanks Again.price is now down to 89.99 on Amazon.

      Congratulations on getting your 10 VHS tapes transferred to digital! Woot! Hadn't heard about the fast forward issue before so thanks for mentioning it. We've had it work flawlessly on our laptop, but that's good to know.
      Just a note for anyone who purchases the Elgato. When done transferring videos one could always resell the device on eBay and recoup some of your investment. 😃

      I think the fast-forward issue happens with any laptop that has less than 64 bits.

      Thanks for your comment Greg! Any device that sends an audio signal plus a video signal through either S-Video out or composite (Yellow) video out can be used with the Elgato device. That should include many DVD players. The Elgato device does NOT support HDMI cables.

    Hi. Great video. Im from Ireland. I have the Elgato Video Capture. I have been converting my VHS tapes but when I finish and check the video the audio is completely out of sync. The audio is fine when I watch during the capturing process but when I watch the file on the computer afterwards, it's totally out of sync. It's so frustrating. My video player is a Philips dual VHS and DVD player. I'd love some help or any ideas on what I can do? Much appreciated. Mike

    • @FamilyHistoryHero
      @FamilyHistoryHero  3 роки тому

      Hi Mike. So sorry to hear about the sync issue with sound. I've found Elgato's support folks to be pretty responsive, so I'd start by reaching out to them. As a workaround for what you've already captured it's possible to un-link sound and video tracks in a number of different video editing programs, and then use the Rate Stretch tool to adjust the video to match the audio, but it's unfortunate to have to resort to that. HitFilm has an "Express" version (fxhome.com/hitfilm-express) that's free (they will suggest you make a donation) that could accomplish that for you without too much learning curve. The trick is to line up the video and audio so they sync at the beginning, and then rate stretch the video at the end so it syncs throughout the clip. There's plenty of instruction online on how to use HitFilm Express.

      Hey Thomas, thanks for the comment! We've gotten used to HDMI delivering both sound and video through one cable, but S-Video is an older format. S-Video doesn't include the audio signal, just video, so yes, the RCA connectors are necessary.

    If using this on a Mac, go to top menu bar, then click preferences. You'll have some options for enhancement, put the completed file anywhere you want, as the default is you video folder... Use of an external drive recommended for long videos. I was unable to find an S-video cable, but one is coming next couple of days. I've heard on other reviews that the improvements are miniscule w/ S-Vid, but will give it a try. I've done several videos already after editing using iMovie. Resaved onto external HD to keep space clean on the SSD in the iMac. I suppose given the technology back then with VHS, MiniDV, and other formats, it's OK, but don't expect crystal clear images or much color balance - But, VCR's and other playback devices (usually the camera it was shot on) are like dinosaurs these days. And, of course it will only record in real time playback 😞 so be prepared for a long wait if you're doing long ones or more than a couple at a time. If you are into editing, on the iMac, iMovie will do a good job for titles, transtions, and quick rendering in .MP4 digital format.

      Thanks for your comments related to the Mac. It's definitely wise to edit those old videos or you'll bore people to death! It's worth it, though, to pare it down to the good sections that are truly worth saving!

    Does it allow to choose a container besides MP4, like MTS, MKV or VOB? Does it allow to choose a codec, I suppose that it uses AVC for MP4, but what about DVD-video compliant output that requires MPEG-2? Does it allow to adjust bitrate? Does it allow to preserve original interlacing, or to choose deinterlacing method - either 30p or 60p? Reviews on Amazon are inconclusive, but make me think that the software always converts video to 30p, which was OK for UA-cam circa 2008, but has become unsatisfactory after UA-cam enabled 60p mode. Could you make a screenshot or just a text copy of the medatada of a file that it generated?

    I don't see any vhs players that have S-Video. I've been using regular RCA inputs on my elgato for years now, but am looking to enhance the quality of video transfer. Does S-Video help with this? If so, where do I find a vcr that has an S-Video input?

    • @FamilyHistoryHero

      Hi Anthony, We have a VHS deck with S-Video out, so there are some that were made that way. The best bet might be to do a web search for "vhs player with s video output" and you'll get hits on possible units for sale. S-Video does have a bit of improvement in picture quality if you can find it.

      Hi Syed. The Elgato Video Capture is a current device with software that should be up-to-date for current computers. The EasyCap2.0 is a very old device with lots of cheap knock-offs, and the software hasn't been updated for years (Windows XP, Vista, 7). Some people claim they have been able to use the device with Windows successfully, but buy it at your own risk in our opinion. We tried one on a Mac and it was worthless.

    Hi Charlie, you and Linda have gone the gamut of what I am needing to take on now. In one of the other videos to Linda. I explained I have over 344 tapes of various media to transfer to digital. Before I start spending money it appears this Elgato I might be able to use and maybe not, but I would also ask you both what you feel the best route to go maybe for me? I have four of the digital video cameras I used, still, one thought of mine was buying on Ebay again or a similar one for the mini 8 tapes, the one I have door is stuck open (all Sony cameras). I have a file with the pictures of these cameras and the input they have on each, which none have RCA jacks (I would attach here for better visual, but no go on YT). Anyway, I was wondering if there are possibly other splitters or adapters for these cameras that you may be aware of? Also, I don't know if you're familiar with the Sony transfer home movies and digital photos to DVD device, but I have one of those as well. Do you think it feasible to go that route copy all to DVD (or a waste of time, already did like 75 of them over 10 yrs ago) anyway, then turn around and move them from the DVD to digital a lot of work, but trying to think it through my best options? I would LOVE Linda's and your advice. Thank you for any and loving I found ualls channel.

    • @FamilyHistoryHero
      @FamilyHistoryHero  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Lisa, so glad you're enjoying the channel!
      We do a ton with photo scanning but when it comes to converting videotape to MP4 you will undoubtedly find others who are more expert than we are. That said, here's my best take.
      Those Sony direct-to-DVD products are no longer made by Sony, so we haven't tried them. It would definitely be an extra step to transfer to DVD and then re-export to a digital video format like MP4. Hard to say whether or not you would end up with a loss of quality as opposed to going straight to MP4 with the Elgato.
      The Elgato Video Capture device will work with any cameras that have RCA-style or S-Video line-out connectors that transmit an analog signal, and you should be able to easily find adapter cables for many of the other styles of analog output jacks, such as 3.5 mm (1/8") stereo or stereo/video to RCA. eBay or Amazon should have lots of choices for adapter cables.
      If the output jacks on your camera are something other than RCA or a standard 3.5 mm round jack they are probably some sort of digital output such as USB, Firewire, or HDMI which tend to be oblong or rectangular. If your camera only has a digital output (USB, Firewire, HDMI) and no analog output (3.5 mm or RCA) the Elgato won't be an option. I'm not an expert on transferring digital video via USB or HDMI from a camera to a PC or Mac, but here's an article on Lifewire that may provide some help: www.lifewire.com/upload-videos-from-camcorder-to-pc-4692265

    • @FamilyHistoryHero
      @FamilyHistoryHero  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Kevin!
      We're total Mac people at our house, but we'll be the first to admit that the USB-C ports on Macs are mostly a royal pain. It's a bit of a mystery why Apple has stuck by the USB-C standard so unswervingly when it continues to have such limited connectivity in the real world.
      The short answer is that Apple makes a USB-C to USB adapter for $19 with free shipping: www.apple.com/shop/product/MJ1M2AM/A/usb-c-to-usb-adapter
      I know $19 is expensive for an adapter that you shouldn't have had to buy in the first place, but I'd recommend going with the genuine Apple cable and not a different brand. USB-C can be finicky and the Apple cable is designed to give the correct performance for that port.
      Here's the TLDR on USB-C:
      USB-C was originally envisioned as a sort of Swill Army Knife port that would be able to handle a wide variety of functions from fast charging to external displays. Unfortunately, USB-C has become a mess of tangled standards that result in uneven implementation and mixed results. The upcoming USB 4 standard may help resolve some of these issues (USB 4 will be implemented with the same style port as USB-C), but performance and compatibility will still vary A LOT depending on the cables you buy. Here's an article in Apple Insider that does a good job explaining the whole story: appleinsider.com/articles/20/08/24/usb-3-usb-4-thunderbolt-usb-c----everything-you-need-to-know

      If all you have on your video camera is a white output for audio, then you will not be able to have stereo sound. The playback device is not capable of stereo sound output. I do not know the software as of yet, but it will either have the audio in just one channel (the right or left), or you will have the same audio in both speakers when playing back.

    Thanks so much, Charlie. I have a couple of questions. I own a VHS/DVD player, so I can convert them on this device. The ones I've watched, though, are thirty or more years old and are degraded. Would I get a better video using Elgato, or would it be the same quality as I can get from my player? Is there software to improve the quality? Also, the tapes have several different events on each, so is there a way on Elgato to eliminate some parts of the video and leave others in? Thanks.

      Hi Lois,
      The Elgato should give you much the same quality you see on your TV. I'm not currently aware of any software to improve quality, but there may be something out there.
      The Elgato software allows you to trim the finished capture at the beginning and end. But you can just start and stop the capture wherever you want on the VCR. You can see what's playing as it captures. So queue it to where you want a segment to start, begin the capture when you start the VCR playing, and stop the capture when you're at the end of the segment. Hope that helps!
