  • Join me on a hike to Alto de Garajonay, the most popular hike on La Gomera island. This is my favourite hike on this beautiful Canary Island, and one which I have done many times.
The trail (known as Ruta 7) takes us to the highest point on the island, where we enjoy spectacular 360-degree views of the island and the surrounding sea. We can even see the island of Tenerife in the distance.
The hike is a relatively easy 2.5km loop, although there is some elevation gain. For an easier walk, you can take the paved route up and down.

Nestled in the heart of the Garajonay National Park, this hike offers an unparalleled opportunity to explore the diverse landscapes and breathtaking vistas that define the island.
A wide paved path leads walkers toward the summit, eventually narrowing into a dirt track. For those seeking a less challenging route, an alternative paved trail also leads to the summit, ensuring accessibility for a broader range of hikers.
The hike (Ruta 7) starts from El Contadero, a convenient starting point with a small car park within the Garajonay National Park. However, the car park can fill up quickly, and the trail's popularity means it can get relatively busy.
Alto de Garajonay is the highest point on La Gomera, reaching an elevation of 1485 metres. On a clear day, it offers a 360-degree panorama of the island. The views can extend beyond La Gomera, with the majestic Mount Teide on Tenerife prominently appearing on the horizon.
The trail is a testament to the island's natural beauty, winding through trees and open landscapes that offer stunning views for most of the hike. While a little steep in parts, the ascent is manageable and rewards hikers with the serene beauty of Garajonay's dense forests and the awe-inspiring vistas from the summit.
For those looking to extend their adventure, La Gomera's network of trails offers numerous options. The hike to Alto de Garajonay can be varied with longer routes starting from different points on the island, such as Pajarito or the Laguna Grande visitor area.
The island's climate, characterized by constant temperatures between 15 and 25 degrees Celsius, provides ideal hiking conditions year-round.
    LA GOMERA
La Gomera is a small volcanic island of impossibly steep mountains and ravines. It has a wild stunning coastline and some great beaches for swimming.
The island is also home to palm groves, banana plantations and the Garajoney National Park with its massive, dense, magical forest.
Many visitors are drawn to better-known Canary Islands, such as neighbouring Tenerife. However, we’re here to show you that La Gomera has a unique charm. This island offers the same mild climate and breathtaking scenery but with a quieter atmosphere, fewer crowds, and a more relaxed vibe.
