"I'm guilty in Slay the Spire of essentially I would say tunnel-visioning on the most recent piece of advice I received" Every game, NL. That's... why we're here
This looks like it will be an awesome run. One thing I want to say about that intro is: don't be afraid to throw a Hail Mary and replace your starting relic if you do not like your normal options. I have won multiple runs relying on Runic Pyramid of all things, because it makes it so much easier to set up those big Wrath/Divinity turns as the Watcher. Worst comes to worst you lose the run early and get three free combats which could be better than your other options anyway.
I feel like the the oscillating issue Ryan has with the watcher is a result of the way her cards all work. On any given run you either just have an incredibly powerful set of disparate cards or you don’t and there isn’t a need to worry about a cohesive deck in the same way you would for the other three cause you just power through and destroy. You’re left dying to a bad draw and not being taught what was the issue with the deck.
I think this is true partially, but to his points I also find the balance of prioritizing upgrades (Campfires), elites / questions (relics), mobs (potions/cards) is intrinsic to the game and what makes it refreshing to play. It's kinda fun to teeter about that unknown line of prioritizing these on different runs. And maybe it's because those mechanics (not watcher) are all equally good (or bad) which is great balance
@@FickleWid you definitely have a point and that’s all valid, I just mostly mean like with say a poison deck you can intuit what you needed, with an ironclad block deck you know what you missed. With the watcher the cards are all kinda independently good and sure there are slight independent deck archetypes but mostly the gimmick of the watcher is “pick and play good cards” so when the good cards don’t work you can’t really learn what to do better next time as easily as if a focus deck doesn’t play out
I know you said you think this was a lucky run, but I don’t think it was luck that got you this win. You did get a bit of luck with your rare cards and some relics. Your Vaults and Gambling Chip allowed you to curate your hands so you didn’t get a bad hand. Vault also allowed you have set up turns where you could play powers or add Safety’s to your hand OR have an overly aggressive series of Wrath turns in a row knowing the enemies cant hit you back. Obviously that played a big part in why you won, but notice how easily you destroyed the last boss despite Gambling Chip only affecting your first turn and both Vaults being LONG GONE from the deck? I think what helped you the most this run was taking the inverse style of cards that your normally take. What I mean is that is you look at the issue the Watcher has (how do I make sure I’m in the right stance on the right turns?) and your solution normally has been to take the cards that retain and enter stances then exhaust while not taking too many other retain cards so you don’t clog your hands up. Not only that, but those stance cards exhaust meaning you’d normally take multiple copies of each. That ends up giving you turns where you’d draw bad hands full of cards that don’t do anything aside from entering a stance. This time you took Battle Hymn and Deceive Reality so your hand would contain attacks and defends that retain, while also not taking any of those stance cards that exhaust. You pretty much always drew a playable hand. Every stance change card you had in your deck did something other than change stances and exhaust, and you just waited for the right stance to unload all your retained Smites. I think this is definitely the way you want to build this character. You didn’t get lucky, you constructed the most pogged Watcher deck.
Ever since you started the A20 grind for watcher I've been trying to keep up, was a pretty cool experience competing haha, glad to say today I've managed to complete A20! Keep going nl you got this :)))
It's the entire trilogy. The Egg gets Frozen when he is stuck in the Ascension grind. Then he gets Toxic because he is annoyed and is losing confidence. But from the ashes he returns as the Molten Egg.
Hey NL, this was an absolute banger of a run, neatly showcasing what makes the watcher fun. I have also noticed that you seem to somewhat undervalue strength gain on the watcher. Whenever you enter wrath all damage is doubled which essentialy doubles any strength buffs you have. At a low count it understandably does not make much of a difference, but once you hit +3-4 strength even the weakest attacks are suddenly hitting like an upgraded strike. But hey, your run, your rules. This has been my TeD talk thanks for reading.
It's not like the deck needed it, but certainly he would have been well-served by picking up Tantrum from the first Act 3 shop. He already had 1 strength from the doll relic, and 1 energy to deal 16, enter wrath, *and* shuffle into a relatively thin deck would have greatly increased the rate at which he managed to enter wrath.
@@deneb112 for sure this one was a simple win, however as we have seen, some of these watcher decks are lacking gas in the offence department. With even a mediocre comination of scy and curses just duvu doll can take a watcher deck to the moon with power, even without picking up so many lucky oppertunities and strong cards.
NL, just a reminder that wish can also be played for gold. I would argue gold gain is the intended use for wish during floor fights (coupled with omniscience its worth a LOT of gold, easily a couple of relics worth). Please don't view it as just "plated armor for 3 energy".
I'm gonna be honest here, I think this is definitely one of the better "performances" by NL, if not the best. He didn't overthink it, he picked some cards he doesn't always respect and he really looked at the run as a whole. And for me personally, I gotta say, I kinda yearned for a run that wasn't empty fist, empty mind into empty my soul. Well done Ryan, very well played.
Gambling Chip OP. Legit OP. Limit it to two cards, and it'd still be incredible. With a thin deck, you can basically draw whatever you want on turn 1. With a thick deck, you can have poor construction, poor luck, and still squeak by. In a deck that relies on set-up you get punished way less for not having high stall potential. It's just super fucking good. I could maybe be convinced it's not the GOAT, but it's definitely gotta be top 5, and in my mind, it's in direct contention with boss relics.
If not on the lookout for backseating skip When you have Lesson Learned, floor fights have increased values over events. (similar to other "snowball when killing creature" other attacks).
The deck really just feels like an upgraded base watcher deck. No special synergies, no fancy stance dancing, no a million attack with talk to the hand, just really straight forward solid basic one card one effect stuff. Well, and of course 2x vault, scrawl, gambling chip, act 1 molten egg, act 1 lesson learned...
he really does just overrate talk to the hand unbelievably. without 2 or 3 of them stacked, it's just crap. also hilarious how much he loves talk to the hand but looks down on wallop (which btw in eruption is literally 4 strikes and 4 defends for 2 energy and 1 card).
@@lanthimum3611 hard disagree, talk to the hand is easily the best block card in watcher's card pool, arguably the best in the whole game. I think he even underrated talk to the hand, by not upgrading it fast enough. Wallop is not even in the same postal code as talk to the hand.
I was losing my mind at him not taking tantrum or crescendo and literally only having one way to enter wrath I'm so glad he beat that last fight but it would've absolutely been 5 minutes faster if he had literally just a crescendo
He has a mod to hide Act 4 related stuff. Makes for a better viewing experience, given that he never goes for the heart, IIRC he said that he considers it too hard.
Unrelated to the video but does anyone have any information regarding NL drip availability/ what the prices usually look like (with/without transport for EU people)
Probably your best decision (but you made many really good decisions this run) was looking for that battle hymn. You really understood what your deck needed and how to build around that. I will say, you undervalue devotion/divinity as a win condition. Your deck really was a divinity deck waiting for an enabler--cards like safety let you turtle while you gather smites. The smites build naturally while mantra ticks and you defend, then you just delete everything in 1 turn. That's really the only think I can think to criticize about the run, but it's not really a criticism (because the run was obviously ridiculously successful) and more just a, "hey, look at this thing you might've done."
I know this question has probably been asked a million times but I can't find where someone has asked on a recent episode but, does anyone know why the key pieces to reach the heart aren't available to him on a his runs?
No idea. I thought that to unlock the Watcher you needed to win a run with each of the previous characters, and the first win with each unlocks a piece. So Watcher + no keys shouldn't be possible. I am obviously missing something because that's what we have here.
@@Mantosasto Yeah I was under that impression to and I just checked the options for the game and it doesn't seem to be a setting that you can toggle off. Interesting.
