Two huge special teams plays really altered the entire game - the fumble, and the blocked extra point. What a Super Bowl!
Actually, I had to delete my original comment because you were correct. if we would’ve gotten that extra point, the Chiefs would not have been able to tie the game with a field goal at the end of the fourth quarter

The Chiefs didn’t even sniff one for 50 years and y’all had your shot at them twice taken selfies in the end zone on the first one was pretty stupid. Sherm pointed out that Brock didn't have enough time to throw because Spags called for lots of blitzes and pressures. This was on the Oline that allowed Chris Jones to run through unimpeded. Definitely need to address this in the offseason. That would have made up for the defensive breakdown coverage as well as the special teams blunder.
McKivitz completely drop the ball and blocked NO ONE when Jones was right in front of him.. Unforgiviable
It’s also on the one who is calling the plays ….ya leave the fullback in the backfield to take care of the blitzing chumps ! But NO ! We had to have empty backfields on more than a couple of plays and it did exactly what spams wanted …it disrupted our timing to our detriment!
Which is a weird approach considering Brock was the top qb vs the blitz, but that may be a sample size thing. That game vs the Giants where it was nearly 80% blitzes probably tilted the numbers
@@juliantanderson9 I think this depends on the type of blitz packages. Spags has disguised blitzes that caused confusion in the Niners Oline and opened rush lanes for Chris Jones who was totally free to get in Brock's face.
The Greenlaw injury was huge.
Definitely was. I’m glad that it happened the way it happened as opposed to during the game or I know the niners fans would have 1000% blamed it on the chiefs. That was freaking wild the way it happened though, like what are the odds of that happening like that?

Yup, 49ers lost the game in the 1st half when they couldn't take advantage of how poorly KC was playing. 49ers should've been up at least 3 scores at halftime.
Yeah. Ideally, before the end of regular time, the Niners should have run that last 3rd down play and either would have had the 1st down or a 4th & 1 and could have done a QB sneak, then keep running for the TD with little time left on the clock for the Chiefs to come back.
Chiefs fan here and damn the 49ers played their asses off, the first half defense just dominate the Chief's front line. I was stressed out till the end and this was one hell of a game on both sides. But we are lucky to have such a legend. Mahomes pushed the team to win on shear will and unreal talent. But no shame in the 49ers and mad respect for one hell of a year you guys had and one of the best super bowl games in a long time. No real major mistakes, no real bad ref calls. Just great FN football. See ya next year.
Purdy's 2nd overall year, 1st year starting whole season was a mostly a success. Aside from loss to Chiefs in SB, Purdy proved he can make plays & take care of the ball vs tough defenses in the league. He proved a lot of doubters wrong along the way.
Again, he did all this while still in his young career! He has a great future ahead of him.
Please Purdy is trash! Dude missed two open touchdown passes! They had the most staked team in history and still lost! At least Jimmy G lost with Hill playing for the chiefs!

What are y'all looking for? Perfection? It's not about perfection. Even Mahomes wasn't perfect. It's about how to execute well when things go wrong. Purdy is no Jimmy G 2.0. I've seen Purdy take care of the ball way more and make passes that Jimmy couldn't consistently do, and that's that Purdy is doing it in his 2nd overall year/1st full year starting the whole season. I'd say Purdy did much better in this Super Bowl than what Jimmy did in his Super Bowl vs Chiefs.

The 3rd and 4 on the goaline in OT, Jennings was wide open for a walk in TD. But instead the o line decided to not block Chris jones AT ALL and Purdy couldn’t get the ball off. The o line needs to be addressed. Bad.
Yup that's a W if the OL just blocks Chris Jones. But the right guard just let him walk right in to Purdy, nobody even touched him. Can't do that and win big games.

Both played well, but you can’t say they were the better team. Chiefs won.
Everyone says it was unlucky that the ball hit the players foot on the punt. No… it’s called coaching and situational awareness and trying to pick up the ball on the run instead of just falling on the ball. That’s not unlucky, that’s making bad choices.
I don’t think anyone had any real tears. In fact none of the Niners looked that bothered during interviews. It’s almost like none of them actually cares about this loss.
Special teams really shit the bed. That fumble really cost the game.

Not in this case. The play of Mahomes won the game. Both defenses played it even. Also, mistake ridden special teams had more to do with the loss than the defense.
The fucking O-line was an issue all year, and was one of the main issues in this loss. Fix that shit in the offseason!!
Agreed, it was their biggest weakness all year. Mckivitz was worse than McGlinchey, which was unbelievable. Burford was terrible all year, with Feliciano being better but he's not a long term solution at his age. And Brendel is just there, not bad, not good just there.
They thought having Trent Williams would fix things and dude got knocked down multiple times by Pennel who only got called up like 5 games ago from the practice squad. People have been underestimating karlaftis, danna, Bolton, chenal, etc. and Felix taking over for omenihu def came to play. Sneed and mcduffie are freaking lethal which is why they got so few targets
The 49ers special teams blunders and not running enough on offense in the 2nd and 3rd quarters cost them the game. They certainly played well enough to win, but they had too many mistakes. The 49ers gave the Chiefs too many opportunities they took advantage of.

They gave the chiefs bad spots in ot and they called holding on 3rd down in ot Trent mcduffie. Juice didn’t catch that ball in ot either, it didn’t survive the ground. If they really wanted the chiefs to win why tf did everything they did go in the niners favor? They just couldn’t capitalize. Not the chiefs fault the niners scored a field goal instead of a touchdown. To be fair though there was holding on both sides and that was a hold by mcduffie on that play but for the rest of the game I don’t actually care that they let the teams play but it’s just intellectually dishonest to pretend that the chiefs didn’t earn that win because they did. Chiefs have the hardest training camp which helped with endurance so they were able to execute better even though b it h teams were exhausted
The defense had the chance to win the game on their last two drives. They failed. It’s not because the personnel, it was schematics. All season, Wilks was willing to give up basically ten yards every play, in order to prevent a larger play. Essentially, it was a scheme focused on containment. Eventually, it adds up. You don’t give up too many big plays, but you give up the field.
Not on the defense but more on the 49ers offense. The defense was injured and quite frankly tired after playing 60+ minutes of football. The niners were in the redzone twice and could’ve put this game away in regulation. They were realistically 4 yards away from a ring

I'm a Seahawks fan, but I agree. Purdy is the real deal. He has his ups and downs, but he looked poised today. And the entire game kept it neck to neck against Mahomes and a good Chiefs defense. Missed field goal, muffed punt by special teams, rare fumbled ball by CMC. Man, he still played to win.

It was not Wilkes fault. The 49's played well for about 70%of the game. However ,it was the last 30 % that mattered . Andy Reid and Mahomes outplayed you guys in the last 30% of the game.

You 💯 run on both those downs. I’m pretty sure cmc is getting 4 yds on 2 Carries and even if he doesn’t he’s going to get positive yardage so at the worst you’re at 4th and 1 and can go for it to win the game by getting the 1st. Then you kick it as time expires. He’s been terrible since he said no to Tom Brady in 19’ and cost himself at least 2 rings by his ego. Tom isn’t losing that game with the D playing like that. Tom is not gonna come up with 0 points after mahomes pick and 3 an out where you start rd mid field. He stomps on their throat and puts them away like he did at the bucs. The problem is Kyle play calls like he has Tom and purdy was fine but he isn’t Tom. Run the ball

But yeah it was a bad decision, in the biggest plays you have to put the ball in your best players hands so it should’ve been cmc. Chiefs big 4th down play was a rpo that either meant the ball would be in Mahomes or kelce’s hands aka their best players. Andy Reid apparently knows what Shanahan doesn’t.

Our O line was the biggest issue. Every loss this season can be traced to this line getting physically dominated at the line of scrimmage. They just don’t value it which makes no sense. This is what happens when you trade that many first rounders away.

Yeah, it’s time to trade everyone and rebuild. The Pressers were brutal for the 49ers players. No one in that locker room can look at Kyle the same. As constructed this team cannot beat Mahomes and Andy Reid. The Niners need a new OL, DL and DB room. Also Kyle needs to revamp his passing scheme and QB if he is going to abandon the run in every Super Bowl. No shots at Purdy but Kyle will need a top 3 QB to bail out his atrocious play calling.

Mahommes had that killer instinct that separates him from the 49ers QB. Bad defense coverage plays and offense plays from the coach. This was a coach vs coach game and Andy won hands down.
Way different line situation. Chiefs pressure was best in playoffs by far. SF O line is not good besides T. Williams.
I can’t put it all on Ray Ray when Kyle plays the 3 qtr keeping the ball out of 23’s hands. There was ZERO offensive aggression coming out of the half. Totally different offense in the 3rd. Kyle strikes again.

That punt return fumble was everything. Shades of Kyle Williams. Chiefs couldn’t score on us before then. We possibly go up 17-6 there and it’s a different story. Just one of those unfortunate football god bounces and ultimately changed the complexity of the game

It is a bit odd given the Seahawks are division rivals to the 49ers him going and playing for the enemy is odd. I mean this happens in football like any business but he only has one ring and that one ring is with the Seahawks. His best years were with the Seahawks and when he gets inducted into the Hall do fame it should obviously be with the Seahawks.

Richard Sherman could get arrested 32 different times, but he will always be my favorite football player.
I love Ray Ray's passion and effectiveness on Special Teams. He caught a REALLY bad break on a 1% freak incident where the ball deflected off a player's heel. He was in an awkward position to try and land on the ball rather than try and scoop it up, and the cards just didn't fall in his favor.
Just a casual fan, but I did not find watching two good defenses v two good offenses boring.

It’s a team game. The niners had plenty of opportunities to score. It wasn’t the special teams that kept the offense from scoring touchdowns instead of field goals… it was the chiefs defense that did that. Purdy has limits that Mahomes doesn’t have and that was on full display in OT.

Thrilling game. My team wasn't in it but I was rooting for a great game and a little bit for the Chiefs. 49ers put up a heck of a fight and I'm assuming they'll be back strong next year. I'm still fascinated by the Purdy story. Too bad about that punt. It seemed like a freak accident whose damage, like Sherm said, could have been minimized if he just got on top of the ball. Again, what a thrilling game and way to end of the season. Reminded me of why the NFL is my favorite sport / league.

Why do people keep saying blocked fg? It was an extra point and even if he made it there was no guarantee we would win. The chiefs drove down the field and kicked a fg to tie the game. If we were up 4 then they had no choice but to go for it on 4th down and the td that could've ended it before OT. The 2 turnovers and no points and no points really killed us along with the special teams fumble.

Tough choice to make, defense was gassed and it was obvious since late in the 4th. Going man is quite daring. That is also why I felt like the only really bad coaching point/error you can point to was the 7 man blitz against Mahomes in OT. To force a gassed defense to cover 1 on 1 was way too risky and could have ended the game on that play; but it ultimately gave Kansas city the first down.
The defensive play calling in ot was garbage
Your calling blitzes with guys standing back 2 yards beyond the first down marker giving them 10yards of grass. Playing what looked like a vanilla defense. The game was tied going into OT so it’s was ZERO-ZERO!!!! at that point!

CMC’s fumble early really hurt as the Niners offense was dealing up until that point.
The o line, especially the right side sucks and whiffed on blocks all night. The defense played great for 3 quarters and the offense couldn’t cash in off KC turnovers. Brown’s INT gave the Niners the ball on the KC 45 and they got no points out of it.
The offense had three straight 3 and outs in the 3rd quarter and did nothing but go backwards the entire quarter.
Special teams also cost the Niners. The Chiefs made more plays and deserved to win. Greenlaw tore his Achilles running onto the field WTF. As a lifelong Niner fan this one hurts. I think this franchise is cursed.

It felt like San Fran outplayed them all game, but they always say 3 to 5 plays define the outcome of the game. The CMC opening drive fumble, Dre Greenlaw blowing his achilles, the punt hitting #28s foot, and the multiple pressures in Purdy face on possible TD throws were the difference. KC got all of the game shifting plays, man. Its heartbreaking because it just felt like San Fran was the better team all game. Devastating.
One of the better comments on here. Nailed all the differences. Kittle/Deebo doing very little didn't help....the All-Pros needed to be All Pro & they all weren't.

Greenlaw getting hurt was so big because the Chiefs adjusted at halftime and got Kelce the ball more in his absence. 49ers needed to have a plan to adjust and get the All-Pros involved more efficiently. Then Kittle/Deebo/Aiyuk would have needed to make the plays. KC defense and Spags are one of the best units in the league.
All the niners really needed was 3 td scores to win this game thats all in regulation. But they kept shooting themselves in the foot. I am not even looking at muffed punt, or fumble previously. Mainly the entire 3rd quarter on offense lost them the game. Pat mahommee int they didnt do anything with ect....
The fumble by Pacheco wasn't as costly because they were in the red zone, and it didn't cost the Chiefs points. But the special teams blunder by the Niners give away points. Some mistakes are more costlier than others. Jake Moody was clutch long distance, the point blank extra point? Purdy played well but not well enough.
Relying on Purdy to be the difference maker for the 2nd game in a row is a big ask. Dude is not Mahomes. Everyone has been saying he’s like the 10th best player on their team and that’s what he played like. Deebo and Kittle and aiyuk were like nonexistent and Trent Williams had some mess ups. Bosa is a good physical talent but dumb as a rock, how many times did he fall for Mahomes fakes 😂
How can sherm not mention that perfect corner back play from Mcduffie in that game? Dude put on a clinic from perfect coverage to blitzing off the edge. And he didn’t miss one tackle. Had Deebo one on one all game. 😮💨😮💨
