I enjoy your approach to bushcraft. It's practical and down to earth. So much on UA-cam is all about flashy and novelty. They demonstrate methods for doing things that most of us can't think of a reason we would actually ever need to do it.
Also, about the Abenaki making syrup, I was told by my syrup producing ancestors from Vermont that before the Indians had fire proof cooking vessels, they boiled the syrup by dropping heated rocks into the sap.

Thank you very much. Yes the only method I've heard of them using (before metal pots) was hot rocks. If that was it, then the amount of work boggles the mind. I know they did cook stew that way.

Doug, how cool is it to have been raised and taught survival skills from birth. Our ancestors had a really hard way of life, but it made them really strong and resilient. My Dad was born in 1926. He said today, people have several rooms and a bath, he said we had 6 rooms and a PATH, LOL. Since they had an outhouse, he said when it was cold and you would sit down, it was so cold, you’d forget what you came for, lol. The fires went out at night, and the pee pot would freeze. People condemned people for hunting but when you’re starving, your mind and body will do whatever it takes stay alive. I am so impressed with the native Americans and how they lived off the land, but in total harmony with the land. My heart breaks for those people. When I was a child, I loved Indians and wanted to be one. Thanks for sharing your family story. Maybe you can share some stories with us around the campfire?

Thank you so much for this awesome remembrance of a past that was hard but just a way of living, but the TRUTH that is always with us and how He shares every day with us. Guiding our foot steps through the struggles and JOYS. There is a great security when we know who loves more than we can ever imagine. I appreciate how you showed the connection with Our Lord whether it is the difficult or a time of great joy. We can see it in our surroundings, His Creation and the faces of those who know Him. Thank you!

I have a cottage on Sebago Lake, Standish, Maine. I can see Mt. Washington on a clear day. It was built in 1935. . Cottage was my late parents' cottage. My parents have been gone a long time now. I am 72 years old.
We called it "Living off the Land" in the 1960's. April 26th, 2024.

Pastor Doug, you did an incredible job in putting this together! Thanks for your investment of time, energy, & all the sacrifices you made to produce this. Being a generation older than you, I also have many meaningful memories of time spent with great grandparents & their simple off-grid way of life before electricity & running water were available. This video took me on a trip down Memory Lane & many of my memories/experiences parrallel those illustrated in this presentation. Unfortunately, I do not have the technological skills of the video equuipment of today's younger gerations. What many modern folks call "survival skills" were everyday knowledge & skills for older generations of our families whom we honor. In separate communication I hope to share MORE of my experiences & memories with you. However, my wife & I are getting ready for our great granddaughter's wedding this week-end; I will be churchciating at her wedding .. I wish you & your family, your church, & all your viewers a VERY BLESSED EASTER! Pastor George

Thank you. that's exactly what I meant- what many call survival skills today was everyday knowledge among rural folks back then. I look forward to your private message. Happy Easter! God bless!

Sounds like my gradparents place my mother grew up in in 1920s.
Tin bath on wall, everyone shared it. No electric light these were candles or oil lamps. No running water, in the house outside toilet in winter need to take hotwater with you to unfreze water and it was cold.
Heating was either boiler or home fires that you cooked on, coal or wood fired.

i"m 71. From age 5-10, I lived in a place with a privy, No running water the first year or so, Dad finally got around to hooking up the cistern to the bath tub and sink,, but I had to pump drinking and cooking water. Mom put up veggies in mason jars all the way to 1990.

Thank you for sharing your personal experience. I appreciate it because I've had people not believe what I tell them. But Americans did live that way. My Mom canned food into the 1980s. I forget if she did any canning in the '90s.
