"Before You Watch" is my UA-cam series where I talk about a show with limited spoilers. That way, people who aren't sure about watching it or not can get an idea about what they're getting into beforehand.

I love this show so much! I remember getting back from japan and watching the second season and being like "WOW i recognize that!! I was just there!!" and that first ending song manages to make me cry more often then not it's just so fitting and aaaaa I love this show it's so nice to see you talking about it!!

I'm an older viewer and this is my favourite anime. I don't watch many other anime. It's particularly good if you consider it a philosophical tale, where each faction (tengu, tanuki & human) are metaphors for different aspects of the human spirit. Humans are cruel/kind/unpredictable, tengu are prideful/powerful/conceited, and tanuki are humble/playful/doomed - aspects which are ultimately all human, but split among factions in the world of this anime. Which means each faction tells a tale of what it is like to be alive, from a different angle.
Beyond that, you have the crossover characters who are tormented by trying to be what they're not - like Benten, a human who wants to wield the power of a tengu but not be tormented by human sentimentality, or Soun Ebisugawa who wants to be among humans to wield human cruelty as a weapon, but doesn't want to deal with the vulnerability of being a tanuki. Akadama sensei who, having lost his abilities as a tengu, still retains all their haughty arrogance, yet also retains his sympathy for the vulnerable tanuki - or yasaburou, who crosses all worlds... I think these characters (and more unmentioned, esp yajiro who's my favourite) are all just metaphors for what it's like to be human.
It's adapted from books by Morimi Tomihiko who I'm currently reading. I noticed similar themes (ie. the human inevitability of loss) in the anime adaptation of Penguin Highway, which uses another Morimi book a source. Check it out if you haven't.
