    We should have known something was in the mix when Portnoy played drums for Pettrucci's recent solo tour. It didn't register to me, at the time, something might be brewing underneath the radar, but it makes sense, now. I look forward to his return and what they put out. It hurt when he left, and I never truly got over that. But his return feels right. I'd just like to thank Mangini for his time in the band and how much his expertise helped them. I can think of no other replacement that would work, honestly. Here's to another 40 years of DT!

    I'm very happy with Mike Portnoy's return and curious to know what the future 16 studio album will be like after almost 14 years since Black Clouds & Silver Linings. I discovered Dream Theater thanks to the song The Root of All Evil by Octavarium and until that point I had never heard drums as technical as that (at the time I didn't know that Dream Theater had changed drummers, obviously). When I looked for the most recent album I came across the album Distance Over Time. And, although the drums sound quite "strange" and different, compared to what I heard in the other song, I learned to like it. Later I discovered that the band had changed drummers and that there were a lot of people who didn't like Portnoy's departure, but I didn't mind too much, since I liked both styles of drumming. Thank you Mike Mangini for all 5 albums you released with Dream Theater, I'm going to miss you, but I'll be able to miss Portnoy!!

    Mike Portnoy is awesome and this is good. Mike Mangini though broke the walls for me. When i saw him play his top rack crash cymbol from the bottom to change the mic dynamics my mind was blown for at least 12 seconds trying to put into context what i had seen. Im sure others have done many tricks like this but i hadn't see it done in real time. I personally would have kept both drummers and made DT a powerhouse!! Thats just me though lol

    Mangini did an amazing job, and his skills (besides being a nice bloke) obviously suited DT really well, but I've always felt the band to be missing something - perhaps mostly chemistry between them, and missing thát tandem Myung / Portnoy that formed the incredibly versatile and important rhythm section behind all the sheer musicality in DT...
    I'm mostly happy for John Myung!

    Kinda feel sorry for Mangini. From what I understand, he gets fired because Mike Portnoy wants to return to band. I understand the value of Portnoy and love DT albums made with him (not that I dislike the newer ones, made with Mangini), but firing a dude that has left his well-paid job to be in your band just because you now have someone "better" to me feels like a betrayal to an extent.

      Especially when Mangini did so unbelievably well in DT, he had an amazing style and honestly I might now prefer him slightly over Portnoy.
      Yeah of course Portnoy did more for writing the songs than Mangini did, but man I really don't want too many boring rock beats in this next album.

    • @mr.sidecomments9278
      @mr.sidecomments9278 7 місяців тому

      You're definitely wrong for thinking that Mangini was fired just because Portnoy said he wanted to come back. It was already known years prior that Mike P had always been willing to rejoin his former mates had they offered but also said that he just doesn't see it happening since the door that leads back has been closed by the rest of the guys. There has to be something that went down for the other 4 members to finally open that door.

    • @ScottyR66
      @ScottyR66 7 місяців тому +1

      I don't think this because he "wants" to come back to the band. There's has to be an underlying reason for the change. Who knows, maybe Mangini wants to go back to teaching. We'll never know. Mangini knows he was a hired gun.

  • @manifestgtr
    @manifestgtr 7 місяців тому +1

    Let’s be 100% honest…this is the most exciting development with DT for at least 15 years. When the astonishing was first announced, that was like “oh damn…they’re gonna do another scenes from a memory, six degrees type thing…hell yeah”. But this is a whole new level, really. What I’m most realistically hoping for is a wave of inspiration that leads to at least one more classic, “top five” caliber album.
    What’s also gonna be interesting is to see how Portnoy adapts to their new performing MO. He left well before they ever got into live click tracks, recorded backing vocals and live pro tools sessions. What’s that whole transition gonna be like, I wonder. Lots of interesting aspects to this whole thing…

    • @eggzonerevolution
      @eggzonerevolution 7 місяців тому

      Agree with this! It’ll be interesting. I miss the set lists constantly changing, even two nights in a row. Mike would get bored with the same set list for an entire tour. Those days are likely long gone for the reasons you mentioned (bigger production and pre-set video backdrops, modern method of live performances etc). But what i’m most excited for is the songwriting/collaboration being back to the roots. I still miss Kevin Moore on keys, but I’ve gotten over that loss by now. Ha

  • @Masterlessmusic
    @Masterlessmusic 7 місяців тому

    Gotta be honest, stoked as I am, I'm not surprised. I always thought he'd return. Once he started playing with Petrucci again in his solo record and then with him and Rudess on LTE3, I had a feeling he was getting the DT fuel back in his veins.
    He just needed a nice long break from the machine that is DT. After all, in that band he's a lot more than just the drummer which is a big enough job as it is.
    Thing is, he's the main mind behind the stage production, set lists and obviously co-producer in the studio as well. That's just the stuff I know about.
    There's probably more. Also prog bands can and do often,have members coming and going. They enjoy the diversity in creativity. DT is almost a bit unusual in how much they've all stood firm in the lineup since they got Jordan.

  • @wurm90125
    @wurm90125 7 місяців тому +2

    Hell yeah 🤘🏼. Welcome back Mike. Portnoy is one of the best drummers and Dream Theater is one of the best bands in the world. Dream Theater is so much better when Portnoy is a part of them.

    Great news. Mangini is a great drum instructor but sometimes it feels like he lacks creativity. None the less massive respect for Mangini. Wish him a great future.

    I'm stoked about this, but at the same time I feel guilty for it, because I don't want to feel happy Mangini is gone because he's great in Dream Theater as well.
    But I never felt like this was impossible, it seemed inevitable to me actually.

    Mike Mangini is a top notch drummer, very good drummer but its always been Portnoy's gig. I hope Mangini finds another gig as the next band who gets him will see a massive boost in their music quality!

    Look, I just heard about Mike Mangini... First I have to say, Mangini is a God damn good drummer. There's nothing bad about him. I went back to listen everything he had done in the last 13 years. Then I compared to Portnoy's stuff. So, yeah... I can see what's missing from the original DT era. I think I know why DT want Portnoy back. Like I said, there's nothing wrong about Mangini. It's probably more about a style-drumming-thing. To me, it seems like he's always on "safe" mode when he records. Lol. He needs to get that Portnoy-drumming-sound so we can enjoy...but we don't really hear it. Lol. Anyway, this is my 2 cents. 🤐 Peace. Portnoy, welcome coming back to DT again. Hahaha. We're looking forward to hear those hard/double kicks what we've loved.

    Portnoy has had a signifiant role in producing their music, not just being the drummer. He helped produce John Petrucci's solo album and he's been a significant force in his various projects. Mike Mangini has had limited input into the direction of new songs, the reason I think is John Petrucci and Jordan Rudess took a tighter hold of the reigns once Portnoy left.

    Okay, could you hear me out on this theory? This reunion is doomed to failure. Why is that? What really changed for Portnoy in the last 13 years? Has the ban stopped the record/tour cycle for the five years he wanted? He formed Adrenaline Mob with Russell Allen, the greatest singer in rock, and he left. He formed Sons of Apollo with a former bandmate that he fired and a great singer in JSS, and he just screwed them. Winery Dogs? Same thing. It's a fair bet that Transatlantic is no more, too.
    Mike is the husband who steps out on his wife and leaves his family. Now, he wants to come back and try again. The band is the abused spouse that had finally gotten their life together with a great new husband, but when their abusive husband comes crawling back, they give him a 30th chance because "This time will be different."
    Mike Mangini is a class act and a fantastic drummer who deserved better.

    Personally, I think that the musical writing and preformance with Mike Mangini is better than when Portnoy was in the group. Maybe, with the difference in time since Portnoy originally left and now will prove me wrong, but I am saddened to see Mangini leave.
