I mean, a significant chunk of the Government's ministers and their party's MPs are all Māori. The National Party has a couple and used to have a few more before they retired. In fact, the previous Speaker was a Māori member of the National Party. Māori people actually receive proportionally more representation in Parliament than white people, because a number of seats are reserved for Māori in order to guarantee proportional representation, but most other parties still include a number of Māori among their regular ranks. In fact, while the National Party has had a longstanding policy of opposing those reserved seats and seeking their abolition (because for some time now they've been no longer necessary to actually guarantee proportional representation of Māori), the current leader, Judith Collins, actually reversed this policy and declared that they would be looking to stand candidates for those reserved Māori seats. She stated that the Party couldn't expect Māori to take them seriously if they didn't stand candidates for the seats that, while ultimately unnecessary with respect to their original purpose, have nevertheless come to symbolise Māori representation and inclusivity within Parliament. Also, as a cynical aside, the indigenous status of Māori _was_ actually taken away from them for decades by a massive miseducation campaign that characterised the Moriori people of the Chatham Islands as the original inhabitants of New Zealand before they were colonised and driven off by Māori colonisers. This false narrative was so widespread that many people today, including many Māori, still believe it and have no idea that it was merely a story concocted to justify the marginalisation of Māori by stripping them of their indigeneity. In reality, the Moriori were merely a tribe of Māori who, under a pacifist leader, fled the constant warring of traditional Māori society and took up residence in the Chatham Islands. But if you asked people on the street, many Pākeha and Māori alike would tell you that the Moriori where the original inhabitants of NZ before the Māori arrived to cook and eat them. Ironically, Māori did actually slaughter and eat the Moriori, but not until a bunch of tribes were displaced by colonialism whereupon they sailed over to the Chatham Islands in search of new land and genocidally conquered the Moriori, nearly exterminating them-something the Crown has just apologised for instigating.

@Marilyn Monroe Yes, health outcomes are worse, but Maori are also heavily over-represented amongst smokers, the obese, and the poor. 3 factors that would give poor outcomes for any group in any area of society, and we see exactly those same outcomes for Maori in education an criminal justice. To then say that this is because all these systems are racist or broken is being condescending and paternalistic. Taking away people's accountability is not a solution
@Marilyn Monroe That's true. Maori were expected to adapt to a completely new civilisation, where all the new comers had had a 3000 year head start, and they had to do this in mere decades, that's a huge handicap

@@Maj_Kasul yeah it would have been good to have seen the entire thing. Even NZ tv didn't show how it all started.
Let the National Party continue to have these views and attitude. It just means that they will be continously sidelined by voters. Rather than take lessons from what Jacinda Ardern is doing (as the rest of the world are starting to do), they continue this weird supremacist stance, like their kin across the world.
I disagree. They must not be let alone, white supremacy must be fought against, from social media posts to protests to the government organizations.
No friend. Unfortunately the National party has been winning majority votes. Arden gained power by forming a majority coalition, not by winning most of the votes (the National party did). Arden skirted her party’s loss by aligning with fringe parties to get to the majority threshold.
Her move has been heavily criticized for subverting the will of the people.
@@alh9569 Ha..read todays NZ media. National's divisive racist attitude towards Maori Wards has backfired...Crusher Collins ratings have tanked.
@@alh9569 so I guess the last election didn't count then when she won 65 seats. Must've been stolen with dodgy machines, dead people voting in the millions or perhaps the count should've stopped whilst the National Party was ahead lol.
BTW I'm from the UK, and the NZ PM is extremely popular here. Even the right wing press love her. She knows what she's doing.
@@akinokusami3623 As a New Zealander, I will say she isn't perfect she isn't doing us well with China.
Everything in his video is awesome but his co-leader adding some moves in the end of the Haka, supporting him and keeping her challenging face is the BEST moment!
Love this so much. As a minority I completely support his “defiance” Well done! ✊🏾🖤

It is alive and well. Sad that people still haven’t learnt from the ills of the past.

Wow. Sounds like NZ is having the same problem as we all are across the world. Here in Australia we have these loonies that think the same as the National party in NZ. Providing for our indigenous peoples should be the # 1 priority and having bad health outcomes is just not acceptable in 2021. Hats of to you Sir for your stances on this and same to his fellow colleague who walked off with him. Also to Jacinda whom is a fabulous representation of women in governance.

Wow. The tone deafness that the opposition party is NOT native and yet it has issue WITH Natives. The utter gall.
Amen! Keep preaching, your voice is being heard!!
I love that for once theres a prime ministe who boldly stands up for oppressed indigenous peoples. Speaks out freely in parliment about it.
She’s committed political suicide within the last year or so, I think deep down she cares but helping the “Maori” people out might secure their votes next election
I say this to everyone who isn’t a New Zealand or doesn’t live here.. it’s hard to understand how bad of a pm she is until you have to live everyday suffering her mistakes 🤦♀️
So proud of the Maori people! Stay strong!
You can turn off a microphone, but the voice behind it cannot be so easily. Especially if that voice is one of Power nd Reason. Immense respect for the gentleman who stood up for his people.
Supporting our Māori brothers and sisters in our common struggles with white supremacy and indigenous equality and recognition.
Hats off to this brave fighter.
Indigenous people from North & South America, Australia, New Zealand, Taiwan, etc... deserve respect, protection & more support than those Karen's who claim themselves to be owners of the land. I'm sick of this bs "democracy" talk from those who show respect to nobody but themselves. Those who shout "democracy" loudest could be the most unfair and full of bs.
My cousin told me that someone told her to "stop speaking Asian, speak American" at a Starbuck's before. She told me that she responded by saying "You are not native either so shut %#$%#@%# up"
I'm not quite certain what the Starbucks drama paragraph had in connection with KARENS democracy paragraph preceding it. But, pertinent question "whom was the American requesting an aurally comprehended linguistic in relation to their visage?. e.g American Samoan?, Mexican?, Melanin proficient American, Melanin deficient American, or just as likely Asian American. Never tell half a story, becomes open to interpretation.
Funny how the oppressor will literally tell on themselves by stating the same facts in a rose tent but once that fact is without filter they treat it as a fairytale
If that ain't a word...
Respect. That's it. That's all I have for that man. Is respect my Brother. We are with you!
Isn't this the same guy they wouldn't sit because of his tie? Seems some members have a lot of time on their hands to worry about this stuff.
Gotta love Ngarewa-Packers mic drop at the end. Like, total solidarity. Just an absolute "we said what we needed to say," and just taking it all like a champ. I wont pretend to know the names and symbolism of all the gestures and dances that exist. But the energy is palpable. And im here for it
I love her the NZ PM is a compassionate human with nary a corporate overlord in her luggage
The disrespect and condescension on that man’s (Trevor I think) face.
how can they stay there wearing lei while kicking out one of the few people there who can really speak on the struggles of Indigenous People in their country. Indigenous People's right to self determination should be respected and upheld.
Haka is a sacred and beautiful tradition of the amazing Maori indigenous culture, that should be respected, embraced and these folks should be HEARD in every way! I stand with the Maori people and their pursuit of equal rights! NZ government is as appalling as is our broken America and it's time for MAJOR CHANGE
May infinite intelligence bless us all
That chick afterwards was like “Thats right!”
The woman with the chin tattoo is absolutely stunning.
i love that improving health outcomes is equivalent to separatism!! like wtf!! they don't want anyone to have anything unless it is for themselves, and only for them.
This just breaks my heart. Kia kaha, Aotearoa. 💕 🇳🇿
Imagine the original inhabitants of that country are now being maligned and disparaged by people who themselves are foreigners to begin with.
Maori arrived 700 years ago, Europeans 400 years ago, we are all immigrants
@@overover.. Right. But still they were the first ones to inhabit the place.
Yes, they were. For the record no is being maligned and disparaged. People are only wishing to discuss whether splitting governance by race is the best direction for the country. Those who ask that question get shouted down with a haka and called racist
Rawiri Waititi, Debbie Ngarewa-Packer and Jacinda Ardern and others leading by example on the world stage
The world could learn alot from New Zealand 🇳🇿
New Zealand DO NOT NEED THE CROWN
Please don’t let NZ fall into the same mess as the rest of most governments.
Lmao thinking that turning off a microphone would keep the Maori people quiet know little about the people as a whole. They are warriors and are not about to be silenced by something as trivial as a microphone. When they have something to say they will say it and you will listen and hear them. 💪
If inequality exists then it’s not democracy. Close the gap and inequality first then talk about democracy
