What I very much like about HIGNFY and satire overall, is that it let's me know that others feel that way about things and the said feeling is shared with many.
1:09:25 Americans are more interested in visual clowning/slapstick than satire which occurs mostly in your head and requires a minimum information level about the subject being satirised. I think John Cleese has made this point.
I think the minimum information level really is the key. The US is so big that a political scandal or news event of less than the absolute most importance can go basically unnoticed by not just one person, but everyone that person knows as well. If none of your friends know or care about a particular story happening two or three time zones away, are you really going to be sharing satire about it?
I'm sat on Christmas day with a glass of port laughing away. and if anyone is thinking "port posh twat" I'm a miner from the northeast so kiss it lol🤣🤣
Sorry I missed this exhibition. Of course I’m in Montreal and there’s a bit of water in the way… But I will visit the Library next time I’m in London. I’m fascinated by the subject of satire. Years back I saw a very interesting exhibition in Paris on the history of Le Canard Enchaîné, France’s equivalent to Private Eye. Let’s hope there’ll be an exhibition about the Eye again soon. I greatly admire Ian Hislop. Even more so because he’s a train nut like me too. Greetings from Canada! 🍁
Shazia Mirza hosting right? who's Andy ?? no mention of Shazia in the video description either. did she anger someone at the British Library. seems a glaring oversight or snub. no it's Shazia to the rescue !! didn't Everyone Get the ''wear green'' memo? ?? I have my camo loungers on
Despite being an American, I am constantly asking myself why we have no sense of humor. I think it stems from taking ourselves too seriously - or simply seriously. SNL is really more slapstick than satire. Carlin was great, but his delivery could be a problem. Smothers Brothers: we know what happened to them. I think this was a good talk, if a bit uneven. Cannot tell if calling Zelensky the most admired leader was being satirical … I hope so. Thank you.
While this is a year old comment, since nobody has replied... I think it is largely down to the nature of US society as a largely immigrant population, with varying levels of English. England was extremely homogenous up until the 60s, and though it is much more multicultural nowadays, there is still a core britishness and the vast majority have a native level of English which lends itself to more complex humour. Of course, there is plenty of intelligent US humour and british toilet-humour. One of the most popular shows in the UK is Mrs. Brown's Boys, which is absolutely abysmal stage Oirish (I'm Irish , by the way). Also, popular comedy in Spain, Italy and Germany is absolutely juvenile crap for the most part. I can't speak for the comedy in other countries than those.
Eh like yeh you can take it to far and if you are doing it simply to keep up appearances pleas don't, but earnestly being sympathetic enough to truly be angry on someone else's behalf is not a bad thing. For example I am angry that the US doesn't have a universal healthcare system when it would cost less and get better result, now that is more an economic rather than soical concern, but it doesn't actually effect me, but to think that 300 million people are suffering to benefit a very few when it has been shown time after time that a univeral healthcare system can be cost effective and generally just effective doesn't really make me angry as much as it just annoys me. To be fair though the thing I think you are criticizing most is people getting offended by jokes, which I like to believe I have a tolerance as wide as the ocean for as long as it's not intended to be hurtful or malicious. Love South Park for example because they take the piss out of everyone, nobody is singled out and being able to laugh at yourself or even just laugh at the caricature of yourself while everyone else is getting ripped on is a virtue.
This is one of the worst single videos I have come across. The description is just wrong, bordering on SEO deception, the title is wrong, the host is awful, like, near disrespectfully awful, and the audio is poor. (although no shade on the engineer).
these are very good panellists, but they are bit of 'the old guard' who have views of American satire from maybe how it was over 10 years ago, also seemed to be a older generation in the audience too, who perhaps don't watch the American late night shows or recognise that a lot of people in Britain watch American comedy, that guy talking about the American office doesn't have a clue how it's loved here, and there was no mention of things like Seth Meyers Closer Look, the success of John Oliver over there, Jon Stewart etc, finished now, but VEEP did well too, they really don't hold back, they aren't tame towards the American government and companies. There is actually more topical comedy shows in America than there is here in the UK, and most air 4 episodes a week, year round (usually a 3 weeks one, 1 off schedule) we get what 20 episodes of Have I got News for you a year, that is now the ONLY pure topical comedy show on a main channel. (an argument could be made to include The Last Leg too, but even that only aired about 20 episodes too ) some more stuff on radio, but still not huge numbers. We simply don't do enough to be feeling high and mighty towards the Americans, when since this happened, topical shows got pulled when The Queen died, out of respect... I don't want my satirists to respectful of the powerful, they get a pass to make the points and jokes, during the nations mass hysteria, I got the best satire about it all from American late night shows. Ian Hislop should have been embarrassed his show got pulled, not just from airing when it was scheduled, but from even being made!
I just find Mirza grates, all her "jokes" are just a political axe to grind, she's just boring and tedious after the first two "jokes". Comedians should be able to be funny about a range of subjects, she's like Ranganathan, stuck on the same dull topic and the same racist crap about "white people".
TV should have more diversity & outlet of different views, but i would still think that all TV shows live & die, ultimately, by their viewing figures. Obviously comedy is subjective, but i didnt find The Mash Report very funny, nor do i find Nish Kumar funny. I guess this is a problem (modern??) whereby shows that may have smaller viewing figures but are really enjoyed by that fanbase, dont get the chance to continue due to the fact that viewing figures may not be big enough. Was this different in the past with fewer channels where TV shows were given more of a chance because of the audiences lack of choice. In regards to this video, it unfortunately felt very stilted, with no one except Ian & Jan seemingly willing to contribute to the discussion. The first drawing of the tractor was just painful with no one saying anything.
@@StuartMiles74 a brilliant artist? Where? Regardless, she’s a cartoonist, she’s meant to be drawing humorous images. She isn’t. She’s drawing shit images of non jokes.
Brilliant. More of this please!
I keep misreading the headline as an evening with Sartre
Ian Hislop is genuine and genius all in one
Brilliant, cheers for sharing.
Thanks so much for posting.
Jan Ravens' matching eyes and t-shirt are quite mesmerising
Great show but so annoying that someone couldn't get the overhead viewer properly on screen for viewers.
Wonder how different the conversation would have been with Zaltzman? Ian,s take downs are brilliant. Lifts the whole show
What a joy to listen to intelligent people. It makes a change.

47:10 Ian confounding people with facts as is his way :) resulted in stunned silence,
1:25:03 Ian "His performance has been faultless" high praise indeed given I've never heard Ian say that of any pollies native to UK.

Print and cartoons are online.
South Park, excellent US satire.

34:05 Permission to use allegedly racist terms is not conditional on who says it. Giving oneself permission to use a racists term is hypocritical.
Dictators always have to bring down reporters, cartoonists, and scientists. Then come the educators and books.
1:23:51 Brilliant question ... especially having watched "Servant of the People" staring Zilenski
Thank you for mentioning George Carlin, he was brilliant.
Absolutely!

Great video shame the sound was so poor.
31:36 Nick Park did Spitting Image with Robert Maxwell - fascinating connection.
47:09 Her 'no comment' dig at Ian show how much she doesn't like him. Why the @#$%^ should he have to comment?!?!
Looking forward to her satirical impersonations of Diane Abbott and Emily Thornberry 😂
Helen Lewis would have been a better interviewer match for the panel members
52:40 Hopefully The British Library is better with books that it is with microphones.
Cripes Martin, perhaps you should get a refund for what you paid.
Why are there 2 people on stage who are not satirists on "An evening of Satire" ?
1:06:58 Agree with Jan. SNL is nothing compared to UK satire. SNL says the obvious with a caricature voice.
With the wealthy and politicians, main weakness is usually ego. Strength for men, image for women.
Fry, I think, said 'US makes fun of others; UK makes fun of itself.

Cartoonists know the symbols to use because of what journalists find out besides what we all see and hear.
How come we haven't heard anything from the legend Ian hislop 😍 about bojo resigning
i'm sure it will be mentioned in private eye
It's in private eye
The problem with satire is that is can develop a sense of an enhanced intellect
No satire on US TV? John Oliver? Trevor Noah? Stephen Colbert?
South Park!
Samantha Bee?😊
John Oliver is an imperialist stooge and is not even funny.
Seth Myers?
The US is far more litigious and touchy these days than the UK. That's why we have no biting satire.
Eh like yeh you can take it to far and if you are doing it simply to keep up appearances pleas don't, but earnestly being sympathetic enough to truly be angry on someone else's behalf is not a bad thing. I think you illustrate her point.
Fed up with audience applause!
1:26:35 She hardly responds non-verbally to anything he says.
1:08:51 "I'm going to lose my job, my wife and my parking space" ... worth the trip to USA to get that.
cant hear what they are saying. Pity.
title of video should be "An Evening on Satire" since there isn't any satire in the video

19:07 At this point she seems to disengage from Ian :(
Perhaps the line is crossed into prohibited satire were one to respond to anti-white racist quips?

Agree. She doesn't 'get' Ian and he's one of a very small number of my heroes.
Started watching. Awful. Switched off. I was looking forward to hearing from Ian.

Ask her how many white tv hosts there are in india
How awkwardly British.
I longed for ridicule to happen to Trump, but... Was he The Mule?
But lots of women do stage satire. Talk some into doing letters and cartoons.
I stopped at the cartoonist. Same joke over and over. Male politican, male political with legs spread. Over and over.
Get over it yer wuss.
You can’t say anything these days… 🙄
The cartoonist might be the least talented least funny person who has ever been on a stage. I am bewildered.
Really? I mean REALLY?? Wow.
@@graemem111 yeh it’s crazy how she’s allowed to be up there right?

Pretty good... apart from the pointless discussion around 'diversity'
Not very diverse or inclusive, terrible.
Awful chairwoman - not funny at all.
Is this a satire on satire shows ? The irony of the show having zero humour until the white guy started mansplaining...
Are we still pretending covid is a thing? 😂
Gave it two minutes but after the initial poor joke about Trump and then another about Brexit..I knew I was in for a Leftie love-in and left.
