I bet its the motor mounts and any dampening associated. Its just amplified through the firewall, think like the skin of a drum. When enough torque the engine pulls tight and sound diminishes, between that you get vibration that translates to your "moan" sound. Or something like that, harmonic balancer?

That’s the sign of having a good mechanic when they know their limits of what they can do and knows when to throw in the towel. A lot of mechanics would be happy to keep tearing the car apart looking over everything all while billing you the entire time and most likely still wouldn’t find the noise. Respect to Wizard for being a great mechanic and for treating his customers fair. I just wish there were more mechanics like him.

I love how in every one of these videos about the Countach, there are at least a dozen wildly different "solutions" to the moan. I'm sure one of them is right. But the Wizard would be able to afford all of Kansas by the time he goes through each and every option he hasn't already tried.

  • @patmcrotch8420

Your "moan" could be in the cooling system as a result of an edie current within the passages at a specific RPM. I've know some dirt track cars with a secondary radiator in the passenger compartment to develop a "hum" while at certain engine speeds. It's probably a flow resonance issue, it depends on how annoying it is to you to want it gone or not.

@carwizard, the sound could be an interference frequency from a sheetmetal part. If the engine is operating at a certain rpm and a chassispart has it’s own frequency in the same range it could start vibrating. I have had this experience in my past with steel contructions as well. For example when operating a vibratory screen at 16 Hz we have to take care at designing sheetmetal panels too big. I have seen supportbeams moving 1/2” just by this sound. I have seen a complete building working as a bass.
The way to solve this is changing the dimension of the beams or panels. Shortening length or adding braces will change the natural to a higher Hz. Basically getting this natural frequency of the construction out of the frequency range of the engine and drivetrain. You could also add sound dampening material to the sheetmetal in that area. This adds mass resulting an change of frequency.

@@weedfreer just hearing the noise sounds like something that is vibrating at an extremely high frequency. That makes me think about the components on a car that vibrate. Then components that vibrate and are attached to engine RPM. Then components that vibrate, attached to RPM, and are near the fire wall leads me to this as a guess.
Couple that along with the conditions that the noise starts. Hoovie didn’t notice it until it started to warmup outside, and he (I’m assuming) started using the AC again. These are old Italian cars and little components like a TXV that aren’t used and lubricated often can start sticking and make this type of noise.

The fact it happens in a certain rpm range could mean that it's a vibration of something that has a certain resonant frequency. You want to look for any flat sheets of metal or pipe etc. in the area that are in the area the noise is coming from and make sure they are not loose, I'd do the same with any bolted connection too just to be safe.

HOOVIE PLEASE READ! I know this is a car but I had this experience on a natural gas pipeline transmission engine. I spent 6 months trying to diagnose the gear box/noise and it was what they call a “soft foot”. Since the foundation was cracked, it allowed for the gearbox to obtain a harmonic. This is what caused the humming noise. Gears were good and I aligned them but since the foundation was “soft” it would allow a frequency to pass causing a resonance. We had to fix the foundation, cad no issues afterwards. Now my point, check all of the bushings, which I am sure you have but think about changing bushing materials at the mounts (including exhaust and transmission). If you already have, tell the Wizard to by a potentiometer to measure the vibration at various spots. If it is caused by a mount you can see if it is a function of the RPM (I.e., the frequency will match the RPM frequency). If it is, then it is a mount somewhere. If not, likely some type of vacuum or seal leak. Message me if you like but this has been a subject that I have investigated a few times.

Timing belt/chain harmonics under load, that's where I would look
Try disconnecting injector and see if it moves the harmonic at rpm range.
It could be a gear droning in the front cover as well, possibly oil pump.
I have seen oil pressure regulators make a Humm when they are producing slightly more overpressure than regulator/bypass valve is opening, then you get a continuous series of cliicks that makes a Humm.
Replace engine oil to change viscosity and see if it moves the drone range.
Try an oil thickener like Lucas, if it doesn't effect anything, your only out oil.
Injector disconnect may give you a code or 5 but only out a computer reset.

Not sure if this car has the "option" for the all-wheel drive, it could be an issue with the output shaft. I would put the engine on the lift and see if it has any play on the shaft or any support that could not be tight enough. Can be the stiffness in the drivetrain that has changed because of this.

You have a leaking air pipe/evap pipe near the firewall run a smoke test on the intake side and see if you get smoke. With age the rubber pipes wear out and get leaky and sounds like crap then could be a cheap fix. It wont throw codes for something like that because the diablo ECU was not that advance back in the day to pick up a minor intake leak. Incase that does not work there are few other major diablo issues which cause issues intake manifold seal/gasket. Trans fluid worn due to age will cause a low hum in the trans.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE DO NOT SELL the Diablo and Countach. Sell the Murcielago. The other two are classics and you will regret selling them

Not many people could carry off owning all these iconic cars without coming across as a four-letter word. Hoovie is a unique one-off wonder. We can all relate. And he is best buddies with The Wizard and that can only mean one thing. He has to be a cool dude!
This was also a perfect episode, production, quality, and content.

I _love_ that little Porsche Spyder replica. Sadly, it's out of my price range, especially for something so impractical. It's a race car from an era when a barebones race car with lights (necessary for endurance racing, anyway) was capable of being an acceptable road car, both legally and in terms of buyer acceptance of the un-weather-protected driving experience.
    And here's a thing:
Lamborghini Muira was _not_ the first mid-engine production sports car. The Spyder (1955) was a mid-engine Porsche production car, and not the only one from that era! There were the Spyder, RS60, 904 Carrera, and 906 Carrera. Even the 908 Le Mans prototypes were _technically_ the last road-legal 'production cars' to race for an overall win at Le Mans, if I am not mistaken (1967-69, beaten by the Ford GTs). There was also the Alfa-Romeo 333 Stradale (1967), but I digress.
Anyway, Hoovie's Spyder would make a kickass pure sports car, for times and places where that works. But, I'm going to setup a Miata with manual steering, I think. Somehow I'll have to make room for my 6'1" self in that little car, potentially behind a biggish steering wheel.

my 99 diablo makes some weird sounds as do many of my cars. I think that's just part of owning old cars!

I had a similar issue on my 300ZX twin turbo. A moan about 3k rpm. It was the i take tract and started occurring when I removed the factory air box and added a high flow Stillen K&N intake. Put it back to stock and noise was gone. Check the intake tract and anything not stock in the air way including air filters.

I currently have the engine out of my -92 Diablo. I have several pictures of the engine I can provide to you to maybe give a hint what the moan can be. I myself have no idea what the sound could be. There is not very much back there towards the firewall. The only thing might be a transmission mount or an engine mount going bad.

With the Countach and the Diablo, I would love to have both or either. I have enough mechanical know how to work on certain things myself, and things like dead airbags do not bother me. I pulled the airbag steering wheel out of my 30 year old Honda Civic, i do not like the idea of a violent pillow smacking me in the face if I end up in a wreck... I will already be pissed off enough as it is.

Crazy suggestion with the Diablo. Send it to John Temerian at Curated. If anyone can figure out an issue on a Lamborghini it's likely to be him. He'll probably want to buy it from you, but you can always tell him yes and then change your mind. ;-)
And as for the cars being dead when you don't drive them for a while, have you considered getting battery tenders?

I think the move to make with the diablo is to take it to someone who has the capability to run the engine outside of the chassis. No way that doesn't show you the issue.

Good to see you appreciating all the Lamborghinis you have so maybe you have a little room left in your heart for an Aventador. Us folks in the cheap seats would love to see you and The Wizard do one of those.

I used to be a mechanic but never with exotics.
When you mentioned the musical instrument Reed. My first thought was, maybe one of the underbelly panels
But the Wizard knows better than most.

How I found a little tick at a certain speed.
I used my gopro with a magnet mount and a suction cup mount and moved it around the car and sure enough I found the problem. A loose clip on a wheel cover would cause the cover to move just enough at 30mph to make the noise.
