Please keep doing this Capri. I have also a 1984 Capri 2.8 that I have had 25 years and you are the first utuber to do this. I am not the only one that needs inspiration and help trust me a lot more owners like me are out there and will come across you and start following.
    Thank you.

I think you paid a little over. Your bid price was right imo.
The overspray under the bonnet screams cheap, quick respray.
If someone isn’t willing to remove the ignition box or mask the top struts, what else did they skimp on.
If the underside is clean, repaired well and no hidden rust your not going to lose money on it, id be looking for more shortcuts on a full inspection. Fibreglass bonnet and parcel shelf isn’t a terrible idea but purists are going to want to change these. The interior and exterior looks nice, and that’s where everyone’s going to be looking.
For a flip car, its not going to be very profitable imo. But if it’s bought to be enjoyed and driven, like the Capri should who cares, even a bad Capri is a good car. And this isn’t bad.
    Source: I own 4 Capris.

Thanks for the comment and sorry for my delayed reply. I appreciate you sharing your thoughts, it is useful to hear other opinions. My Capri needs work and will probably cost me a fortune at some point in the future, but right now I am addicted to driving and improving it - I bloomin' love it!

fantastic survivor, people forget how quick fords of that period and older rusted , I had a silver 2.0S Capri on a V plate around 1988 (so less than 10 years old) and it had lots of filler all over the place due to rust .

Thanks for the comment, I appreciate you sharing your thoughts on the Capri... it is a decent "survivor" as you say, with work to do to improve the car. I am certainly enjoying owning and driving it.
I really like the 2.0S in Grey. Nice to have one in your car history, I am sure you enjoyed it in '88.
      Thanks for watching.

Hi bud, Plymouth here. Just thought I'd mention that viscose coupling fans are supposed to idle until the engine is hot and should then expand thermally until it locks thus providing maximum air flow. Its a fuel/load saving feature. A possible way to check this is to run the engine with a blanket over the front of the radiator until it is up to/or above normal temperature then switch off the engine and see if the fan is locked. Apologies if you are aware of this bit hopefully it helps.

I remember being in college and knowing someone witha late 70s V6 Capri. I think it was carbonated. So long ago...At the time it looked spectacular. And even today still has terrific styling. It's great to see these cars being preserved. Here in the US, it was a grand alternative to everything else offered at that time. Kind of wish I had one now...

    Lovely example!
10 grand is a steal! Here in Norway a similar one would go for near 20 grand. Probably around 17.
My mate is currently restoring a Special in white that was imported from UK about 15 years ago.
Never owned a 2.8i, but mine has had 2.3 v6 2.8 carb and 3 litre engies. My first one had a really good 2.8 carb engine. Sadly the engine was stolen when I pulled apart my second one to be restored.
The quickest engine to date was a worked 2.8 carb engine with 200-220hp. It did 0-60 in 6.5 seconds. I might buy that engine back for my current Capri.

Love the capri my dad had four when i was a kid. I just loved riding around in it. The trouble with capris is that they rust very badly leading to an mot failure. Also over time the bushings become worn leading to unresponsive steering!

    Hello Andy
Once again great video really enjoyed the 2nd update on the Capri. You paid a good fair price mate as the prices of Brooklands are going beyond most peoples reach so the 2.8i Injections are what most Capri enthusiasts will turn to has they are more affordable and this will pnly make them a solid buy and a nice little investment (ok not cossie money) but you certainly wont lose any money the Capri wont de,value, also as its soon to be MOT TAX exempt which also adds to its value.
Now i know you like the OEM look but seriously mate a set of minilites on any Capri just make the car so nice although if im pushed for OEM then the pepperpots are nice. .Good decision in keeping the car but i do feel once the Cosworth is on the road you could well find yourself putting the Capri on the back burner so to speak as i think everyone subscribed to the channel is waiting for the Saff to be finished.
Anyway take care mate and enjoy the car, ive had our Focus RS to a few shows so far and if im honest only 2 or 3 Capri 2.8i injections have been there.
Looking forward to the next update and id be lying if i said i wasnt so jealous of those Cornwall A roads 😎
    Nigel 👍

    • @cornishcarcollectors
      @cornishcarcollectors  11 місяців тому

As always, thanks for the continued support Nigel, I really appreciate it.
Thanks also for sharing your views on the price, the Capri itself and the wheels... albeit I think this one will be going back onto Pepperpots at some point (I do like these 13" Stars though).
I'll need to spend some money on the Capri over the medium-term future, but I really am enjoying it. I went to visit the Sapphire today and the electrician gave me hope I may have the car back in mid-July so fingers crossed there's another update on that project this coming month.
Good to know the Focus RS is out at shows. Personally, I think the Mk1 RS is the best looking hot hatch of all time, a truly iconic car. Mine will be out again next year with the intention of 2024 being an 'RS year'!
Thanks for taking the time to watch and look forward to hearing from you again on the next. 👍

Think it's a great example to own, and those little imperfections actually suit it to a T..!! Like you said, it's a 40 year old Ford Capri and we're lucky it still exists!! First Capri I drove was a two tone navy blue and silver, automatic 3.0S!! I was only about 14 and obviously thought it was a rocket lol..!! It was my uncles and I was only supposed to be washing it, but sneaked a drive round the block in it!! Lol
And dont apologise for the garage..its how it should be...used and utilised lol
Great work and look forward to more 💯👍

Hello from Burry Port, 15 miles west of Swansea. Don't worry in the least over minor cosmetic issues. I used to know of a guy in nearby Llanelli who owned a Suzuki GT750 motorcycle and was so stressed about keeping it totally immaculate, that he used to immediately ride home if he saw a few clouds in the sky, even during summer ! There's little joy in that. You'll pay no road tax next year. Jammy ! My 1997 Pug 306 TD was £295 last year and will likely have gone up again this year.

Sadly the classic car markt has crashed in Europe, you can get superb W116 S Class 280SE Mercedes for 3000 Euros in Germany because the people became so poor. A Golf 3 VR6 you can get in top condition for 2 grand! A Granada 2.8 you can find in very good condition for 800 Euros or even on the scrap yards because all people lease electric cars or change over to E-Bikes or scooters. TR6 go for only 3 grand here in superb condition and even for this price nobody can afford them because all people lost the money due to inflation.

Nice Capri, owned a few 2.8's in the past. The fan coupling should feel rather loose whilst the engine is running normally, it tightens up when the coupling gets hot, I did the same job on one in the past, like you I purchased the special tool for the reverse thread. Also looks like the shroud is missing from the radiator.

  • @usernamesreprise4068

The whole reason FOR a viscous coupling on the fan is to prevent fan drag at really high RPM robbing engine power by allowing the fan to slip, and as high revs under everyday circumstances normally equate to higher speeds the air flow through the radiator isnt affected. where a viscous fan performs best is allowing the motor to rev free'er through the rev range but still shift an adequate supply of air, the fans rotational speed at tickover is sufficient to keep the engine cool...even the duff one you removed was doing that well enough. I smiled as you neglected to say that they are reverse threaded onto the pulley too lol.
If you ARE going to be keeping the car I would HIGHLY recommend you remove the fuel pump electrical plugs and clean them to within an inch of their lives AND most importantly smear the insides of them AND the contact posts with vaseline before refitting (dont laugh - even to this day it is STILL the only material known to man that never dries out and is perfect for electrical connections especially (inside) battery posts.- smearing it thickly all over the outside of the battery posts as some do merely makes a bloody mess and serves no usefull purpose)
I say this because hard earned experience taught me that the pump outlets being RIGHT BEHIND the offside rear wheel are in the absolutely perfect place to stop ALL the run off water and crap from the wheel, and quietly sits and rots till one day the contacts on the pump just corrode through right at the base of the pump and fall off - and then you are walking. I owned several Injections in the early to mid eighties and sooner or later it happened to nearly every one of them, I'm not sure what prices for them are today in our online world but replacement pumps were sold as RS parts, and were eye watering second mortgage prices from Ford RS dealerships back then....save yoursef future heart ache and do them as soon as you can.....and dont forget, ONLY use vaseline......silicone only stays waterproof under compression AND electrically insulates to boot and in this instance is next to useless.

A very good price. I've owned 3 Capris, a 2.0 Ghia, 2.0 Laser & also a 2.8 injection back in the 80's & 90's & they were good motors but had some real oddities & problems. Watch the bonnet latch, at times they were prone to failing & I've had door hinge pins break on me more than once, they don't take to being slammed which is easy to do given the length & weight of them & thanks to a heavy handed passenger had one fall off completely. The propshaft on the 2.8's were prone to vibration which was cured by (believe it or not) by putting two hoover belts on the propshaft. Another one was with indicator stalks, I don't know if it was for a specific model period but they were prone to failure but at the time were very cheap & easy to fix. Of course the hatch hydraulic struts were also naff, this however is a problem Ford haven't sorted to this day & my wife has a 2018 Fiesta Vignale that's caused me to nut the hatch more than once!

Great price. Had the '76 US version with a carburetor and literally drove the wheels off it (a failed wheel bearing) and had to abandon it due to poor-college-student-syndrome. Capri's have evaporated in the US. Or maybe they have just rusted away. I have a recurring dream where I suddenly realize I never got rid of my Capri and it has been stored at the back of a garage, or out in a local field, and I'm re-united with it. As I drive it, I always wonder why I didn't drive it more often.

I'd stick the original pepperpots back on it, they suit the car a bit better than the Special ones. And they sound soooo much better with a stainless Janspeed exhaust, not cheap but sound and look fantastic. Also I'm sure there should be a towing eye in the rear valance. Its attached to the spare wheel well and pokes through a slot in the valance, at least mine does but mines a Nov 86 built car. The price you paid if pretty good to be honest for a running, driving MOT'd 2.8.

Hi. I think you paid a good price for this very much appreciating classic. It looks in sound condition. I’ve owned my early 1984 2.8 since I bought it in 1987 so quite a long history together. Regarding the viscous fan, it should only engage with the engine above a certain temperature, under normal conditions it will free spin as your first fan did. When it engages you can hear it ‘roar’ as the revs increase. Your cooling problem was more likely either a faulty thermostat or water circulation problem - possibly an air lock- which will require the system to be bled. These cars are indeed prone to cooling issues but once sorted run fine even on hot days in busy slow moving traffic. Obviously mine hasn’t been on the road continuously since 1987 and only now this year is back after a 5 year break but didn’t need anything other than routine maintenance to get up and running and indeed sailed through its mot- hopefully the last time as it’s 40 years old next year. It’s a 5 speed in black so the colour trim issue isn’t a problem, and I fitted the 7 spoke alloys rather than the pepperpots as I personally prefer them but I know they aren’t original spec. Enjoy the Capri.

Last year I took the Family to Europe for a holiday (we live on the US west coast). While having lunch in Amsterdam of all places a 2.8i Special parked up, before getting out the owner put a sign on the dashboard and left. After lunch I wandered over, the sign of course was in Dutch, but the part I could understand was the Euro sign and 12,000. I went back to the table, my wife gave me the looks of "don't you dare", I gave the sideways smile and sat there, then sat some more, then said "Anyone fancy a quick trip to London?" A quick call to my bank to let them know I was about to make a large withdrawal, a text to the owner and my wife not looking to happy, I talked to the owner, we drove over to the bank, took out the cash, then back to the owners place to empty it of his stuff. I ended up finding a shipping company that would take the car from Amsterdam to Huston USA. So a month after I got back home, the car arrived. All in it was $16,000, a local shop is attacking some rust issues.
I ended up getting a summit racing radiator and dual electric fan sett up for mine. Being in Vegas and dealing with the temps hear I knew the stock system was not going to cut it.

The viscous coupling is a Disco 300tdi one...well that is what people sell as a replacement & it works with the only real difference being the mounting bolt holes being M6 rather than the original M8. You need the fan shroud too. The cooling system was never a strong point on the 2.8i engine. Using the correct genuine thermostat is also crucial as is making sure the bleed hoses are clear along with the correct blanking cap on the top of the rad & pressure cap on the header tank.

If that box on the dash has to come off I really wouldnt replace the whole dash just because of a small hole or two.....plenty of dash repair kits about and you can fill the holes in the same colour filler as the dash colour.....should be virtually invisible but of course replace the dash if youre going full on ground up resto but this Capri seems like a good honest base car no need to resto it.

I looked and cannot see, behind the cold start injector, I had a fitting capped with a rubber cap, probably for another model with different options, mine cracked and made a massive air leak, the engine backfired and knocked the plate in the K-Tronic injection unit, the air gap is very sensitive, took ages to get it adjusted right, poor performance and bad mpg until it was right. Rust proof it, look after it and keep it unrestored, roadworthy daily driver restore it later.

A lot of nonsense being spoken here by some posters about, "Capris rotting." Mk1 Capris certain did have corrosion issues- like all cars built in the early 70's. The 2.8i Capri was built in Cologne and Genk- Belgium. For Europe achieved higher build quality than Halewood- which built the Mk1 and Mk2 Capri. Injection Capris built between 1981-84 - up to an including 'A' plate cars, had the best build quality and used higher quality steel. From 'B' reg onwards, Ford used cheaper steel- so corrosion is more common in the cars built between 1985-86. The 1980's Capri's were no worse than any other 80's car when it came to corrosion. Cars built in the 1990's are more prone to rot- eg BMW E46- notoriously prone to rotting rear arches and front wings, name just about any mid-late 90's Mercedes- they are absolute garbage, total rotters!
Corrosion? I have an 1984 'A' plate Injection, which I have owned for 29 years. It retains ALL it's original panels and has NEVER seen a welding torch. Hardly a rotbox then. The Capri is one of those cars surrounded by urban myths- eg "You need two bags of cement or paving slabs in the boot!" I've never known a single Capri owner who ever did such a stupid thing- it's MYTH which is seized upon by people who haven't even owned a Capri.

    • @cornishcarcollectors
      @cornishcarcollectors  11 місяців тому +1

Thanks for the comment. I completely agree with you regarding Capris being subject to urban myths - I have never had an issue with "losing the rear end" of one. I do also agree that if a Capri has been garaged / dry stored then they survive well, but Capris were cheap cars for a couple of decades and as a result were not stored well... and these cars rot. Thanks for watching, I hope you stay tuned to watch my progress with the Capri. Your car sounds great, keep enjoying it. 👍

Only did it when it was wet./ raiiny. It's no myth, Went around a roundabout twice because I lost traction at the back and the car did it's own thing.. Yes it was wet. About the rust demon, Yep can attest to that, depends where it is kept and most were kept outside. You would maybe better off sticking with the capri, it has lots of room for improvements but the value will always be there. Anything that you spend on things like a good re spraying and a steel bonnet will increase its money value. Sadly from 2030 on all combustion cars including classics will be banned
from public streets in entire EU and Scandinavia :-( In Germany the
Green Peoples Party gave order to shorten fuel supply from 2025
on by reducing all conventional fuel stations to only one state operated central gas
station per city or county. Now they want to slow down all the gas station fuel
pumps from 20 litre per minute to 2 litre per minute...From 2027 on in
the EU certain car spare parts will be banned too....as exhaust systems,
turbo chargers and even some engine and gearbox oils...California and
New York will do the same from 2027 on.... So no investments should be
done in oil burning cars any longer....They even created a new kind of
