My Dad can play the Tar out songs like Tuesdays gone with the wind. That funky clean tone of Steve Gaines lead playing behind Gary Rosington’s lead in That Smell was righteous man. It was a team effort. Then after that Allen and Gary were harmonizing on guitars and that’s epic. What makes the entire song special is the way the whole song is put together.
The first solo was definitley Allen Collins. You can hear the tone of his Explorer! He's also using his tremolo alot. Steve didn't do that as often as Allen did!
Steve Gaines comes in underneath Allen with a Strat at 6:07 on "That Smell" and then they both play the outro together with the trade offs. Gary is doing the feedback while the song fades.
I’ve wondered if Steve would have become the front man if he had survived the plane crash. I heard one time that Ronnie told the rest of them that they’d all be working for Steve someday. It was not to be. Neither one of them wound up in “ the old folks home”. They got that right. RIP ✝️
That's true, and RVZ was Steve's biggest fan.Has anyone ever sat back and gave a long hard thought about the way things would have been if RVZ had survived the crash but Gary or Allen would have died? The reason I say Allen or Gary is because of their history and friendship those three had since playing baseball before playing music. What would have become of Ronnie Van Zant
Ronnie said we will all be in this guys shadow some day.. If Steve had lived but Ronnie still died, hard to say, Steve had great voice & he did sing on Street Survivor so we know he was lead man material. Just so hard to know how Gary & Allen would have felt, they loved Steve but they really worshipped Ronnie, meaness & all. Let's face it, Ronnie, Gary & Allen were the root core of Skynyrd.. Gary was already President of LSI which to me said Ronnie trusted him most. I still get a gut punch thinking abt the crash & thinking abt what could have been. Could Ronnie & Gary together have pulled Allen through losing his wife, I think he was always reckless from what I have read but after she died, he lost his anchor plus he felt very guilty abt his affairs, he wondered if God was punishing him or taking Cathy to get her away from Allen. Ronnie bein a father figure as well... IDK Allen's dad never showed up til the checks started comin in so I don't think Allen responded him much. It was just one tragedy after another. I think what kept Gary alive was meeting Dale & going to Wyoming to get away & have a family. So sad. Do love the solos! Never get sick of hearing any Skynyrd song
@@kathyrais574 thank you for the wonderful post. There is so much to think long and hard about in what you wrote. Losing both Steve and Allen at such a young age was a huge loss for the music world. Allen really lost his way after his wife died. I always thought he died of a broken heart. We lost so much when we lost Steve not to mention he left behind a wife and children(I don't remember how many he had). I always thought if it hadn't been for the plane crash and losing Duane Allman and Berry Oakley music may have been a lot different but we'll never know
Thanks to Emergence3D for including ALL of the Skynyrd members. Hughie was a beast. Combined with Gary & Rickey Medlocke- these 3 were second to only the original players.
Steve Gaines made Allen and Gary play even so much better and they up their game! I love Ed King for his fills but, Steve would smoke his ass and even Ed knows it. And so I am glad that Ed left because the world of rock and roll might never had got to hear and see Steve Earle Gaines shine.. Ronnie said he was a singin' and writing dude that never took his guitar off walkin' around and even sleepin' with it!! And if you want WEIRD, Steve and Ed share the same birth date!!!! Ed lives here in Nashville with his wife and two dogs about a mile and a half from myself.. "Alabama" has kept him very well off and he's happy..R.I.P. FREEBIRDS ! We will never forget you and always remember..Peace, Love, and Dixie !! Turn it up!! TL 2015
yep, I agree. He moved out to Old Hickory,TN. from Nashville. Seen him on Moonshiners recently trying out some Killer Gin that some of the shiners made here up in Tennessee. Ed is so cool still. Loves his dogs and his wife(not in that order?) Great to see him doing well. He's an incredible player and I hope he still talks with Gary. Skynyrd Forever Lives!! TerryL.
for SO MUCH long time i always thought that Blues Medley was i song that gary rossington wrote AND performed... seems so much like a gary's les paul....
that first solo is NOT Steve Gaines....that was Allen...it was his 'woody' tones....you can hear the pick hitting the string....he was digging in.....this was a very early version of the band....also there is the Wah Wah pedal....
Blues medley was recorded in the early days of skynyrd D: i agree with fender787 that its allen picking, im im correct, it was 1971 when they recorded it, steve hadnt joined yet
nah this is def. a strat you can tell a explorer , steve had better solo then the other two he put feeing in the solos ilike that smell he was best soloist there
Southern Rock is just the best. The Outlaws and Molly Hatchet are great too. The Outlaws new CD Dixie Highway. Kicked AC/DC ass and 5fdp this year for best rockin album this year in my opinion. The other 2 bands didn't have but 1 or 2 songs over 5 minutes. The Outlaws all were 5:00 or longer. If you haven't Dixie Highway. It's the best album I've in a very long time.
Rickey Medlocke was a Jacksonville boy who was the leader of the band "Blackfoot" Rickey was summoned back in 1971 to play drums when Bob Burns temporarily quit, these were the Muscle Shoals sessions which became "Skynyrd's First and last" released in 1978.
Kevin Copeland Thanks Kevin that explains a lot to me.If your a big fan you should check out Steve Vests swamp channel here on you tube. Hes got some great story's about the old Skynyrd gang.
Rickie not a bad player his tone is a little heavy changes the sound a little from classic tone watch freebird at the rock and roll Hall of fame show with him and Ed Ed playing slide on fast jam part would be cool to have Gary Ed Rick and Artimus go into a studio together let johnny home and not use the Skynyrd name so Judy not involved may have some one like Travis Tritt or Shooter Jennings do the vocals and see what comes out
HUMMM @ This........ All these great solo's and not one from Ed King. I dont know what is worse. This or only 3 or 4 noticed it? Ronnie hired Ed for his playing and song writing. From His "Strawberry Alarm Clock" days in the late 60's. After Ed joined it is common knowledge that Ronnie & Ed had a very special bond. when it came to writing songs. When Ed left by choice & Steve Gaines Joined he was a new spark to the band. just like Ed was when he join. The RRHF got it right. who's in & whos not
The first solo is ALLEN COLLINS. It has a Gibson Explorer tone, deep one to one and a half guitar bends, and a wah pedal in there....all trademarks of ALLEN COLLINS. You must be the same person posting other Skynyrd guitar solo videos, confused with who played what in Lynyrd Skynyrd. It is obvious that you don't have a clue. Guitarists have their own tone and style. You should learn them before posting erroneous information.
Where is the freebird solo at? That is prolly the best solo ever played!! This cant be the greatest Lynyrd Skynyrd's solos if the Free Bird solo isnt in there...
The greatest band ever. LYNYRD Skynyrd forever
fuknArite!!!
You sure get that right
YES!
THEY WERE ALL FANTASTIC.STEVE WAS UNBELIEVABLE ON T FOR TEXAS WITH THE SLIDE.OUTRAGEOUS
Gaines was the man! Long live Skynyrd.
Internet my favorite band of all time and I play the music

Long Live Allen Collins.
Amen Brother
Amen to that, we sure love and adore Alan here where I live in south ky / tn. Border
Allen and Steves 'Call and response ' solo on that smell is got to be the coolest thing ever put on vinyl....at 6: 30
Best guitar army ever!

BudMovies this solo was played on a firebird
@@darkarcher22miller44 with a P-90 pickup in the bridge position. I hear some Johnny Winter influence.
Phenominal collection of Skynyrd Guitar solos. Thank you for posting.

Allen had 2 girls, & lost his wife & in childbirth of the 3rd. I don’t think the baby survived either.
Another good one is Workin' For MCA live at the Kneworth Fair in England, 1976. the harmonizing of the guitars together, OMG. I love it.
Ronnie did the first Metal Growl ever!
THAT WHOLE SHOW IS AMAZING
The one from Blues Medley is Allen Collins, it was recorded in 1970
This young man had such a fantastic life and career ahead of him, it’s hard to fathom why he left us so soon.
I never knew Steve Gaines was such a good guitar picker, assumed Rossington/Collins played everything.
Thanks to Emergence3D for including ALL of the Skynyrd members. Hughie was a beast. Combined with Gary & Rickey Medlocke- these 3 were second to only the original players.

Ok I found blues medley. Thanks buddy. My friends didn't know who it was when I played it. They couldn't believe it was Lynyrd Skynyrd
I know when it is Rossington -- sliding is amazing!
That's an old comment brother
My favorite solos are from Skynyrd's First

Turn it up Australia cheers 🍻
What tha heck. There's several good solos missin' here like: Free Bird, Red; White, and Blue; Call Me the Breeze; etc... WE NEED A VOL. 4 HERE.
Yeah, the picking is from Steve, for sure xD
RIP Steve

Tell it brother!
Steve's was a great player, but Gary's got soul in his fingers...
okay, thx. ^^
Only a sliver of Ed King? WTF????
*The Three Guitar Mules*
Man can they play and bend some guitar strings
you are welcome :)

Is Allen using a whammy or is it a wah wah pedal around 2:42?
He’s using both, he had a tremolo on his explorer
@@ToTheMaxGaming1 thanks bud
So can someone tell me how/where did Rickey Metlocke come from?
Rickey Medlocke was a Jacksonville boy who was the leader of the band "Blackfoot" Rickey was summoned back in 1971 to play drums when Bob Burns temporarily quit, these were the Muscle Shoals sessions which became "Skynyrd's First and last" released in 1978.

He acts like he is something he is a joke compared to allen and steve even ed and leon
Anyone want to buy some punctuation?
@CaptNemo100 I agree completely there are a couple on here that i know are wrong for sure
I think that the Georgia peaches was Allen Collins it Gary Rossington, not Steve Gaines.

No Freebird? C'mon now.
