This is THE comfort episode of this show (honestly, I'd expected there to be none considering all the preceding angst). The frequent blushing, the banter, Catra acting like a cat again. Watching this for the first time made me squeal like a child. Once in a while when I'm feeeling down I rewatch it because I have nothing better to do.
...and of course, Melog; they were a key part of the whole "sweetness and light" quality of this episode (as much as it didn't seem so at first ). Finally, I thought, Catra has somebody who really gets her, and it's just exactly what she needs.

One thing I love about the 'fake' spoilers is that someone mentioned Catra's therapy cat in a comment WAY back in season 1, and I don't think any newcomers took it seriously - but it actually was a legit spoiler.

After everything that's happened on the show, this comfort episode is much appreciated. Adora blushing at everything catra does and then catra getting basically a therapy pet is so precious.

It's presented as humorous, but honestly I think that's one of the most important lines of the episode. Because that's kind of the whole point of Catra's arc, I think - that it's never too late, and you've never gone 'too far' to choose to try to be a better person - but it's something you need to _work_ on. I love the way the show subverts the "death=redemption" trope; Catra fully expected to die when she rescued Glimmer from Prime, and a lesser show would've said that that single act of heroic self-sacrifice would absolve her of all her past crimes. But she didn't die, and she has to actually put in the work to truly be a better person. I think that's a really important message: that no matter how far you've fallen, you can be better, but that doesn't come in a single final blaze of glory; it comes from making a repeated, deliberate effort to, one day after another, be a better person today than you were yesterday. And that's something that _anyone_ can do.
Dying a hero is the easy way out, and Catra's life is never easy.

The biggest problem with people who hate Catra is they refuse to see her as a cat. They only use human psychology to pick her apart. Then they will go pet their own cat that then bights and scratches them and they say “Awww I love you too feisty, kitty”. 😂

@@Turai12cats are very unique and I would say better than dogs. Dogs just love you because you are you while cats decide if it’s worth it to invest the energy in loving you. Once they do the bond is unmatched.
Also, people tend to forget that she was abused for most of her childhood, which won't make anyone a mentally healthy adult/teenager.

A lot of standout sapphic moments in this episode, but I particularly love when Catra's struggling with her helmet, and Adora's just over there crying with laughter. Think about this, have we EVER seen her so happy?
And I love that that seems to be Catra's realization, too. Whether she recognizes that it's been a ridiculously long time since Adora's been that happy, or she's just happy to be a reason Adora smiles instead of frowns, I'm glad that she can find happiness or joy from seeing Adora happy :3

I love how we see that Mylog responds to Catra's emotions, making them practically a therapy pet. Also, it means that since Catra fucking refuses to be honest about her emotions, we can just look to Mylog to figure them out.
Mosco nailed it. Catra and Adora use the power of gay to defeat the entire evil horde with rainbows and flowers. Great prediction. I can’t believe it took her this long to guess the endgame.
Despite only appearing about halfway through this final season, both Wrong Hordak and Melog are really great side characters.
I can't wait for you to see the finale, where Adora enters Super She-Ra mode after Catra proposes to her

I feel like a lot of people were willing to excuse Catra’s behavior for the sake of their otp, but to me her redemption is so much more meaningful because she seemed irredeemable for so long.

In terms of the timescale, it’s been a year since Selineas fell (“Mer-Mysteries”), as this happens on the night of Spinnerella and Netossa’s anniversary (also, an Etherian year is the same length as an Earth year).
Also, in the original cartoon, Catra had a pink lion named “Clawdeen”, but they thought it’d be too similar to Lion from Steven Universe, so they combined Clawdeen with Melog (pronounced “MAY-log”), a one-off shapeshifting golem (their name is literally “golem” backwards).
21:00 As Catra is a cat, I can only assume that Shadow Weaver found her in the trash.
Actually, she found her in a discarded applesauce box, hence kid Adora naming kitten Catra "Catra Applesauce Meow Meow" for obvious reasons.
Canonically, I believe it was a box.
Fun fact to keep in mind while watching the rest of season five is that Melog mimicks Catra's emotions(which adds to the gay)

I forget where I heard this, and I don’t have a source, so take this with a grain of salt, but I heard that Catra was originally going to have much more cat jokes (like the “is that a mouse?” but from episode 1), but AJ Michalka, the VA, was so moving in the more emotional scenes that they decided to write her as a more emotional character (hence the entirety of season 4).

Yup, correct. I think they originally thought about making the show more goofy in general. Scrapped early episode ideas include Madame Razz's sexy elf king ex (apparently it was gonna be a running gag that Razz's exes occasionally show up and she doesn't care about any of them) and Adora seeing some random cat and becoming convinced it's Catra.

I've seen someone point this out before somewhere, but from the beginning of the series Adora was more a planner type of person while Catra had been more a think on your feet type. But their situations led them to learn to do the opposite when necessary. Adora had to learn to think on her feet having to go into situations with limited information/resources while Catra had to learn to plan while dealing with the logistics of commanding an army.

Maybe this is a me problem but when you talk about "bloody sapphics" I really expect a lesbian vampire joke.
I've seen more than one fanart of Catra biting Adora's neck or shoulder or something and I'm like "yep, that's just Catra being Catra" and then found out it's a vampire AU lol.
In my mind, it sounded more like "Bloody sapphics, Batman!"
Finally, Catra gets her own Hamish.
The only thing that Shadow Weaver actually cares about is Magic. You can hear it in her voice when she talks about it (a great performance, honestly.) It's the reason why she never could give Catra the affirmation that she so desperately wanted from her. Catra isn't magic. Adora is magic (and I assume that Shadow Weaver named her that.) Micah is magic. Glimmer is magic. Catra thought that if she could prove to be as good or better than Adora at being a Horde soldier, that Shadow Weaver would care about her, but she never understood what moves Shadow Weaver.
Agreed. And it's not even the magic she wants, I suspect. It's the power it provides.
I imagine Adora is very glad Catra's claws are retractable considering they can cut through solid metal like that.
This might be the episode with the most cute Catra. She's mostly either cool, tragic or infuriating, but this gives us cute Catra, despite her protestations.

Horde Prime is beaten by a spirit bomb powered by all the love in the universe. You see Bow's Dads, Adora and Catra, Bow and Glimmer, Double Trouble, Entrapta and Hordak, the Star Sisters, the Star Siblings, the real Peekablue and more. The Star Sisters get a surprise when a spaceship lands in front of them and the Star Siblings appear from it. After all it isn't everyday when you meet a trio of people who look like they could be your identical twin.
I could definitely see how a family history of abuse could tip one's opinions of Catra very strongly in...well, either direction, possibly! Cartoons also often have a heightened level of physicality in character interactions, and shows differ in how clearly they communicate what's meant to be read literally vs. as a heightened reality sort of thing.
For instance, I've been reading/watching 'One Piece', and it seems like the tell for whether you're supposed to take violence seriously is whether the marks persist for more than a panel or two. Like, the good-guy characters will often bonk each other on the head if they're mad, and it raises a cartoon bump...which is gone minutes later, and they don't seem to hold any hard feelings, so it seems like it is meant to be metaphorical. Whereas if someone is MEANT to be abusive/an antagonist, the bruises/wounds they leave in their wake linger for quite a while (possibly permanently, as scars), as does the psychological impact on the character experiencing that.
This is why it's so easy to ship Zoro and Sanji. They fight CONSTANTLY, both physically and via insults, but no amount of kicks or sword slashes seems to leave a mark on the other AT ALL. And they can be quite protective if the other is actually in danger, so their fights just start looking like an excuse for attention/physical contact. At which point the viewer may start going: "Boys. Stop being so damn tsundere and just get a room already, I'm begging you!"
Catra's Tail - if you pay close attention to body movements in previous episodes, Catra's tail often touches Adora when Catra is verbally pushing Adora away... and one time, Adora actually looks down at the touch and smiles;
Catra's leap at Melog - definitely fight/flight, "I'm so terrified I GOTTA FIGHT IT!" (could even be stretched to her protecting Adora, but honestly I think it's just that kneejerk reaction);
Catra's Kind - there IS another catgirl in the Peekablue epside, one of the pirate captains that gets tied up by Mermista and Seahawk
Personal note... I adore the fact that though Catra is improving, she also remains at heart a sassy brat. I firmly believe that Adora would be very sad if Catra lost her sassy brat nature.
Fun note... spell Melog's name backwards :)
Extra personal note... the attention to body language in hugs. Catra is NOT comfortable with being hugged... but then, neither was Adora at the very beginning of the series. Adora was very stiff at first with the Best Friend Squad hugs, then gradually loosened up.
I also laughed greatly about all the yelling about "useless lesbians".
Also, cats are generally pretty finicky about being touched. Snuggling is very much a thing that either happens on their terms or... err... doesn't.
It greatly amuses me to realize that Glimmer kissed Catra first.

Catra's story arc was never about redemption, it was about healing.
Ehh... probably depends how many people got hurt or killed in the Horde offensives she led, I'd say. Plus there's Angella - who they _might_ in theory be able to get back, but it's not a sure thing.

OK, that makes sense. For me, and I suspect most Catra fans, the violence was just an extension of being enemies. She hurts Adora, because it's not just relationship drama, theyre fighting on opposite sides of a war. And when they were kids, most of it was playful, not abusive. So the majority of the violence is something we gloss over.
But not always. The end of season 3, Catra's mental breakdown leads her to lash out more personally towards Adora. Which is why that, and her trying to destroy the world out of spite, was a turning point for many fans. I didn't want to see CatrAdora after S3, and it took all of S4 deconstructing Catra for me to feel comfortable with her face-turn in the final season.
That's so admirable what you did to come to terms with your feelings for catra. It's like when y'all went back to look at HB through Blitz's pov to understand him better. Y'all are so cool ❤
I wanted to say this too! I love that Mosco is being so open about the fact that there were personal things making it harder to see what a lot of people did in this storyline! And then to go through the time and effort to actually work through it and understand more about her own knee-jerk reactions, it the kind of emotional intelligence that doesn't get displayed much anywhere, much less in reaction content. I really appreciate this
Melog is pretty much Catra’s therapy cat.
I'm familiar with the expression that the way to someone's heart is through their stomach. That way you don't have to waste time hacking through that pesky ribcage.
And here's Catra with claws sharp enough to cut through hull metal and can apparently extend out 5 to 10 centimeters. So given that Adora's lungs weren't cut to ribbons at the battle of Brightmoon, I think that Catra may have been holding back when fighting her and, if the ship is canon, Adora will need to master her magical healing abilities in order to avoid looking like a scratching post.
That or Catra could start trimming her claws in peacetime... not that that's likely. 😁
I remember a fan comic where entrapta's hair is actually a technology she created with implants connected to her brain.
In addition to the Catra is a Cat angle I've seen discussion pieces about how Catra is heavily coded as potentially suffering from Borderline Personality Disorder.

This was a really good episode for Catra to learn to fit into the Best Friends Squad. Being exposed to non-romantic casual affection, confronting her anger issues, and learning what sorts of friendly ribbing work with the people around her.
I feel like entrapta's hair is a take on hair fibers equal muscle fibers; a bunch together is strong

In finding Mosco's mug (the person who makes them owes you a cut of the profits), I came across a ridiculously cute version of the "hang in there!" poster with Catra in place of the kitten.
You may have warmed up to Catra a bit, but don’t want to put away that spray bottle just yet.
Old Fogey Time: In the original show Catra had a lion, not seen very often, it was introduced entirely so the toy company could do a Princess of Power toyline repaint of the Masters of the Universe toyline Panthro (Skeletor's purple panther), however Catra's cat was given pink fur, a mane, and jewels for eyes *at least for the toy*, and named Clawdeen. *and double checking to make sure I remember the details right, was actually in only one episode, despite how popular the toy was*. For this show I heard the name was changed because of Monster High having a cat-girl named Clawdeen, and the design changed to look more alien and also because Steven Universe famously featured a pink lion. Also let's be honest a pink lion wouldn't fit Catra's aesthetic...and not really the old Catra's either and considering old Catra could turn into a cat I guess that's why it was only in one episode, it was...redundant.
Whereas here they turned it into a sign of character growth. Sounds like a solid improvement to me.

Abuse is definitely a sensitive topic and people have went one way or another on whether such and such should've been redeemed in this show but I think they handled it well.
There was a fanfiction, where Catra's original claws were removed and she had metal claws, like Wolverine. I doubt Melog alone drove away the First Ones + Prime, probably many of them did, but died during the battles, that's why Melog is the only one left. (in fanfictions most of them were shipped off or used as slaves)
Well, it's been a thousand years since then, yeah? I would just presume they died off naturally. Possibly being unable to reproduce thanks to the lowered levels of magic.

Fun fact: During Taking Control when Catra is having flashes of the Horde Prime's Hivemind we get a brief look at Krytis.
I love how this episode showcases the fact that with no magic Catra is the single physically strongest person on the show. Barehanded she cuts down a 5 inch this ship hull plated steel wall. Its pretty apparent from just that display alone that shes been holding back a fair bit the whole show and could probably only be outdone by full power She Ra.

She-Ra original series lore Part :
Krytis was a planet used as a prison by the Horde. Prisoners would work in the mines extracting dangerous and toxic minerals, causing may of them to become ill. It's not know how far the planet is from Etheria (it didn't appear on the official map released with the "Masters of the Universe Classics" toy line), but Hordak was able to travel back and forth in a basic, albeit larger than normal, Horde Flyer. Light Hope sent She-Ra and the Rebels there using one of his Dimensional Corridors. Krytis only appeared in 2 episodes.
Catra had a feline companion like He-Man, a talking pink lion named Clawdeen. She had a mane, despite being a female lion. She only appeared in one minicomic and a single episode of the cartoon series but was more prominent in the Ladybird books. The same episode was also one of the times Catra used her Magicat transformation
We can let the lesbians save the world but they better let the asexuals keep Denmark when they do.
I'd be fine with that as a Dane, though you're describing it like lesbians "saving" the world means conquering it.
I didn't realize the asexuals had Denmark to start with. They've got a higher birth rate than Japan or Korea, last time I checked.
I think, outside of her self preservation, Catra's sees all of this as just being about her and Adora. Like, the bigger picture wasnt as important as just this all being about Adora being on Catra's side, or against her.
Catra was able to fight She-ra 1x1 and cut her with her claws, she maybe not be as strong as her, but it shouldn't be a surprise she can cut through steel
The difference is that steel doesn’t heal the way She-Ra does.
yeah real life experiences can really sorrow some shows when the way it is working in the show is based on how the show writer interprets it based on a certain trope, pet, person they know, like say a character based on a writer's sister and the character is kind of poking fun of how they were as a kid, but some watching that show would be irritated by that character and how people around them are just like, "oh you that's so you". Mable from Gravity Falls is like that. So many fans were and are annoyed by that character. Same too with how Anne in Amphibia was in season 1 or felt her growth was too fast in season 1, or don't like certain characters having heel face turns etc... Steven Universe got a lot of backlash from fans who didn't want to see certain "villains" get redeemed, rather than view it through the lens of (even horrible people can still care about their family)...that said that final season was rushed due to production issues so a few extra episodes of slower progress *might* have helped that (can't please all the fans). I could go on with examples from Owl House, and others with emotional complexity.
I kind of see a bit of my younger self in Catra, emotionally invested in a very small number of individuals, and easily going down a dark mental spiral at hints of rejection even only because the events didn't fit with (the plan) or follow (the pattern) and being taken out of that comfort zone was emotionally exhausting and felt like an attack and without a support network *in Catra;s case she got into an environment that enforced the negative thoughts by rewarding her negative actions* can go badly for one's emotional and mental well being. Catra basically was having a prolonged anxiety attack while being handed weapons of mass destruction and told "good, good, let the hate flow through you" without those giving her the weapons realizing that since they aren't who she projects her emotional investments on are just as much a target as everyone else. This doesn't excuse it, it explains it, and she has needed this prolonged small group therapy experience, getting rid of all the other noise, to work through her emotions.
This is...one of the best analyses for Catra I've ever read. Also shows the willingness of the writers to take the risk of some people hating the characters. If they had tried to please everyone, the show wouldn't have been half as good as it is(still good, cause this show is a masterpiece). Kudos to everyone who worked on this man.

"Bloody Sapphics!!!!" Gave me G-Witch flashbacks. Thanks for that. This episode is such a great example of how to start a redemption arc for a villain. And giving her a therapy pet? Frosting and sprinkles on the cake.
For context: in terms of G-Witch, aka Gundam: the Witch from Mercury, you'd be Miorine, Elijah would be Suletta, and Morgan would be Chuchu. Highly recommend not watching the prologue episode without tissues nearby.

I got to say your critique of catra was always very well done even at your harshest. As someone binging this in like a week I'm enjoying it. People can get very one sided on catra and never be open to other presepctive and you never got that bad. Season 3 and 4 catra certainly deserve criticism and a water bottle. I do think you gloss over shadow weaver a lot and I think comparing those 2 characters and the difference between them really show how Catra's redemption arc is so good. Also it's not always easy for people to leave the abusive environment that made them that way as that's the only thing they know and they assume the entire world is that way so Catra was never going leave in epsidoe 1 and 2. She knew the horde and shadow weaver were bad but she didn't have the hope adora did that anywhere else was better. At least in the horde they know the system and aren't lowest knt he totem poll.
Perfuma is sad because she was getting closer to scorpia… Seahawk determined to save mermista. And spinerella is gone I can only imagine what Netossa is feeling at the loss of her wife.
I love Catradora, but god damn does a little part of my heart flutter whenever they tease Glitra. So never forget that Glimmer kissed Catra first!
