'decentralized money' as opposed to a 'centralized' government issued currency. Also known as fiat currency when the government deliberately debases it's own currency through the power of the printing press which literally all and I do mean all sovereign nations continue to do. Now Bitcoin is a blockchain-based currency with built in algorithmic 'decentralized' safeguards that prevent this type of currency abuse.

Yesterday a young man planning a massacre at Federation Square in Melbourne during New Years eve was apprehended on the basis of financial monitoring data shared between a bank, AUSTRAC and law enforcement. Complex monitoring algorythms coupled with KYC protocols means that even when cash is used a trail is often still left. We can all sing the benefits of decentralised anonymous peer to peer transactions but sometimes privacy must be sacrificed for security. I live in Melbourne and may have attended that event so before you quote Lincoln just think about this for a minute.
All bitcoin transactions are publicly visible to anyone. They leave a trail which you can follow. Google "Sheep Market Scam" and the related account 1CbR8da9YPZqXJJKm9ze1GYf67eKAUfXwP. It was used to launder 96,000 stolen BTC by a fraudster. Trail is still there as intact and ready for forensic analysis as it was in 2012. Plus, just today UK Treasury announced their plans to require a disclosure of identity of bitcoin traders. Other countries will do the same. Eventually, the system is going to be an improvement on our current banking system but not as anonymous as feared / hoped (depending on your political views :)

Lol Bitcoin’s market cap was $12B when this was recorded 😍 Today it is $430B. In a few years I imagine it will be in the multi trillions 🚀 I think a 5% of net worth allocation is a fully rational decision today, even for those with a lower risk tolerance.
It was the example of machines being able to use money that blew my mind. There's often the question about automation and how can we move on to it when machines don't spend money and don't need to be paid. Either automation gets used by corrupt governments and corporations to make more money for themselves at the expense of people, or we can move onto network money, with automation, and create a new kind of society where people have to work less and still have the resources for a good quality of life. We are just at the beginning of something inevitable and truly transformative.

So many naysayers are out there. Like he said dont listen. When this video was published bitcoin was a market cap of 15 billion. Today it is 75 billion. You can say all you want and say it wont work but that wont stop the reality or the change that is happening. I would rather invest in a stored value than a currency that is in debt 20 trillion. The hard part for many is the transition from the mindset of paper currency to digital.

That said, the “flip-side” question of all this remains unsaid and perhaps not fully pondered - what are the negative consequences and fallout of total “decentralization” of value, communication and protocol? Ultimate chaos, confusion and anarchy? Breakdown of control, organization and progress? Bitcoin itself is now splintering and fracturing - bitcoin cash, bitcoin gold and forks and segits and numerous copy-cat and cousin cryptos and more ICOs on the way. If it happens with crypto, it will likely happen with any other technology based on open-source blockchain. Big Brother in reverse - everyone becomes a Little Brother and little progress gets done? Just asking questions, amigos; just questions.
@Gary - this is a very valid point, and something i have been pondering myself. As much as we like to villainize government control of currency, there are real benefits to our current system of money in the forms of 'protections'. ( this can of course be debated). I speculate that in the future, governments will issue their own cryptocurrencies (doubt they will be finite in qty). At that point, the IRS job becomes very easy. Kind of scary that crypto aligns with some biblical prophesies. I will leave it at that.

I wish I saw this video 5 years ago when it came out. I'm sure many will say the same thing in another 5 years down the line. With how difficult it is for the lay person to buy/use crypto, it still seems quite early. Just happy I got in now and not later. Great video, I have a lot more learning ahead of me.
Nobody tells it like Andreas does. he is the voice of enlightenment and understanding for bitcoin. It's not about money. But money is a part of it. It's about freedom, taking back power from those few who abuse it for their own benefit at the expense of the masses.

This is THE standard for bitcoin 101. At least at this point in time. Terrific.
It was the example of machines being able to use money that blew my mind. There's often the question about automation and how can we move on to it when machines don't spend money and don't need to be paid. Either automation gets used by corrupt governments and corporations to make more money for themselves at the expense of people, or we can move onto network money, with automation, and create a new kind of society where people have to work less and still have the resources for a good quality of life. We are just at the beginning of something inevitable and truly transformative.

So many naysayers are out there. Like he said dont listen. When this video was published bitcoin was a market cap of 15 billion. Today it is 75 billion. You can say all you want and say it wont work but that wont stop the reality or the change that is happening. I would rather invest in a stored value than a currency that is in debt 20 trillion. The hard part for many is the transition from the mindset of paper currency to digital.

Excellent video on the bitcoin concept. A dynamic, articulate and forceful presentation of its underlying theory and revolutionary implications for society and the world. That said, the “flip-side” question of all this remains unsaid and perhaps not fully pondered - what are the negative consequences and fallout of total “decentralization” of value, communication and protocol? Ultimate chaos, confusion and anarchy? Breakdown of control, organization and progress? Bitcoin itself is now splintering and fracturing - bitcoin cash, bitcoin gold and forks and segits and numerous copy-cat and cousin cryptos and more ICOs on the way. If it happens with crypto, it will likely happen with any other technology based on open-source blockchain. Big Brother in reverse - everyone becomes a Little Brother and little progress gets done? Just asking questions, amigos; just questions.
@Gary - this is a very valid point, and something i have been pondering myself. As much as we like to villainize government control of currency, there are real benefits to our current system of money in the forms of 'protections'. ( this can of course be debated).
I speculate that in the future, governments will issue their own cryptocurrencies (doubt they will be finite in qty). At that point, the IRS job becomes very easy.
Kind of scary that crypto aligns with some biblical prophesies. I will leave it at that.
A bit late but here I am. Amazing content man. I just want to clarify that money isn't the most ancient technology we came up with, weapons is. In fact there's a big gap between those two inventions in which many technologies evolved. Looking forward to watch all your videos.
