  • Blockchain, the key technology behind Bitcoin, is a new network that helps decentralize trade, and allows for more peer-to-peer transactions. WIRED challenged political scientist and blockchain researcher Bettina Warburg to explain blockchain technology to 5 different people; a child, a teen, a college student, a grad student, and an expert.

    In the 25 years that I've been a computer technician, the one thing that I have come to see as consistent is disappointment in how much goes wrong and isn't and won't ever be fixed. This refers to what she said at the end, and I think it is a fact rooted in the physics of the universe. We will always only do what is good enough, not what's good. It's like, companies are always a mess. Stuff that "should" be done is not getting done. They could hire more people and get those things done, but then that would reduce profits and the company was created to create profits. So, as long as those in charge think that things are going well enough to not just completely go out of business, it will always be a mess that's just good enough.

    • @thorkappabrosilon
      @thorkappabrosilon 2 роки тому +6

      You are precisely incorrect in your example. Companies are motivated by profit in a free market. When successful they “should” and will do what they can to make more profit and remain competitive, so they are innovating and pushing standards higher. A better example would be a government agency. They are not profit driven and do not have competition. So, they will do just enough to not be overthrown or disbanded. This is why streets are often littered with potholes and a visit to the DMV is often such an unpleasant experience.

      A chain of digital signatures has been talked about since 2001. The revolutionary part about Bitcoin and blockchain is not the ledger or the chain of digital signatures, but its use of economics to encourage all the parties involved to grow the network by satisfying their greed. No trust required.
      The technology and economics behind blockchain are equally important if you want to truly understand it.

    • @Dexx1s

      Yeah, it's because this vid is mixing different concepts. The only thing you need to understand is, "blockchain is literally an electronic accounting ledger." Accountants use ledgers to record details of incoming payments and outgoing payments, whom those payments are between, and the amounts involved (i.e. by adding up all those inbound payments and subtracting all the outbound payments you can determine how much money a person currently holds - the entire history of payments is recorded. Blockchain IS fundamentally just a record of "OWNERSHIP", which could represent ownership of anything. The bitcoin blockchain represents ownership of bitcoin. Other blockchains are used to show ownership of other assets.

      Honestly none of them explain it to the level of detail I'd like. But I didn't expect to find that level of detail here anyway, I'm just trying to say It's hard to find a video that actually goes in depth on the programming and actual technology. Like, where are the ledger files stored? What programming language is used? What file extension do the ledgers have? Etc, a lot of etc.But I guess sharing that sort of information could be a security concern?

      Part 2:

      This again depends on the currency. You can use any file type, whatever suits your need best.
      Bitcoin uses .dat files for blocks, .ldb files for lists of unspent transactions.
      4)
      This information is not a security concern. You can download the blockchain yourself, for any that are both public & permissionless.
      With regards to Bitcoin, anyone can download and store the entire blockchain. If they regularly update it, and manage it, then they are helping by keeping the network decentralized (assuming more people are doing it). The central authority in a mining pool will be doing this, as most people use some sort of pool instead of downloading the blockchain themselves.

      Or "Blockchain Consensus Protocols in the Wild"
      For the history of Bitcoin in academia, "Bitcoin's Academic Pedigree" is good.
      These articles should all be available freely online.
      Although, they could be a difficult read depending on your familiarity with computer science. They are a bit long too ;P
      Oreilly also has a good article that might be an easier read. "Chapter 8: mining & consensus" for example.

      bitcoin is an implementation of blockchain. The capabilities of blockchain technology are much larger than just bitcoin or even cryptocurrencies. People need to understand all the possibilities so if bitcoin crashes tomorrow, it won't take the public perception of blockchain with it.

    Too bad level 1 didn't explain blockchain technology at all--that's the level I came for. Guy at level 5 finally explained blockchain, which was the only coherent explanation of the concept: 9:53
    If you already know what blockchain is, it may be interesting to hear the discussions, but if you're looking for a basic explanation, try 9:53 or look elsewhere.
    VIDEO DESCRIPTION: A blockchain researcher mentions blockchain and related terminology and discusses trading as a function of blockchain with two kids and a college student, then discusses some blockchain-related topics with a grad student, then a blockchain expert defines blockchain and discusses some related topics with the researcher.

    blockchain is also very heavy and takes massive amounts of energy for computers to verify transactions. You pointed out very few of the problems. Most of what it solves is basically already solved by other tech that is less consumptive.

    • @Aviqu
      @Aviqu Рік тому

      that's false. Proof-of-Stake uses much less energy than Bitcoin for example, but don't just think it's bad that bitcoin uses the amount it does. That's actually good, because the physical energy is used to secure the network the best way possible, because no one can consistently put 51% of the hashrate onto bitcoin, which is the only way it can be manipulated. It would need so much mining devices and so much energy that it's realistically not possible to achieve without being the richest man on earth while no one notices what you try to do.

    • @Aviqu
      @Aviqu Рік тому +1

      what you are trying to say is the traditional finance' way of scaring average people of blockchain, because they fear getting replaced, which is understandable. But they should accept it. Time will tell. They rather should educate their customers how to safely store their Bitcoins on a cold wallet for example and emphasize the fact that this till now unregulated market is full of scams and rugpulls.
