    So yeah..... we bought an LGM-25C Titan 2 missile silo. The site was on alert from 23 November 1963 - 20 June 1985. After decommissioning the Air Force and Army Corps of Engineers exploded the top of the Access Portal and Launch Silo in 1987. The Access Portal and Launch Control Center were opened again around 2012 but were reflooded and abandoned after a pump failure. Beginning in May 2019 we have begun the task of renovating the complex and bringing new life into it. Wont you join us in the Atomic Underground?

    When I was stationed at LRAFB I worked security for the missile field from June 1981 until the wing decommissioned and shut down. As Security Supervisor I had six two man teams that were in the field at the same time I was. We all had a home complex and stayed down stairs with the crews at different missile complexes as we all worked 24 hour shifts. When the silos were active there were bundles of copper cables running from the Launce Center down the long cableway. No telling how many dollars worth of copper would have been there when they were active. I have spent many tours underground in one of those. Might have been in that one depending on which one it was. Brings back a lot of memories. Thanks for sharing.

    Growing up in Tucson the Titan Missile sites always intrigued me. Seeing military vehicles driving to the sites on a regular basis always reminded you of the potential of nuclear war as well as the weekly sirens being tested. When I started working for the phone company and regularly visited sites because our lines would be handed off to the sites from a communication hut just inside the missile site property. Later I was involved with the decommissioning project in that we had to disconnect all equipment housed in these huts. Being in close proximity of the silos I was able to speak with the contractors that were dismantling the silos. At that time they were literally blowing them up after they removed anything of value. The lids to the silo were cut up into small car size pieces and hauled away. I used to visit many of these sites out of curiosity after decommissioning was complete. Many of the sites had the large tube that connected the silo to the command center sitting on top of the ground so the Soviet’s could verify the Air Force was in fact making them unusable. While inside one of them I ran across blueprints for the communication wiring. I thought this was pretty cool finding them still in excellent shape. As years passed these sites have been bought up and built on. As mentioned in another post one is still for sale but i think the silo is completely filled up. That to me would be the ultimate part to have since its so massive. To bad they couldn’t have just sold them as is but you know how governments work. So much waist. Our aircraft bone yards remind you of that. Thanks Atomic Underground for sharing your silo and look forward to seeing your progress!

      thats quite common for major underground infrastructure projects, not just ballistic missile siloes. The cost of getting the diggers to the surface is more than the diggers themselves are worth, so they leave them underground.
      Sewage pipes, mines, foundations for large skyscrapers, and road tunnels, are good examples of projects where the diggers are typically left underground.

    There are 3 Titan 1 sites here in Idaho. Back in the early 80s there was one that was accessible, and I explored it many times. I had a unique connection to those sites, as my father was one of the fellows manning them. My parents divorced when I was 11 and I never saw him again, a pity because I had a LOT of questions about the facility. It was dry for the most part, only the lower part of the silos were submerged. There were three launch silos per site, with two additional blast doors opening on the surface for the radars and radio required to guide the missile for the first portion of it's flight. My father was the guy running the radar. The site near Mtn. Home Idaho is the only one I visited, but I went there dozens of times, probably breathed in enough asbestos to end me 7 times over.
    I ended up working as an armor instructor on a tank range not more than 3 miles from the missile silo where my father once worked. I have always found that to be a weird coincidence.
    I'm only posting this because of the whiskey. Yay whiskey!

    • @MichaelSmith-ms3jw
      @MichaelSmith-ms3jw 4 роки тому

      BTW, that site was purchased by someone back in the 90s sometime. The other two launch complexes were turned into toxic waste dumps. The one at Mtn. Home may well be intact, but they have repaired the old fences and gates, and it is festooned with No Trespassing signs.

    I pulled over 400 alerts with a Missile Combat Crew in the early 80’s, both in Tucson and Little Rock. In my early years, it was a great job.
    When they began decommissioning Davis-Monthan’s sites first, I transferred to LRAFB. The Air Force, in their corporate mindset at that time, RIF’d over half the officers out of the three Titan wings, so unless you played golf with someone important, hundreds of us didn’t make rank. The culture in SAC at the time was a strong one of CYA, especially for those above the rank of captain, and it got pretty ugly in the early to mid-80’s.
    I was told the Air Force spent In excess of a $100,000 training each officer, but in the end, just like these silos were expendable, so we’re the people who spent many a night in them defending freedom.
    I really liked the job, and we felt like we were doing something right and good with these missiles. I have many fond memories of my 400+ days underground over those 4 years, and mad a lot of excellent friends, but the way they treated a LOT of really fine people left a horrible taste in my mouth. I got out in ‘85, and I’ve never looked back.
    Sorry to sound doom and gloom, but most us us love those old missiles, and were greatly saddened by the decision to bury them. I’ve visited the museum site in Green Valley AZ - a site I actually pulled a few alerts at. It sure brought back memories, as did this video.
    With love, hard work, and some money, you could have a wonderful home at this site. All the original paint was a pale mint green, but you can hardly see that now. Sad to see it so dilapidated now, and like you, it would have been nice to see the control center equipment still in place. I don’t believe the deputy’s key went in that small table you showed us. I think it went in a console on top of a table that originally sat in a different location. The table you showed I believe was originally attached to the commanders console and held the decode books for incoming emergency action messages.
    I have a lot of information on these sites if you’re interested.
    I wish you luck with this project and am subbed now, as I want to see the progress you’ll make!

    back in the early 90's, some friends and I explored an old missile complex a few times up in Chico, Ca. Place was pretty much cleaned out except for a vintage forklift and some trash and debris. We gained access near a huge in-ground freight elevator and took the stairway down from there. Saw all of the 1st level, large domed rooms with rubber gasket joints and light fixtures on springs which we guessed was the Ops Center. The lower levels were flooded, but the water was so clear we could look down the shaft of where I believe a platform lift had been installed and see the floor of the level below. Small corridors led off of the main tunnels to the silos, filled to about 2' of where we were standing with black, stinking water, pigeon carcasses, trash, etc. For some reason all of the silo launch doors were left open. On the last trip I made there I checked out an old Quonset hut on the property and found a nearly full 5 gl. can of military degreaser. It was well worth the haul back to the truck...to this day I have yet to use anything that worked better than that stuff. Good luck with your project...subscribed...thanks!
