Patrick losing his stability in the world when he gets fired and arrested absolutely kills me. His character is so easy to love and his composure through all of the danger and loss he's encountered makes you marvel at the character's strength and resiliency. (This is echoed later on when Tom's wife tells him she thinks Patrick is failing but he can pull through, essentially if he could just have Tom's love again.) Younger Patrick thrives with humility through an impossibly constrictive existence, and then he loses everything he has for no reason- it makes you detest our history. Definitely one of the most heartbreaking plotlines for an endearing character that I have ever seen. David Dawson is utterly enchanting. I've heard people speak critically of Harry Styles, and I can't understand that because I also think his acting in this film is exquisitely nuanced and poignant. David's charismatic warmth pulls you into the undertow of sharp realities and Harry breaks your heart with his natural innocence and passion. The dynamic between the two of them has an excruciating depth- their characters' vulnerabilities are expertly juxtaposed with the cruel injustice of their fate. I love this movie because it doesn't over-explain everything. It asks you to realize what's unsaid by feeling through everything. If you appreciate the special kind of complicated, realistic heartbreak in My Policeman, you might also like The Cakemaker and Summerland- two other films which I feel have some of that same complexity.

I enjoyed this movie but hated the ending because of how true it is for older gays how they had to live a complete lie or else they’d be abused or worse.
I feel so bad for the wife who ended up alone with nothing while Tom and Patrick got to be together.
    Not cool.
But whats really not cool is homophobia and how real it still is everywhere.

I can't explain the pain and beauty in this film. It just is insane to think it's impossible for men or woman to love each other the same as man and woman do. They loved each other deeply. I think Tom was bisexual he wanted Patrick and Marion but Patrick loved for Tom and only Tom. 40 years of not seeing someone but loving them the same as from the beginning is wild. Dealing with the effects of a stroke not being able to care for yourself being in the same house as the love of your life and unable to see them is wild. Hearing what is said about you amongst the love of your life and his wife is crazy hearing his voice and not being able to see him or talk to him. Not knowing what he looks like after 40 yrs . My heart hurts 😢. Marion knew he loved Patrick and Tom couldn't bring himself to say it from the shame. He was alive when they were together. Tom was so innocent at times.

shame that women are always getting hurt in these type of situations. shame on the artist for crossing that line when he knew the officer was married smh

Such a moving story, that last scene just kills me every time I see it. I became a Harry Styles fan after watching this film. Never paid him much attention before. Great discovery, this gem of a movie.

I ship Tom and Patrick aka Harry and David 100% David is MUCH better for Harry than Louis I know David is married but these two are MUCH better together than Harry and Louis. David is older than Louis anyways and Age gap relationships are the best!! Also they look more compatible and are just all around better together who agrees with me?? ❤❤😊😊🎉🎉🌈🌈

In the book it is stated that they didn't have kids. But no information about Patrick's life after his release from prison and to the point he moves to Marion and Tom's house

@@lurdes_995 I like that honestly. I think it was done in a really specific way because the book also ended on an open note. I like that we can infer what happened because gay life back then wasn't something that was supposed to to be talked about in public. We saw how bad his life turnt out and it really gives you the impression of mystery like from the very beginning

Bethan Roberts wrote this from the perspective of a redeemed woman. In reality, Marion was dastardly to the end. She never redeemed herself. She deserved no redemption arc. She was wretched the entire story.

She was a young woman who was tricked, betrayed, and made to feel like she was being treated like a fool! She did an awful thing - no question about that, but I think her bringing Patrick to live with them was her trying to make amends. It began then, before she even knew the depths of Tom and Patrick's relationship. I also understand her reading Patrick's diary because Tom was never forthcoming, and she had to find out the truth somehow. We can love the boys while still finding sympathy for the woman who was tricked (unintentionally, but that's irrelevant as it resulted in her wasting her life with someone who was never hers).

9:30 - 9:50 I can't forget that Partick chased Tom out of his safe, respected life, and gentle marriage. He wouldn't get out of his life. Patrick should have let Tom alone but he didn't. He even showed up uninvited to Tom and Marion's honeymoon!! ??
