The problem is, everything has been done, so you see lots of games combining genres to create the illusion of an original game. Back in the day, everything coming out was genuinely innovative and fresh. I will always remember how groundbreaking Super Mario 64 was, we may never see games that revolutionary ever again.
Careful, you'll anger some folks. But here's my opinion: I agree that games are becoming more of a chore. I felt this with Horizon Zero Dawn. That's because we're bombarded with bloat to increase longevity of said game. But I feel the Japanese, particularly Yakuza franchise, does the open-world a great justice. Each time I come across a substory I'm like " what is waiting for me? " Now for Horizon Zero Dawn you see a sidequest, you roll your eyes and you're like " Oh, sh*t, I'm gonna grind again like a caveman". I always disliked modern gaming before this trend on Tiktok started. I can tell you it started from Watch Dogs. I waited 2 years to get it. I followed the news, reviews, friends and everything only for the game to be an utter disappointment. And it was tragic because I grew up with Ubisoft, and watching them wither was really sad. My advice would be to go the traditional way. Stop following big UA-camrs as they just parote the same thing as the big media sites they criticize. Use your brains and watch trailers and pick the game YOU want to play not what the MASSES want you to play. Recently, I played Evil West, and Wanted Dead. Absolute goodies. I've been playing Dishonored: Death of the Outsider, another good game. And an obscure gem called Wavetale. I don't agree modern gaming sucks as a whole, but mainstream games do. A lot. Go for AA games as they focus on one thing "fun". Games these days have all these vast worlds and narratives that it's overwhelming. Gaming's biggest mistake is going full-on Hollywood style. And don't get me started on mainstream games trying to shove lessons down your throat. It's ridiculous. You ought to check my piece about how I don't like modern level design.
