This is so underrated I don’t understand how actual science and tips isn’t getting as much recognition as just watching some of these famous lifting who aren’t helping you at all. Keep it up Matt love the vids and they help a ton!
I would also recommend alternating side bends with the bar on shoulders, and heavy unilateral overhead press, side and bent press to also develop lateral core strength. One of my favorites for core strength is pull-ups facing the sky with legs straight up, actually making it a row, but it smokes my core. Good core is essential to healthspan. I'm 63, the fountain of youth has a high iron content. Never stop lifting. Great channel. Never fails to impress and enlighten.

Love using all these exercises for building strong core for squats. I use band crunch for retraction for the back and weighted planks, my 2 favorites along with others.
I've added a lot of band exercises from these videos to my prehab work and it feels great, thanks! I would just mention one arm kettlebell swings for those without a reverse hyper. Eagle sit-ups are also great as a replacement for an incline sit-up (don't pull yourself all the way up, do a slow eccentric). And of course, the Swiss ball crunches...Charles Poliquin swears by these, tough and effective.
I find the kneeling cable crunch with the long ab straps from Spud Inc allow me to load up a ton of weight. The elbows/forearms take the weight so you’re not limited to grip strength.
I've been looking to strengthen up my abs because I'm getting really lean but I'm still looking a bit soft in that area. My back is jacked because I focus a lot on that area though. I knew if I typed in Matt Wenning abs he would come thru for me. Only thing I hate is commercial gyms don't typically have hyper extensions. Sucks because it's probably one of the best hamstring exercises and I'm stuck with basically just doing back extensions with a 45lb plate for high reps.
Truth on the reverse hyper. First couple of sets every time I use on the reverse hyper I almost black out and have to lean against it. Once I adjust to it, I am good.
I do extreme dragon crunches ( i lay on my bench press normally grab the uprights with my hands and basically do dragon crunches at high speeds... it kills my abs)
I actually never train my core, when I squat,ohp, bench and deadlift. I feel my core a lot and when I was doing jiu jitsu, everyone was telling me that I have a hard core but I've never had a 6 pack but my belly is really hard. I guess the barbells just do the job
Since we're talking about diet, what are your thoughts on OMAD? Would you do it on off days or would you do it throughout a deload week? This is to just clean the gut of any toxins and just look leaner and cleaner
The main lifts are hell for my core. Recently after doing deadlifts I braced so hard, if I braced after training it hurt in one area of my abdominal wall. It went away after 24 hours loool.
Abs if we are to get technical, muscle size, strength, and visibility are all made in the kitchen bc that is were were get nutrients. A skinny guy that doesn't workout is either going to be "skinny fat" no abs or will have flat lame abs. To make bigger abs just like any other muscle they have to be trained aka "made" in the gym bot kitchen. So the strength of abs as you express as well as the size is made in gym by stimulating adaption, size and strength. And they are fueled and "revealed" in the kitchen. 😉

I like the decline situp with a barbell in the elbow. I used to use a plate behind the head but it's easier to dial in a weight with the bar.
