Omg this video is just what I needed! I've been spending so much time worrying that my jewellery isn't particularly unique when I should be spending more time on my brand and telling my story. You're absolutely right - I've always bought things from other makers because I connect with them in some way but never thought of focusing on this in my own jewellery.
Hi lovely Joanne, yes it's so key! Helping people get clarity on this is a big part of a jewellery brands success and that's why I give it a lot of attention in my academy.
When I say I am STRUGGLING with ideas because I never want to "copy" or be unoriginal. I have almost a subconscious belief that I need to make something that's never been done before for it to be worth making/buying, and it prevents me so much from creating, even in other artistic expressions. This video makes total sense, and I can see how most jewelry is different versions of the same thing over and over, and the most unique things are more rare. Thanks!
Try a little experiment with yourself... Tell yourself that nobody will see this piece and see what you feel inspired to make. Take away the judgement and the fear and enjoy making for makings sake. Also try not to look at too much jewellery as inspiration. Rather do a brainstorm of an idea or concept. 😉
This is EXACTLY what my partner and I have been discussing today! Both the part about the jewellery itself and also that people buy from YOU. I’m definitely having trouble with finding the confidence and self esteem to believe that anyone would want to buy my jewellery when they see me; I suppose I don’t feel as pretty as the jewellery I make and I have got it into my head that if I put my face on social media platforms, people won’t want to buy my jewellery. Bless you!! There is so much that makes a person beautiful, and only a fraction of that is visible. Crazy how we can put so many obstacles in our way and tell ourselves stories to keep ourselves small. Go out there and be beautiful yourself!!
