He helmed one of the only four shows in history where all the main cast won emmys for their work. Will & Grace, All In The Family, The Golden Girls, and Schitt's Creek.
Schitt's Creek? That show is just god awful melodrama. It has a cast that has and can do great comedy, but....
@@skipads5141 lol ok
All in the Family is Norman Lear
@@RWRogers: No, I'm not kidding you. The show is low melodrama with no comedy discerned. It came out at the perfect time for virtue signaling. 10 years before, 10 years later, it would be thrown aside as the steaming pile of 🐕💩 that it is.
@@RWRogers: Come on, don't pretend to be so dumb or obtuse. Nobody does that. Everybody encounters background noise. It comes on Comedy Central if the TV's on in the background.
You might also realize that sometimes more than one person lives in a household. Maybe not. Maybe you've been a hermit since birth. Anyway, this is how so many guys realize shows like Friends are absolutely terrible: because chicks around them have the show on. You really have zero imagination in solving simple, simple, simple real life riddles. This is how Schitt seems ingenious to you.
Ironically the only thing I remember from Will & Grace is Jack & Karen (Sean Hayes and Megan Mullally), they were so damn good
I don’t think it would have lasted w/out Jack and Karen, they were so brilliant.
Hands down brilliant episode. So many goosebumpy moments
Never heard the widening the bathtub analogy before but I love it.
There is something a little gatekeeper esk about saying there are only 30 great writers now a days. Mabye not a million but I think the opportunities are wider today than in the 80 and 90’s. To say that only a set number of greats can exist just rubs me the wrong way. However, I still respect the joke.
I felt the same thing. It is a good thing that there arent only 3 networks. Back in india too so many people have gotten opportunities and livelihoods and regular work now rather than them struggling their whole lives for those top networks and channels
I loved and love Cheers. I will watch repeats even now. The characters were engaging and endearing and the writing is so funny it hasn't aged and can hold its own still today.
I think it’s about having a greater range of voices that could resonate with a broader group of people. Meaning it isn’t necessarily about connecting with one large base but connecting in deeper ways to different people. I think there are pros to both approaches. Its not necessarily a dilution of talent
Well said, I tried to make a similar point in the comments section but was not as concise as you
Conan, I really enjoy you on TV. I hope that we get to enjoy Conan O'Brien with a tv show again soon! Best wishes & a shout out to Andy.
It's not just that there are too many shows that are average to poor, it's also that the good stuff on every single streaming service is behind that service and respective paywall and most people will have two subscriptions at most. so we are now living in a streaming world with the worst parts of cable tv...
I agree 100%. When Netflix came around it was groundbreaking that you could pay for 1 streaming service and potentially "cut the cord". Then other streaming services started popping up which took content rights away from Netflix and did something Netflix did not do, charge a subscription and a pay per view charge for the hot titles. I feel like we have regressed in a way because if you need all the streaming services and you have to pay per view the hot titles you are stuck with 1999 cable all over again but instead of paying 1 company a lump sum its divided over several bills. What made Netflix unique was lack of major corporate sponsorships, and with their new free tier model with ads, understand that the new Netflix content will have to meat the guidelines of the new advertisers.
@@hendrixj.8356 exactly. As the guys from Red Letter Media said, you have to be an expert on corporate politics and mergers just to understand where to watch the next episode of whatever you want! ahah
We have indeed regressed and companies will only understand this when piracy becomes rampant again people start dropping from these services like flies. but fear not, it's inevitable that Disney will just by up every network and production company and we will finally have the one true streaming service to end all others! Disney and Content will be One.
James Burrows has done to television what the late Hal Prince had done to musical theater.
Devil’s advocate - the shows on the 3 networks were written by people who had similar points of view and catered to lowest common denominator.
Not back then, not all of them. Now yes.
Conan is looking good....it's obvious he is working out
He had gotten a tad flabby, so it's good that he's stepping up his exercise.
The industry in general may it be in tv or film has seen an increase in shows which makes everything more challenging. The only consolation you can get is that you now serve a broader audience due to platforms like Netflix and Amazon prime.
The downside is now Netflix and other providers demand even higher levels of viewership to succeed.shows can be the most watched in the country for three weeks and still not get another season
I've heard Will & Grace described as 'Amos & Andy' but for gays. The characters are stereotypes which is where a lot of the jokes flow from.
A lot of comedy from that era was stereotypical and we laughed. When cancel culture started, it brought on the death of stereotypical archetypes. I believe that form of comedy will make its return because observational humor isn't about classifying people or saying that's how all of X people are, its about the observers experience with people they don't understand.
@@hendrixj.8356 it can’t return, because that humour is lazy and once you realize it, there is no going back. That’s like saying Henny Youngman will get popular again. The world has moved on. For the better.
Definitely stereotypes. When they started it off again a few years ago they definitely settled down with the jokes, got over political, definitely killed the show. They should’ve just ended where they did back in the 00’s 😭
Started Cheers, still in season 1.
Never tire of Frasier- my favorite dry humor.
A shame Peacock doesn't have Will & Grace and Seinfeld.
And idk what CBS does for streaming, they're terrible. Everything was a music copyright problem with what I liked so I gave up on them pretty quick a while back 🤷♂️
The difference between Cheers and Frasier is that in Frasier the whole main cast (from the front of the box) is incredibly smart, including the dog. In Cheers everyone's an idiot.
I love Conan. He references 1985 in this podcast. I would have been 10 years old
Lol happened quickly. In the mid 90s Winamp had shoutcast which was the canary in the coal mine for hollywood that things would change. They didnt care.
Conan should become the CEO of NBC and close the circle. He knows the business.
Well, if you are willing to widen the pool from which you select your comedy writers, you may find there are more than the 30 great ones........probably 80-100. If you fish in the same pond you will find the same old number.
Very good 👍 👏 👌
Te amo Conan 💕
If each show needs 80 people (median) minimum to operate, and there are 580 shows, then that's nearly 50,000 people between LA, Atlanta and NYC. So, what 70% in LA ? So 35,000 people just in direct TV production. Add another 20,000 for studio and agency people. And all high salary jobs. And some crew shots show 200 people cast and crew.
There are more great shows on now, but the ration is just the same as it always was. If it was 5% out of 100 shows and it's now 5% out of 600 shows, that's still a lot more shows that would probably never get an opportunity. A lot of talent that couldn't get in the door before, now gets a chance
I used to love Cheers but was disappointed by the last episode. I had a friend who was Les Charles brother in law Les having married his sister Zora. After thinking about it. I would have had the last show be a regular episode wit the usual goofy stuff, but at the beginning a long haired kid with a back pack comes in, sits at the bar, and ordered a beer. Somewhere in the show you see him pull out tablet and start writing. At the end of the show, Sam says to the kid. "Time to close, this is our last night, by the way, I'm Sam." The kid says. "Les, Les Charles. Too bad." and leaves.
Conners was good when it came back moreso once Rosanne left because it changed the show.
W&G should never have been resurrected. We binge-watched the whole series right before it came back and the new series paled in comparison, enough so that it made it like ending on a low note
4 channels Abc, Nbc, Cbs and fox..with hbo..go to the theaters a bunch during the year to see blockbusters..rent the independent or fun movies for home..that was enough for 20 yrs.
Everybody complains about gatekeepers....
The lack of gatekeepers on the internet is why we have crap TV and crap music these days
It's Outrageous
I understand Conans job is to give praise to a legendary writer, but If you can only buy 3 flavors of ice cream of course you will have high demand for each flavor. But if you go to the supermarket you see a whole isle of flavors, does that make 3 flavors superior to the others? Sure people will buy "chunky monkey" and "netflix and chill" but is the vanilla, chocolate or strawberry flavor saying those other flavors arnt worthy of being in the same isle? Look at spaghetti sauces, you'll find hundreds of varieties does this mean theres too many and only 3 are actually "good"? The media landscape has shifted with the consumers appetite, people like to fine tune their viewing experience just like they prefer to fine tune their shopping habits and pick their favorite ice cream, spaghetti sauce or mixed drink. Chill Chums for the win
I have nothing to say…bit have to comment because i am one of the early birds here
I disagree. There are SO many talented people who NEVER got a chance before because the options were so limited.
Conan, America’s Basil Fawlty, towers over and beyond the Cone Zone
I Made A List Of Things That Aren't Going To Be Wrong Any More
Yea you can’t scroll. It’s awful. !! And there aren’t any easy ways to find newspaper articles. The papers don’t have advertisers so the papers are thin. You have to go find the articles
Shaaaaazzzzz
Yea, unless your show is good and on a streaming platform. Then, it gets canceled immediately.
"If you can get 9 people to watch your pilot, your show gets picked up" .... So I guess only 8 people must have been watching Conan's show on TV ..... ouch .... #burn !
Interesting that Burrows thinks the non-stop jokes in _Will & Grace_ made it his funniest show. It's what made it unfunny to me because the characters became joke spewing cartoons. _M*A*S*H_ had an addiction to snappy one-liners but it took breaks to have actual dialogue as well.
I am a Zookeeper in Atlanta and I regularly feed the Hippos day old Sausages so they have a taste of their home. I put strings on the sausages and swing them around the Hippos they get so Mad at me and Scream but it's an obsession sometimes the hippos try and Break out of their Cages but I keep swinging those hotdogs in Wide Circles over their heads. Luckily my Boss doesn't know I do this or my Coworkers
Bravo teasing animals. right up there with pulling wings off butterflies.
Wow u should do that with steve-o's
Neilson ratings are not accurate...isn't it based on select amount of people with things hooked up too certain tvs houses right?
Conan I need your help! I have ZERO subscribers yet! Come on dude - I`m the Swiss Joe Rogan!!!
The female with the bun in her hair's laugh is awesome.
It’s creepy to call women ‘females’ my man.
His name's Conan
Er no it’s not
How many networks? No bro no we will do you live in?
Look up the word ‘exaggeration’.
@@tel4650 If anything, there are MORE channels. Just look up any cable or satellite channel list and they can go past 300 for the premium packages.
Will & Grace was bad. Even in 1998 when we had no streaming, no youtube, and only a few commercial channels to choose from I couldn't stomach it.
Given his resume … strongly disagree
Yeah, Burrows was the one putting out I have dozen truly great shows and hundreds of really funny episodes, and you've decided better than him that you know which one was the best. 👍
Will&Grace is not the funniest show i've seen. It is not even the funniest show that Burrows has done. To me, it was a show i watched only if nothing else was on, i didn't mind it that much but it was so meh, quite unbelievable really how it would b the funniest in his career.
It was packed with jokes, that's his point. Also comedy is subjective. Personally I think the funniest show Burrow's ever did was NewsRadio.
@@RandomPlayIist Most likely, yes. NewsRadio is one of my all time favorites, i still watch it with potato quality cause the show is just so damn good... and it has Phil Hartman, Dave Foley, Maura Tierney and Stephen Root...
Burrows calls the cast of Will & Grace "four girls." wtf? In an otherwise enlightening interview that was unexpectedly tone-deaf.
Not to mention "a fairy tale...literally and figuratively." Not ok
yes this and the "fairy tale" comment
@@lb5368 have u seen will & grace? The characters referred to themselves as ladies, girls and fairies ALL THE TIME! I'm LGBT and am also able to understand context.
@@paddycraig so am I, and you're right that it happens in the show. My context is that time has passed. Some of the terms that were accepted during the run of the show (and even the reboot) are now widely considered offensive and don't need to be perpetuated.
Agree but he's in his 80s and obviously doesn't mean it to be discriminatory.
Conan why are you depressed
For an interview about comedy shows, he was surprisingly in the dumps. I actually think he's burning out doing the podcast. It's just not doing anything for him anymore.
@@4seeableTV facts
Ha ha, you can almost hear Conan's brain screaming "Wtf ... !!! Will and Grace is your funniest ?? NO WAY !". Personally, I watched a couple of episodes of Will and Grace and just couldn't watch any more. It was lame, childish humour. The story ending could be predicted after 5 minutes. And the acting was terrible. Hence the actors didn't go on to anything bigger and better ( no, sadly a podcast - even this one - isn't a career step up )
Yes, it is strange that Burrows thinks that the quantity of humor on _Will and Grace_ is equivalent to quality. The characters on that show were always joke-spewing cartoons to me.
An all lesbian cast. So groundbreaking.
Then you never did a funny show. Tried to watch it as so many tv shows liked it. It sucked
What are you talking about or referring to with this comment?
They're referring to the title of the video, and the section where he states Will and Grace is the funniest show he's done. Humor is obviously subjective and a lot of people loved Will and Grace, but I tend to agree. I barely found it watchable, let alone funny. He did a lot better stuff than that in my opinion. But to each their own.
Sona's forced laughing has gotten really annoying. Sona, if you don't actually think something is funny, then just don't laugh about it. Ugh.
I've never been able to sit through an episode of Will and Grace. Jokes about the sexual ambiguity of the characters..... seems distasteful.
Odd,... Becase I like most other shows the guest has been involved with...
Too Many Ivy League Writers in Hollywood...Broke People are Always Funnier
Conan was an Ivy League writer. Great.
It was the worst show on TV. Change the roles & you’d be in court asap.
That was a really vague way of saying nothing.
@@bobbabai The irony of criticizing a good written show with a badly written comment.
Cringe af 😁
He rights shows and movies have gotten terrible
I loved and love Cheers. I will watch repeats even now. The characters were engaging and endearing and the writing is so funny it hasn't aged and can hold its own still today.
