  • The farm's got new additions and the horses are NOT happy about it!! We have three new baby piglets in the horse barn today! After we put them in their new pen, the girls (my wife Brenda and daughters, Trudy and Abby) make applesauce with our overabundance of apples this year!

A few years ago, I had a couple of hogs to take to the butcher. I ask my neighbor to borrow his stock trailer and he hauls horses and cattle in it. He said that a horse would not get into the trailer after pigs had been in it. He is the type of guy that would do anything for you .

All the years my Mom canned food from our garden kept us in plenty of good food. Sure miss those fresh green beans. My little sister moved to Dallas and made some friends. Invited her friends for dinner. She got out a jar of Mom's garden canned green beans and served with her meal. Her guest ask, where can we purchase these beans? Sis laughed and said, you can't they came out of my Mom's garden. They said, these are the best beans we have ever eaten. And truly they were great. :)

I love Hampshires. We had a Hampshire boar many years ago who was so gentle that kids could ride him, even though he was almost 800 lbs. I kept a lot of his daughters because they were really gentle too. My weaning average went up with such good, gentle sows.
I like your strainer. It looks like it is better about not leaking juice all over the kitchen than mine is.

Wow,this is great. Watching your pigs grow will be fun.Hope they grow well for you. Our family farm had raised many thousands of them over the years. The pork and apple 🍎 sauce make good eating. We also had apple trees that made lots of apple treats. Apple pie made with lard crust is my favorite! My wife is a very good cook. Thanks!

That's an interesting contraption! I wondered how you dealt with leaving the peels on. I have a "cheatier" way of making applesauce, but I have to peel and core them first, so I'm not sure it's really a "cheat." I just toss the wedges into a crockpot and let them cook down all day. But it's pretty much just me, no crew to enjoy the process with. You are blessed to have each other! I remember the days when my mom and aunts and I would gather to cook up a mess of whatever. Boy, those were fun times!

I love making applesauce. I have a Victoria Strainer. I wash my apples and cut out the bad part, cook the apple until soft and put it all through the strainer, core and all. Strainer does a great job of kicking out the peel, and core with the seeds. Doing mine next week.

I have one of those pressers made by Squezzo that makes making juices, salsa, and several other garden and fruits easy to can. Tomato juice, is one that is easy and I have to add water to cut it some as it otherwise is to acidic for some to drink. Same with the grape juice. Your channel is one that is true to home grown hard work that all ways makes my day, keep up the good work making these movies.

BTW I loved seeing another aspect of farm life! Do you guys have anything like a root cellar? Would love to see that. The house I grew up in was an old log house with asbestos siding. It had a dug cellar under it very small. Wasn't very good as I remember stuff regularly froze in it. When I was about 10 they dug a new one out in the yard, and built walls of concrete block with an empty can storage room above. It worked much better.

I don't think Lady is entirely convinced about the pigs! LOL Having said that, I have never seen impatience on your farm before; Piglets and Apple sauce on the same day? Now that is a threat of intent! LOL. Be well all. ;o)

Homemade apple sauce….mmmm good! Yup horses JUST don’t like 🐖! I think it is the smell of them! I couldn’t believe it…this summer my boy actually SNIFFED NOSE to NOSE with a red piglet, I just about fell over backwards when de did it! Normally his head is high, he snorts, gets wide eyed and wants to race past the pen to get away from there! Enjoy your apple sauce🍎🥣

I have a couple of pigs-- my horses are fine with them--just curious-- so funny as your horses are so calm and experienced! it must be the screaming they don't like.

I wish I could introduce you to the joys of Peasegood Nonsuch (some call it Nonesuch). Huge apples, waxy skin, that are second-to-none (hence the name Nonesuch) when it comes to apple dessert or sauce..
