It may be possible, but I wouldn't recommend it. You'd have to ruin the shielding of the USB 3.0 cable and you would also have to work out which 2 wires are for power as well.
Hey mate! Thanks for the helpful video. I followed all the steps yet can't seem to get it to work. As soon as I connect usb and power, windows shows *USB not recognized* and the device manager window keeps refreshing. I have tried alternate usb cables, constant power sources, different ampere rating like 2, 3 and 5A. Even tried different PC's - windows 7 and 10 with usb 3 and 3.1 ports by Intel. Would love some help!
Yes I found this out on Black Friday as I was going to buy an Xbox One S then - but not being able to take Kinect with me put me right off so I bought a PS4 instead and kept with my old Xbox One. Can't believe MS have done this Sony have kept the Playstation Move going and are even incorporating it in their VR headsets, without the Kinect on the Xbox how on earth is VR going to work properly, also how do games like Just dance work with no motion controller, and the main Xbox camera is the Kinect so there is all the camera based games gone, not to mention the voice recognition with Xbox is also all done through the Kinect. Microsoft have really screwed everyone over by discontinuing it like this - would it have really cost them that much just to keep manufacturing the special cable?? I wonder if anyone on AliExpress will make a replacement or what about Logitech, they always seem to keep good stuff going when Microsoft get bored with it.
I've done this for the Xbox one X and can confirm it works. Plug USB into the USB1 (port next to the HDMI ports) Tip: go to Kinect set up and then the voice function region before yelling at the Xbox for 10minutes.
Hy what type of cable I have to buy ? A simply USB 3.0 Type B cable like this ? www.amazon.it/dp/B00NH144GK/_encoding=UTF8?coliid=IMHDHR6C9ZTUA&colid=1IR7AYKCY6F8O&th=1
Any DC Adapter 2.7Amps or greater (MUST BE 12V) will work. Be careful using a soldering iron as the hot (12V) DC pin is close too others. You will want to solder to pin 10, it is marked clearly. The ground is the easiest to solder too and is farthest to the right and I would save it to do last. If you are concerned with taking the sticker off, use anything plastic (Do not use metal it scratches easier) like a guitar pick, and an eraser to get it completely off. There are other common household supplies to take the sticky residue off as well. There are two types of screws that you will need to take off. A regular torx T10, and a torx security T10. You can use a 2.0 flat head screwdriver if you do not have a torx security bit.
Depending on what was shorted and how it was shorted, you could fry the USB, motherboard, or PSU. Most likely if your PC doens't turn on anymore, you probably either fried the motherboard, popped an overcurrent/short fuse in the motherboard, etc. I would buy a multimeter and test all your solders prior to connecting it to essential devices like the xbox and PC. Also tape your connections or do continuity tests. Take your time.
Awesome video, thanks! Got my Kinect working on the Xbox one S. I wired the 12v DC input with a 5.5mm x 2.1mm female adapter hanging out the back. This way if the power supply ever fails it's a quick plug and play swap.
Works, thanks! I used a blowdryer to remove the stickers more easily. Pulling the plug didn't work for me, first de-assemble the kinect, remove the fan cover, and you can deattach the plug.
Please come back to making videos. I literally keep randomly finding your channel because you’re a YEAR ahead of all the things that currently interest me and already did all the heavy lifting of making it all work. Your videos rock, hope all is well on your end.
Thank you very much for this DIY hack, works perfectly with a 36W power source. Tested only on Xbox One S, 2018. The welding on the board is quite tricky cause of the space but after soldering, you can fill the place with plastic from a plastic glue gun and make sure it doesn't go/touch anything.
Great video. I appreciate the inspiration and instruction. I wanted to make a 3D scanner and...the cheapest thing was rated one of the best 3D cameras! I finished mine just now and it fired up the first time, though I had my doubts, given that Windows gave me no indication whatsoever that I connected the box, and there were no lights on the box. Sure enough, I got a pop-up telling me that my changes required a restart and my PC sees it just fine. I varied from your method in that I actually had a power jack laying around and I cut a plug from one power supply and transplanted it to another 12V 3A supply. I drilled a hole just under the USB port and mounted the jack in there, running the wire behind but up-top of the USB like your method. You just never know with these supplies, and since I'm a 61 year old disabled former military electronic tech, I'm done with all the cutting/splicing/soldering and just want it to work! Thanks so much!
Awesome Tutorial! I bought an Xbox One X only after seeing this video. I wanted to play Just Dance and Kinect was the best way to play. I purchased a used $36 - Kinect, $10 - 12V 3A power supply, and a $6 - Amazon Basic 3.0 USB cable. It was hard soldering the positive wire to the #10 pin as it was so small and close to other pins but took my time and was careful. Works Great! Thank you, Daley Tech!
Can also confirm that this works for Xbox one S. I was very upset to get an Xbox One S for my daughter for Christmas, with a Kinect. Microsoft discontinued the adapter and only to find out these ugly adapters are going for just as much, if not more than the console. This hack/mod works great. Thank you so much for posting this.
michael perez Not really. Works great! The solder connections are quite small, but I already have all the tools I needed since I'm in the tech field. Very easy mod! Can confirm this works with Xbox One X. I've had my kinect up and running for most of the days with no issues using this mod. The hardest part about this mod was waiting for my power supply to arrive in the mail and then having to spend a wopping $2 at the hardware store for a T10 security bit.
good luck with that, it works really well once its all synced in, but it takes huge amounts of usb bandwidth when running 4 ps4 cams and the V2 kinetic. I couldnt tell whether it was a bandwidth issue or signal interference but I use WMR. The controllers use a usb bluetooth dongle. Between it all... I experience massive slowdowns and the bluetooth controllers occasionally drop when I have the kinect plugged in. I got a regular xbox 360 kinect. Additionally: the usb is plugged into a usb 2.0 whereas both the WMR headset and the bluetooth controllers use usb 3.0. Intuitively I would assume since they are different interfaces they could NOT interfere with one another. Would this assumption be correct?
THANK YOU! Damn dude you literally just saved me 50$ cuz I was about to buy the adapter but f*ck that I'll just adapt a 12v plug and use a USB cable... Thats amazing man seriously!
Wow what kind of wire strippers are those? I'm too scared to wire anything to do with power for fear of burning my house down, but I really like how you stripped that wire! ;)
DO NOT PULL THE CABLE OUT, IT IS NOT GLUED AT ALL. When the Kinect is disassembled it's only 2 extra screws to remove the plastic cover from the fan and you will be able to disconnect the cable without any force with the added bonus of being able to remove all the dust stuck behind the fan. Since the Kinect are know for thermal issues you should do it anyway.
interesting... I think I might need to get my hands on a kinect. I always thought it was kind of worthless until watching this video. Can't wait to see what you end up doing with it. The beard is looking hardcore as ever, keep up the good work.
Yeah, I'm very curious to see what sort of stuff you can do with it. There is plenty out there, so I just hope I find a few things that are super cool.
Bought the usb cable and a 3A 12V power supply. The connect has worked for a couple weeks. However, now it powers on with the Xbox for about 1 min and then turns off. It seems to try to come back on a couple times but only displays red lights on the front. If I unplug it for about 30 minutes then plug it back in it works again but the same issue happens. Is it possibly overheating?
As of right now you might as well buy the adapter off of amazon for $27, because you would have to order the $10 usb 3.0 adapter off amazon anyway (the one used for printers doesn’t work and you can’t find the 3.0 version in stores)
Hello, I followed all the steps. Only when I connect the kinect to the pc via the USB port it connects and disconnects without stopping. Also it is displayed as unknown device. Can you help me please
Sounds like a non compatible USB controller. These really prefer to be connected to an intel controller or Renesas. Ones like Etron/ASMedia/etc are you supported.
Thanks for your good video! If you don't own such a power supply you can safe the money for it by using the 12V rail of your PCs power supply as I did. But be careful not overstressing it (usually you don't)
Hi, thanks for your videos, i'm here to ask you what version of kinect is better for scanning, V1 or V2? i'm in doubt and i don't know what should i buy. Which of them is more accurate for scanning? Thanks
Yep - you'd have to either splice (if you want to retain the original or wire the other wires onto a usb 3 connector. I think the soldering power on is cleaner.
I was thinking the same thing. Seems the problem here is there is no 12V/3A going into the Kinect to power it on. So why not isolate the 12V/3A wires on the original cable and supply it power? Here is a picture of the original cable opened and showing all the wires(i42.tinypic.com/2h5qqs8.jpg). Please use Internet Explorer to open the link (doesen't open correctly in Chrome, not sure about other browsers). According to this you need to attach the power supply to brown and grey wires: Brown wire: 12V Gray: GND for 12V Red: 5V Black: GND for 5V (USB GND) Doing this will keep you from having to open up the Kinect. You would only need to buy the power supply since you would be using the original Kinect cable. @dbeasley1980, have u tried splicing and did it work?
Does it matter which pins you solder the ground and positive to? Not which pins, but which pin they each go on like you did. Could you do it opposite of what you did? If that makes sense lol
How did you solve the USB controllers issue? I bought the XBOX ONE Kinect and the USB adapter, and installed the Kinect for Windows SDK but the Kinect won't function because of USB controller settings?

Do you have a lab bench power supply? If you do you can figure out the exact wattage it needs. Many lab bench power supplies will show you the amps being drawn from a device. From there you just use the power formula power in watts =(amps)(volts). Once you figure this info out it would be possible to build a custom power supply or buy one. I would do what your video suggests, but I am wondering if the kinect is still working. Did you over power it, or is it under powered?
It's being powered just fine by the power supply I'm using. I've heard of people having success as low as 2.4A. But going over it won't hurt at all since current is drawn and not pushed. I did use this quite a bit on my PC and it worked great.
Looks good especially now Microsoft have discontinued the adapter which really sucks if you have an old Xbox One with Fru and want to upgrade to the S but are restricted because Microsoft stopped the apapter and now everyone is selling the adapter on eBay for like £150+ I want to upgrade my Xbox One but paying an additional £150 just so I can still play my Kinect games - no way! I'd rather just stick with my original Xbox One!
Many thanks. I found out in the end, and the only one I have is about 50cm! I have found that tracking on the vive constantly cuts out when the kinect is running. Because this cable is so short, I can only have it about 1 meter away from one of the base stations and it's directly under it. Is there a better position which would help?
Sorry, I have never tested this out with a vive.. But since this uses USB 3.0 and your Vive uses USB 3.0, try putting the vive on a 2.0 port, or try to move USB ports. Not sure if it wil fix it, but may help or make worse. Worth a shot though.
Hi, Sorry for some reason just assumed you did this for the Vive. The issue is that the Vive base stations also use infrared lasers for positioning, and since the kinect also blasts the room with IR, it causes tracking issues (for myself at least).
A question - if I run this mod for my Xbox one x will the Kinect always be on if the power supply is on or will the Xbox turn off the connect when the Xbox itself is turned off ?
After numerous attempts to solder the wire on pin 10 the little protruding bit on pin 10 fell off. Tried soldering on what is left, succeeded but when I connect it to the computer nothing happens. There is current flowing between the wires, checked with an ampere-meter. Another way I checked is by connecting the wire to the pin manually with the power still on, it gave off a spark. When I did this the computer got a signal but it only said the USB was faulty. I was using a wrong type of cable (just the square USB 3 type). Got a proper USB 3 like in the video, tried it again and no computer prompt whatsoever. Retried with the former cable and still no prompt. Is the issue to do with pin 10? How would I go about in fixing it?
Be careful to pull out the usb cable straight out. It looks like it's on an angle but it's not. I broke my usb port trying to pull the cable out. I wasn't able to fix the port so this unit is scrap.
I just did this mod. Do you think the 12v could have fried my PC? I plugged it in via usb3 and now my PC won't turn on. The Mobo light is flashing green. I'm afraid I motherboard or my PSU. :(
Thanks a lot! I really appreciate the sentiment. In this niche field I somehow doubt it, but that would be friggen awesome if I did though :) I'll try to keep the content rolling in!
Nice video, can you tell me if Kinect V2 still worth it like a webcam? i wanna a good webcam and i think K V2 it's awesome but a really want your opinion 😄 like
Help, I picked up a Xbox 360 at Goodwill but it doesn’t have a fan in the center of the back, and no special usb 3 plug with extra conn on top, but it does have a fixed cable with what looks like a usb 3 plug at the end. Can I use it to scan with, if so how? Thanks
I'm not sure if the fan is always spinning or not, but if it's disconnecting and reconnecting over and over, that's normally cause it's connected to an incompatible USB controller. Try different USB ports, and make sure your power supply is big enough
Would 12v 1.0A work or would a DC 11v 1A work. And also what way do you wire it up if there is no coloured wires inside do it from Which ones positive or negative because I just have two black wires with strips of copper inside them
I Can confirm this works, I used an old 12v 1.5A DC power supply. Windows recognised it straight away! Thanks for the video, saved me a bomb for the official adapter
I also used the 1.5a power supply. I’m concerned that it’s not going to be enough in the long run..... I wonder why people are saying you need a 2.5a or above?
Anything with a USB 3.0 port. Now, depending on what you want to do with it, you may want to add or subtract processing cores. General rule of thumb for me is 4 core, 8-16 GB of RAM depending on workload, SSD storage, and consider a built-in GPU. Integrated graphics are kinda garbo.
Good afternoon! My Kinect V2 I'm using the original source and it's no longer working and I'm not able to get it to work like it used to, it started to present problems when it started to lock the camera and then it didn't work anymore. It is recognized but it doesn't work as a 3D scanner or as a webcam, I don't know what I did wrong on the PC and I went to test it on another PC and the same thing. I don't know if he did a firmware update and caused this problem. Could you help me and do you have all the drivers that work on Windows 10? my PC is a Ryzen 9 5900X, MSI MPG X570 Gaming Plus, GigaByte RTX3080ti 12Gb EAGLE....
I do have 12V power adapter, but i dont have color wire like in the video, it just 2 black wire which can be split into 2 part. All i know is, it is positive polarity symbol. Can i use this ? I can connect it just like in the video ?

Since the Kinect are know for thermal issues you should do it anyway.
thank you you help me save $50 on an adaptor I didn't need
no problem!
interesting...
Worked for my Xbox one x. Great video. Thanks!
Done it works, strongly recommend ~!!!!
@Steve Underwood i can try to remind myself i think. But anyway it burned my kinect quick in 2 3 days if i remember good
Hello, tell me what parameters should be on the power supply suitable for kinekt 2.0. many thanks
Does it need USB 3.0, or will a 2.0 cable work, because ive done everything, but sill no light.
Hint : Use a hairdryer to get the sealing off, it is much easier as to remove it manual. Besides you can use it again :P
Cant you just cut the cable that goes into the kinect and solder two connectors to the specific cores? Like one for data one for electricity?
you could but this is just way easier tbh
nice google search
@@bugtogs9344 nice comment
As of right now you might as well buy the adapter off of amazon for $27, because you would have to order the $10 usb 3.0 adapter off amazon anyway (the one used for printers doesn’t work and you can’t find the 3.0 version in stores)
I followed all the steps and realized I didn’t have the cable
Hello, I followed all the steps. Only when I connect the kinect to the pc via the USB port it connects and disconnects without stopping. Also it is displayed as unknown device. Can you help me please
Sounds like a non compatible USB controller. These really prefer to be connected to an intel controller or Renesas. Ones like Etron/ASMedia/etc are you supported.
Wait so, the port is only sort of proprietary? and A USB Type B will plug right in there?
Hello , just have question its save to keep always on power , if pc turn off and power for kinect still on? Nothing's hapen? Thank you
Going out to buy parts to do this tomorrow... What wattage soldering iron would you recommend? Or should any do?
Funciona perfectamente en xbox one s !!!! Gracias!! Mil gracias!!
What are the USB u got , having issues to pair my one with pc , there was something mentioned in regards of using Intel chips .
Thanks for your good video!
If you don't own such a power supply you can safe the money for it by using the 12V rail of your PCs power supply as I did. But be careful not overstressing it (usually you don't)
That's a great point! That will work for sure :) Plenty of current there available on most power supplies unless you have Xfire on older AMD GPUs. heh
Does the fan on the kinect run when it's just powered or when the usb is connected as well?
Hi, thanks for your videos, i'm here to ask you what version of kinect is better for scanning, V1 or V2? i'm in doubt and i don't know what should i buy. Which of them is more accurate for scanning?
Thanks
Has anyone successfully just spliced the power cable in instead of opening the Kinect up?
I haven't done it, but that's what I'm going to do. I really don't know why everyone just opening them up.
Won't you end up with a power supply cable (that you can connect to a socket) and a USB cable without a connector?
According to this you need to attach the power supply to brown and grey wires:
Brown wire: 12V
Gray: GND for 12V
Red: 5V
Black: GND for 5V (USB GND)
Doing this will keep you from having to open up the Kinect. You would only need to buy the power supply since you would be using the original Kinect cable.
@dbeasley1980, have u tried splicing and did it work?
I tried it and it dont work? I plugged it in my usb 3.0 and it gives me an issue on the usb 3.0 with this: !
Does it matter which pins you solder the ground and positive to? Not which pins, but which pin they each go on like you did. Could you do it opposite of what you did? If that makes sense lol
Just to make sure, will this modded adapter still work for normal xbox one (not an S and not an X)?
could you tell me the model of computer or laptop you are using for the demo?
Couldn't you just cut up the propreitary cable and sorter stuff onto there?
(as in, the 12v cable and the USB cable.)
yes!!
soldering all these tiny wires though...
i use 12v/3A DC, my kinect power on and sent video, but auto shutdown/power on in 10 minutes, how fix it?
do you also need to remove the power from the port so you don't fry any 5V plugs with 12V or doesn't it matter
Does this work for the 360 kinect aswell??? PLEASE ANSWER :(
I don't know if anyone can answer me but how much amps do the Kinect needs, what the minimum amps need?
GOOOD VIDEO! Direct to the information and not to much bla bla bla. GOOD GOOD GOOD! thanks a lot. Greetings
How did you solve the USB controllers issue? I bought the XBOX ONE Kinect and the USB adapter, and installed the Kinect for Windows SDK but the Kinect won't function because of USB controller settings?
I'm not sure what that issue is. I never ran into it. What is giving that issue?
Daley Tech, what would say works better for body tracking: 4x ps eyes or Kinect V2?
Both can work pretty well, so I would use whichever you have on hand.
Does the cooling FAN works?
Gd question, I would like to know when the fan runs too.
Work on xbox one s. Power supply 12V 3A and usb3 cable . Thx
its working with you without any problems ?
What type of USB cable exactly?
Like this one:
www.ebay.com/itm/USB-3-0-A-Male-To-B-Male-A-B-M-M-Cable-Adapter-Printer-Scanner-Cord-Wire-15FT/401112083087?hash=item5d6424aa8f:g:4AIAAOSw2GlXIGYh
I wonder if this will work in conjunction with raspberry pi and magic mirror and use the camera as a motion sensor....
Daley Tech I ordered a the adapter. Would you be intersted in finding away to do your mod but never open the kinect? ie save warrety?
Hey soo i was gonna do this with out a video tutorial but decided to check anyways but shouldnt the 12v be going in via the pins 9 - + ?
Looks good especially now Microsoft have discontinued the adapter which really sucks if you have an old Xbox One with Fru and want to upgrade to the S but are restricted because Microsoft stopped the apapter and now everyone is selling the adapter on eBay for like £150+ I want to upgrade my Xbox One but paying an additional £150 just so I can still play my Kinect games - no way! I'd rather just stick with my original Xbox One!
oh shit my ac adaptors wires dont have color coating.. its just copper... what do i do??
Hey would I get any issues if I went with a 10 foot cable instead of the 6 foot you linked? Also what tool did you use to strip the cables.
What sort of USB cable does it need? Usb 3? Is it just a standard USB printer port?
I needs to be a USB 3.0 A-B cable.
The issue is that the Vive base stations also use infrared lasers for positioning, and since the kinect also blasts the room with IR, it causes tracking issues (for myself at least).
oh no, that does make sense though.
Works like a charm. Thanks!
A question - if I run this mod for my Xbox one x will the Kinect always be on if the power supply is on or will the Xbox turn off the connect when the Xbox itself is turned off ?
What kind of solder are you using? I can't seem to get mine to actually stick to the pins on the Kinect. Thanks
Flux! And clean the surfaces with iso prop beforehand, as well.
nice work sir..
Is there a 360 tutorial because I found there is better compatibility for pc games and it’s cheaper.
Are you able to use the ir mode? I'm thing of using this as an indore security camera.
How would I go about in fixing it?
what about the 12v going back to the pc through the USB cable? Is there any protection?
the original USB cable is a modified one. I guess the pins for 12v don't exist on a standard USB port, so there is no problem
Great Job! THX. Vielen Dank. Funktioniert bei mir (Xbox One S). 12 Volt 1,5 A Netzteil.
Thanks man, you saved me a lot of hassle and 50 BUCKS. ;)
nice vids man.. like your vids.. I am feeling it some day soon your gonna be bigger than a guy like Austin Evans
Thanks a lot! I really appreciate the sentiment. In this niche field I somehow doubt it, but that would be friggen awesome if I did though :)
I'll try to keep the content rolling in!
Anytime man. Any way you could make a video for fathersday maybe like diy vr for under 100$
Thanks for the video, it worked perfectly.
The biggest problem is that you need to disassemble it
And then soldering directly to the board, ouch
my power supply has a positive and negative but no ground, do you know how should they be soldered too the pins?
I don't know if this is still helpful but negative is ground.
Nice video, can you tell me if Kinect V2 still worth it like a webcam? i wanna a good webcam and i think K V2 it's awesome but a really want your opinion 😄 like
Yeah, it's a great webcam.
Help, I picked up a Xbox 360 at Goodwill but it doesn’t have a fan in the center of the back, and no special usb 3 plug with extra conn on top, but it does have a fixed cable with what looks like a usb 3 plug at the end.
Can I use it to scan with, if so how?
Thanks
does fan spin on the back of kinect when plug it in? I did mine it's just connecting and disconnecting
I'm not sure if the fan is always spinning or not, but if it's disconnecting and reconnecting over and over, that's normally cause it's connected to an incompatible USB controller. Try different USB ports, and make sure your power supply is big enough
@@DaleyTech PSU is the same as u said in the video, 12V output with 3000MAH. I will try it thank you.
Would 12v 1.0A work or would a DC 11v 1A work. And also what way do you wire it up if there is no coloured wires inside do it from Which ones positive or negative because I just have two black wires with strips of copper inside them
look at the rubber on the wires closely, one will have ridges or a thin white line, those are positive type and plain smooth wire is negative.
doing this can you still use the original cord and just leave the power cord you soldered unplugged to connect to the xbox?
As long as you can still get the original to still fit in there, it should work.
your right it works. but my kinect repeats on and off like its booting up then has a problem and shuts off
I Can confirm this works, I used an old 12v 1.5A DC power supply. Windows recognised it straight away! Thanks for the video, saved me a bomb for the official adapter
I also used the 1.5a power supply. I’m concerned that it’s not going to be enough in the long run.....
I wonder why people are saying you need a 2.5a or above?
I have just one question ! Thanks for with hack but i think ths Fan dont works !!! Do toi have this problem ? Thanks regards
Is not easier to modify the cable?
How did they manage the screw up Windows 7 support?
good morning friends
can you please tell me which is the best configuration to buy a laptop to work with kinect v2?
Thank you !
Boa tarde!
meu PC é um Ryzen 9 5900X, MSI MPG X570 Gaming Plus, GigaByte RTX3080ti 12Gb EAGLE....
What solder gun did you use?
Do you know of any way to do this with the xbox 360 kinect?
Can i use laptop power supply as the power adapter, because i dont want it to be over voltage or anything harm to the kinect.
19.5V - 4.62A
That will ruin your kinect. You really need to use a 12V power adapter.
I do have 12V power adapter, but i dont have color wire like in the video, it just 2 black wire which can be split into 2 part. All i know is, it is positive polarity symbol. Can i use this ? I can connect it just like in the video ?
Wont work for me. My white wire would be ground and red would go to pin 10 right?
Will this adapted version now work with Xbox One X or Xbox One S?
yes
Cheers for the video - adapted mine and now working with my xbox one x =)
