That Sumo Trial was rigged to oblivion. Dead Metal was waaay too overpowered for the bots and you can tell they were deciding who goes through by the fact that he kept hanging on to the bots for a few seconds before letting them go.
The Trials and Gauntlet were very easy to rig for certain robots and I've no doubt that it's what happened a lot in these early two series. I never liked these as a method of eliminating competitors which is why I'm so glad that series 3 onwards just had the arena to eliminate people.
Yeah, not many great ones here. Vercingetorix was decent until it broke down, and Haardvark was surprisingly good, but the others were kind of terrible.
Ah, Heat L. Fun Fact, this was the first episode I watched all the way through when it aired on a Sunday Morning. I had to go to church at that time and we had this episode recorded on tape. I've been doing it right up to the end of the Classic Era. Although my Sister's ex-friend had to film Series 7 as we didn't have good reception on Channel 5.
This seems like a very poor heat. I mean, look at Roadblocks heat, that featured Killerhurtz, Onslaught and Nemesis whilst this heat contained no good machines. Even Hardvark isn’t that good.
There was a kid in the same class as me at school whose parents were able to out-bid mine for tickets to go see Series Two 22 years ago and I keep on seeing him in the audience!

There weren't many good robots in this heat. Vercingetorix seemed like a decent robot until it broke down in the fight, Haardvark didn't look like much but it was decently good in the fights. The others were not much, really. Sumo definitely looked rigged, more so than any of the other trials or gauntlets so far. Dead Metal could definitely have ended some of those matches far quicker but decided to keep hold of them and saw them for a few seconds when really it should have just pushed and let go.
It is certainly fun to watch these early episodes before you watch the later ones to see just how much the robots evolved during the run of this show.
0:36 oof that's even more relevant than it was back then

Yeesh, this heat really was battle of the trashcans.

I don't think Dead Metal should have wasted time by sawing the back side of Vercingetorix.
