Thank you, thank you thank you. A hundred times thank you for the straightforward easy to understand video. Short story long. Im not handy but I have a lot of time and patience. I just retired. So the bike would crank and not start. I had fuel going to the carb but none coming out the bowl drain? So I followed Tatts for Life video how to remove the carb. I did it and cleaned it and put it back together. Eventually it did start after I the dope realized I reversed a fuel and vacuum line. After I fixed it all and put it back together, it wouldnt start. Anyways I was clueless till you helped me. The right side spark plug had no spark. But the left side did. After poking around I found a broken wire on that side of the ignition coil. And now I got spark. Now hopefully putting it back together I wont break any wires or damage any fuel lines and get this puppy running. Thanks Matt. Subscribed.
When I'm dealing with a non-running engine, compression is usually the last thing I check unless the sound of how it cranks suggests I check that first. If you have an ear for how a certain engine should sound while cranking, you can usually tell by how it sounds while cranking if compression is an issue. The first thing I usually check for is spark. It's a quick and easy test, if that checks out, then the fuel/air is my next step. With most I've dealt with, most of the time it's a fuel delivery issue or incorrect fuel/air mixture setting. Lack of spark was usually the next most common problem.
Agreed. Usually it’s just gummed up carbs, or tank(if it’s real nasty). Plus old plugs/dead battery. But even a dead(low charge) battery with a running bump start might be enough to kick it over to idle.
Okay, I wasn't actually expecting to get much from this video but it gave me everything I wanted to know very quickly and precisely. Thanks Allstate lol
Here's a tip, take the plug cap off and leave 1/4" or so away from the terminal of the plug. Make the spark jump across. If that starts the bike, and it often will, that tells you the plugs need replacing. I've used this trick lots of times.
This reiterated what I thought is my non running issue. 1.made sure the engine cranked over decently with the carbs off and plugs out. 2.Put new spark plugs(properly gapped) in. 3. Cleaned carbs and reinstalled. 4. Shot some started fluid down each carb opening and it fired up for a few seconds then died. I’m sure once I add the tank full of gas, with a clear gas line, it’ll stay running and after a bit of fine tuning, hum right along. Thanks for the video!
the first check i do when my engine doesn't run, is, "is there any petrol in the fuel tank check?". Without adequate fuel an engine simply will not run. The 2nd check is, "is the kill switch engaged check?" The 3rd is, "Is my battery got enough charge check?"...etc etc
yeh id have put "is my fuel tap switched to on", " has my battery enough juice to not only work the lights, but also crank the engine". way above these 3 checks
The last part is what I need help with, but I want to know what to do myself. I had this issue before and resolve it, but don't remember the exact steps. The only thing I remember is removing the tank and disposing the old fuel (because water got into the tank from days of rain), and sprayed fuel treatment/water remover into the tank. I changed the spark plugs, and I found a bent line (So I assumed this was the issue) Once I straightened it, it appeared to operate again (But idk if this was the true cause) Now after my poor bike got hit by rainy weather a couple months ago we're back to this problem again. It can't be wet components because it had more than enough time to dry, I repeated everything, but no luck this time.
Hi Mathew great clear video. Please help if you can. My 1981 BMR80GS is clacking like a machine gun on pushing start button and won't start. I have it on trickle charge to keep the battery charged. But it seems flat (horn not sounding) I'm hoping the engine hasn't seized. Haven't done any of the 3 checks yet. Thank you.
Hey boss...I have a 1996 Yamaha Royal star 1300...it takes a while for it to start in the morning...once it starts it will fire up perfect the rest of the day...I just did the spark plugs n it got better but still take at least 5 to 6 tries before it fires up
How to change the spark plugs on a 650 Husqvarna terra, strada, it has the red plastic covers on top of the plug wires, do you just pull them off with ur hand, then change the plugs ?
When attempting to start the engine sounds like the starter is grinding or the bendix is not engaging but will intermittently. Think a simple rebuild kit or complete starter?
I have a issue on my gsxr k1 2002, she turns the starter but dont run, i put a starter spray like u did and it starts. I already Tested injectors, and a NEW gasolin filter, any way she dont want go without spray! I need help here.
The motorcycle shut down on me now the ignition button won't crank the bike. The headlight works fine still look like a couple of the other lights don't want to work.
Looking for a little help, ok here’s the deal. Recently purchased a motorcycle that was sitting for years. And it don’t seem to spark on all cylinders like it should, unless I have jumper cables hooked to it from a running car.... battery is fine! Tried 3 battery’s two was new..... I can start the bike by jumping it off a vehicle. And I’m able to remove the jumper cables after it starts and it will still run. However I’ve not let it run for more than a minute.... next thing I noticed is someone has put a voltage meter on the bike and it always stays one mark below the green light unless jumper cables are hooked to it..... if the green light on the meter lights up green I get perfect spark! But however if not only front cylinder gets spark... I’ve also noticed when I hit the brake handle with ignition turned over the voltage meter practically drops to nothing! Now if I have jumper cables on like I mentioned the light on the voltage meter is green until I hit the brake handle then it drops a mark below green and won’t start.... sorry for all the confusion needed to pick at someone’s brain other mine... what could the problem be? P.s. the old owner said he was driving it down the road one day and it just started to cut out. Pulled it home and that’s where it sat for years
Just so everyone is aware this is just to find out what subsystem you should be looking at. Take this troubleshooting to figure out where the problem lies then move onto your owners manual. Even google "motorbike ignition problems" or "motorbike fuel delivery problems" once you have figured out where the issue lies.
Hi mate. Are these all checks that you would still do on a bike that runs perfectly all day, then sometimes, just cranks and cranks with no actual sign of starting (no sound of chugging from engine/or anything being ignited)? Then 10 mins later... Starts fine? If they pass these tests - can you rule out that issue ENTIRELY? 2) We tested spark on 1&4 (easy access), was OK. but maybe this was a time when it was 'deciding to be working' ... 3) also it started/ignited with carb cleaner. Me and my mate getting very stressed. I keep getting stranded and can't figure out why. I've noticed rust on one block (which comes out of the inside of a coil pack) and screw. There's two packs, two cables each, one cable to each spark plug. This screw screws the pack into a mounting bracket which goes over the frame. Could this be symptoms of a bad earth? Would coil packs need grounding from the frame? Bike is 2000 honda hornet cb600, also known for bad regulator/rectifier
i have found your videos use full. but i have yet another issue i was hoping to help on. i have a 1987 honda goldwing that had a short in the taillight. now the bike will not start, i have replaced the starter solenoid and have the starter on the way. all though battery is fully charged the dash instruments will fade when key is turned on.
i need help with the 1988 gs 450. i have a spark on both sides but on my left side sparks is missing sometimes. if i move the wire away an inch way from the plug the spark is fixed only on higher rpm s. have changed my plugs now what is left is the pulsar, cdi and ignition,. any thoughts?
Hey bro after the rain my boulevard run for like 10 minutes and die .. I though I have no gas but I have half ... the bike start now but sound diferent and when I revv just stop ., like no gas again and Again
Interesting Allstate is doing this sort of video. But, I think professional help is the wisest thing. Interesting video, though. I learned something. :)
My 2015 yamaha mt 125 was sitting for a year and today i charged the battery. Starter was spinning compression was good and fuel pump was humming. But it wasnt starting. If i pushed it down a hull and put it in 2nd it starte for a moment and then died. Was is the problem???
Hey. My motorcyle have low compresion. It has 25psi. It should have 100-90psi. It wont start. Makes no unnormal noise. Should i change my piston and cylinder? I think the sim rings have got a punch. Checked the other to points you said. Please help!!
Quick question. My battery completely died on my 2009 street glide. I now replaced it with a new one and now it won't start. It's cranking great and trying to turn on but doesn't happen. Any advice on what it might be?
HI, If I am away from my place for over a year and my bike will be idle for that long, how do u suggest that I should keep my bike, so that it will not be harmful. Shall I disconnect the battery or their is something else I need to consider since the bike will be idle for almost a year??
Hey i got kawasaki zzr600 2007 big problem whern weather is cold it wont start at all checked air filter fuel filter sparks plug but when sun warns the bike works any idea?????
it may be that your valve shims are worn my mate had one and it had the same problem starting when warm and not when cold you may need to check your bike valve clearances
This is what my situation was when I had your specific issue. "Leaking valve" which causes poor compression when cold. On my goldwing, it was the exhaust valve on the number 1 cylinder. A tooth brush and Sea Foam cleaned the fouling on the valve and put a stop to the no start when cold issue. Yours could be an intake valve. I lucked out to have it be an exhaust valve. FIRST, check your plugs and air filter. It is known that old plugs or a somewhat plugged air filter can cause a cold no start condition.
Bro I had the same problem on a gs 500 ... Hate to break it to you but it's either your valve clearance is out of spec' or your rings are gone... Or you need to replace your battery....
can a battery go dead if you dont use the bike? i got a new bike and rode it for a couple of times and then did not use it for like couple of weeks and now the bike wont start
Hey I’m having trouble with my bike and I can’t figure out what it is I have an 05 CBR600 I put a new battery in my bike and it try’s to start its clicking but the back light are on but the front light won’t turn on so I’m not sure if it’s a lose wire which is causing the front light to not turn on as well as the bike
Usually the motor has acted difficult but with a few tries it would eventually start. Yesterday I was riding in wet conditions, which I have before. But this morning after attempting to start, NOTHING. No sound or engine attempting to start at all. The battery is still operating given the dash lighting and head-light still comes on. But after pressing the ignition, NOTHING happens. Everything appears to be connected. Any suggestions?
is the compression a common problem? going to see a cbr600rr and the guy said he changed the rectifier and stator, he thinks its spark plugs. I can't check them then and there though obviously.

I have a yamaha ttr90. fresh top end. oversize piston and bore. carb rebuild / bigger pilot jet.. rode it for a few days and one day i killed it. pressed start button and before it fired it back fired and shot a small flame. next day I was riding in my yard kinda slow but doing wheelies and it was warmer out and I lost all power and it died. wouldn't start up.. any help?
USUALLY a backfire through carb means the engine is searching for fuel. Check fuel delivery from tank to carb. If you have that, popssibly no spark. Ck. fuses, kill switch, spark plug and coil.
Moy motorcycle refuse to start when it park under direct sunlight more than half an hour. I need to Crank up 3 to 4 time. What is the problem? It only happens when the bike is under sunlight
my cbr 954 starts normally when cold. when hot it doesn't start it just turns and turns and only starts if i let it cool or push start it! would really appreciate your help!
Check your fuel, if fuel is OK, check for a spark. Compression is probably the last thing to worry about If you bike was running, then the compression will be OK.
Um.......what about checking for a dead battery or dirty terminals perhaps? JUST had that issue with my bike. Not enough battery power to crank it over. Epic mistake missing that step in your video. Very first thing you'd check!
I have a 2014 ninjal 300 ABS it won’t stay on it turns on for a few seconds and if I give it some throttle it completely dies out already put new battery, new filter and cleaned the cab nothing what you think it could be any one
I have a old 2004 yz85 that i just mess around with i just got a brand new top and end pretty much had the whole bike rebuilt. It started at the shop fine and then when i got home it will not start.:/ it only turns over while im bump starting and as soon as i stop it totally shuts of.. any ideas please..
I have a 2000 Yamaha v star 650 classic is having trouble starting I give it gas like for 6 times and sometimes it starts and sometimes it doesn't any idea.
Is it carburated? Sounds like the float bowls in your carb aren't closing all the way. This will allow gas to go into your cylinders. This can leak into your engine oil. And this can cause you to flood your engine.
What about gap timing?? You can still have spark, compression, everything could be perfect, BUT if the plugs aren’t firing at the correct time then that bike isn’t going anywhere.
Why a lot of viewers give bad feedback to the youtube channel owners, specially this kind of thing who give a very clear assistance. What the heck are you people?! Instead of saying thank you?! Goodddd.. Very much bitter! So annoyed!
2011 Kawasaki Ninja 400r rode for two seasons, bike fell over in driveway, smashed upper front fairing and right mirror. Bike still ran, then stored for 4 years. Bike cranks but will not start now.....any suggestions??
I mean, ok but there are other troubleshoot before starting with the compression... If my computer doesn't start i don't begin disassembling the processor...
I just Bought a used Bike [2011 Duke 200] and I get about 18km per litre.... When I asked my friends they said I'm supposed to get upto 30 And the showroom recommends I should get 38 so can u tell me what all I should do to get back my mileage?? Like new Iridium Spark plugs and all???
Hi could you help me at all? I have a Husqvarna smr 450 it wouldn’t start just clicked so I brought a new starter motor still clicked, changed battery same.. iv just fitted a brand new solenoid and it’s still clicking from selnoid I have to bump the bike to get to work and it takes ages aha plz help? It has no clutch switch so you don’t have to pull clutch in to start it.. um that’s it I’m stucck
Make sure you're getting a good connection on the battery terminal and check the ground to frame. If still clicking then its probably your starter switch
my kickstand down. on neutral. light on full battery. but i dont hear any clicking when i hold the start button. do anyone kno what else im doing wrong?

Why does everybody tell me to seek professional help?!?
🤣🤣🤣
Likely they are in the Motorcycle repair business and are trying to get more business?
First thing you check is compression? Crazyness. How about fuel/spark first.
left the battery in the bike all through the winter. bike doesn't start ! ??? oh well better check compression.

This is perfect, would you start with marvel mystery oil first to guard against hydro lock for a bike that has been sitting too long?
Thanks Matt I needed reminding where to spray starter fluid!
lmao im stuck at school while my driver's motor wont start 😭😂
I rolled my eyes when he said to have a direct extinguisher on standby. My bike cought on fire

Compression I measured is perfect. Now going for spark plug and new battery. But before any of that. Ill just have a look at valve clearances.
I’ve a brand new motorbike and it has trouble? Could it be carburetor that needs adjustment ? Also it comes with a Chinese spark plug

Check your fuel, if fuel is OK, check for a spark. Compression is probably the last thing to worry about If you bike was running, then the compression will be OK.
I have an old engine it has spark fuel and compression but it just dosent start any idea?
Um.......what about checking for a dead battery or dirty terminals perhaps? JUST had that issue with my bike. Not enough battery power to crank it over. Epic mistake missing that step in your video. Very first thing you'd check!
I have a 2014 ninjal 300 ABS it won’t stay on it turns on for a few seconds and if I give it some throttle it completely dies out already put new battery, new filter and cleaned the cab nothing what you think it could be any one
One of the first things I do when my Victory does not start is check the compression in my engine?
lol way over board....so many other things to check first...
Thanks so much
Thank you

I have a old 2004 yz85 that i just mess around with i just got a brand new top and end pretty much had the whole bike rebuilt. It started at the shop fine and then when i got home it will not start.:/ it only turns over while im bump starting and as soon as i stop it totally shuts of.. any ideas please..
sounds like a fuel problem.. check that fuel runs from tank through fuel line.
Isn't that fuel petcock in the "OFF" position? That would certainly add to your starting woes.
Matt great video bro
Out of sequence .. spark, gas first ,, how many times does an engine fail to run because of compression ?
7 times
I have a 2000 Yamaha v star 650 classic is having trouble starting I give it gas like for 6 times and sometimes it starts and sometimes it doesn't any idea.
Carbs are probably sticking.
What would cause gas in my oil. An would it keep my bike from starting. Kawasaki vn800 2005.thanx
My motorcycle eventually starts but if I rev it up it turns off. Any ideas?
what you mean by high engine?
What if there is no spark with a new spark plug? any advice is appreciated :)
Try your replacing the spark plug cable.
breaker points not open/closing, or wire to points maybe grounding out?
cable and CDI and spark plug
Why a lot of viewers give bad feedback to the youtube channel owners, specially this kind of thing who give a very clear assistance. What the heck are you people?! Instead of saying thank you?! Goodddd.. Very much bitter! So annoyed!
What if it holds no compress at all?
Very helpful
Do you know why the motorcycle is stuck in the same speed even when accelerated? After 10 seconds it hit the speed again
What if no start even with starter fluid? Thanks
Thank you so much, you solved the problem I was having
Thanks boss
Ive shocked myself doing the spark testing... not a nice feeling😂
Some of my buds did not warn me when doing this...
2011 Kawasaki Ninja 400r rode for two seasons, bike fell over in driveway, smashed upper front fairing and right mirror. Bike still ran, then stored for 4 years. Bike cranks but will not start now.....any suggestions??
carbs are gunked up with old gas. need to be removed, cleaned and re synched..
I mean, ok but there are other troubleshoot before starting with the compression... If my computer doesn't start i don't begin disassembling the processor...
Usually checking for gas, the gas shutoff is turned to on position. Then move on to other probable causes.
I just Bought a used Bike [2011 Duke 200] and I get about 18km per litre.... When I asked my friends they said I'm supposed to get upto 30

It has no clutch switch so you don’t have to pull clutch in to start it.. um that’s it I’m stucck
Make sure you're getting a good connection on the battery terminal and check the ground to frame. If still clicking then its probably your starter switch

The startor motor or the starter solenoid may be faulty you can bypass it with a screwdriver to be 100%. You should subscribe to my channel
